This will be Mitt’s night.  The night starts off with his youngest son addressing the convention in Spanish.  I expect that will piss off much of the faithful.

73 Thoughts to “Thursday night at the GOP Convention: Mitt’s Night”

  1. Jeb Bush is now up, He also is speaking in Spanish…well sort of. Just a little. He speaks on behalf of the Bushes. He was strange acting about George. He kept us safe. Go figure.

  2. Lyssa

Pretty sure Clint Eastwood will address the crowd in English……Rollin’ Rollin’ Rollin’…….

  3. Please tell me that isn’t true…please!!!

  4. Lyssa

    Heard it on WTOP

    1. Yup, its true, according to pokie’s favorite station.

      1. No, and I dont think his favorite station is msnbc, which is where I heard it.

  5. Lyssa

    I’m not pokie

  6. Rubio gave a decent speech. He is very articulate and looks about 18. How old is he?

Now Romney is up. Will he hit it out of the ball park?

I actually like the Romneys, its the republican party I have nothing in common with. It violates my value system. I do like Old Mitt, before he went over to the dark side.

  7. Romney just old out. The Republicans let things turn to crap before the crash. Now they are whining that someone else didn’t come along and fix it. Of all the nerve.

Sorry, they were whining that Obama hadn’t fixed it before he was even inaugurated.

  8. marinm

My boy sat and watched Rubio silently but intently. It was adorable.

Mitt came on and he fell asleep. That boy is smarter than most adults.

    None of the Above ’12!

  9. Mitt said something about Obama raising taxes on the middle class. That is a lie.

  10. marinm

    http://money.cnn.com/2012/01/30/news/economy/Obama_tax_record/index.htm

“Obama, however, also signed into law measures that would raise the tax burden for some in the middle class.”

IIRC the wage base was also increased to 110K? Yes? Also the FSA change hit me.

So, yup. The middle class took a hit.

  11. I still am thinking about Clint Eastwood. How totally bizarre. Was he sober?

  12. Ryan/Rubio 2020 or Rubio/whoever 2020

Eastwood was funny. And said MANY true things. Probably wanted to finally say something nationally before he dies.

Romney did a good speech. An expected speech, but a good one. B+ with a A towards the end.

    1. B+ that moved to a D.

Why do you say Clint Eastwood is dying? He looked healthy enough to me. He just sounded a little drunk.

  13. He’s 82. By the next election….he might not make it. I was just thinking that he was taking this moment to have fun on a national stage, even if the “speech” was more for the entertainment of the convention and not the cameras. Everyone in the room got the jokes.

Of course, after I said that….he’s probably going to live to be 102.

  14. Does anyone else think that MIchael Steele was treated shabbily?

He didn’t even get invited to the convention. Persona non grata.

How much money did he raise while RNC chair? How many seats in the house? How many governors?

    Very shabby treatment.

    Got that right.

Sounded a little drunk? Have you ever even HEARD Joe Biden give a speech?

    1. His speech made a lot more sense once the chair is shown. I missed it the first couple of times.

  17. SlowpokeRodriguez

    Moon-howler :

That is far from a lie. In fact, he signed in laws that are the largest middle-class tax hikes in history.

    1. Its a lie. MY taxes haven’t gone up. I am middle class. Shame on Romney for lying.

  18. Pat Herve

In fact, he signed in laws that are the largest middle-class tax hikes in history. – that is just pure Palin and Limbaugh sound bite, and untrue. Not a fact. If you want to repeat it, you should back it up.

  19. Starryflights

Romney sure is setting some high expectations, that’s for sure.

  20. Bull crap @cargo. Not really.

That is such a stretch. Then if the a national park increases its entrance fees, its a tax hike. such bull crap.

Totally agree with there. It was shameful. Michael Steele has worked, worked, worked for the Republicans. He would have been a great “show piece” for the black Republicans IMHO.

Let’s just take a moment to remember how far we have come since 2008. Anti amnesia video is sometimes necessary to remind people what this country was facing when Obama took over. Maybe these anti government repubicans should take over. Let our economy fall. I am getting to the point where I am tired of fighting. TARP passed because of Democrats.

  23. Elena

Slow, what the hell are you talking about? Our taxes have remained the same, along with everyone else, including Mitt, who apparently pays a THIRD of what we poor schmucks pay every year!

  24. @Moon-howler
Tell that to the Supreme Court. The Administration even argued that it IS a tax. Therefore…tax hike.

    I will be taxed more.

    1. People who have health insurance will not have to pay anything. Actually, I would look at it like a fine rather than a tax. You will have to do what I have been doing for years. I don’t consider buying health care a tax.

  25. @Elena
Really, you pay millions in taxes?

    Wow.

Because Mitt paid millions in taxes and charity.

    Rates DO NOT equal amounts.

But, hey, lets get to that flat tax, then you can pay at the same rate as Mitt. 15% across the board on all money above 2x the poverty level.

  26. Pat.Herve

hard to argue that most people are not better off than 4 years ago –

    Stocks – http://finance.yahoo.com/q/bc?t=5y&s=^DJI&l=on&z=l&q=l&c=&ql=1&c=^GSPC&c=^DJI

    job growth – http://www.barackobama.com/news/entry/23-months-of-job-growth/

small businesses are now able to get credit and loans – they were dried up in 2008/2009 – talk about a constraint on small businesses. Should things be better, Yes, they should be, but there was so much leverage and excess that had to be absorbed, that it takes a while for things to unwind. Yet, some want more deregulation on the Financial Sector, even though they were giving out loans to those that could not afford to pay, and turning many of those loans over to Freddie and Fannie. If the R’s and the D’s could get on a plan to reduce spending, fix taxes, fix entitlements – we could be doing much better, but that would take compromise. Just wait, the fiscal cliff is coming, and Congress has done nothing about it – talk about uncertainty in the markets and business – there is nothing more uncertain than the fiscal cliff – which is hindering my business from making investments right now.

  27. ” If the R’s and the D’s could get on a plan to reduce spending, fix taxes, fix entitlements – we could be doing much better, but that would take compromise. A-FRICKIN-MEN!

So, first we need courageous people in office that actually WANT to reduce the spending. Second, we need people in office that will prioritize and work out a plan. Third, we need the citizenry to realize that there’s no such thing as a free lunch and let these people work.

That means that we have to get rid of ….probably…..85-90% of Congress….. no biggie.

  28. Starryflights

Clint was typical of the average republican voter – an old white man arguing incoherently to an imaginary Obama.

    1. bwaaaahahahahahahahaaha! Good one, Starry.

I am an old white woman tired of listening to old white men! (not quite as old as Clint though.)

  29. @Starryflights
I think that the actor portraying Obama in that skit was dead on…especially in the content of his answers.

  30. Elena

Amen Pat! We are better off then we were four years ago and Obama should start effing reminding people of that. He isn’t a miracle worker and never claimed to have a magic bullet. What was it the republicans wanted to do, or right, cut spending and lower taxes, sounds like a great plan. How does that create jobs again in the middle of a horrible recession. How again would this have helped in 2008?

If R’s had won, there would have been no stimulus,no auto bail out, no health care over all, still spending billions in Iraq. Yeah, sound great. Hey, maybe they will get a chance now and Mitt, along with Rove and the other neo cons that are backing him, can get us into a brand new war with Iran. Nothin’ like military welfare to keep an economy plugging along!

  31. I am beginning to think that perhaps a public apology needs to be made to President Obama. The more I find out about that bizarre performance, the more disrespectful it seems.

I didn’t get it at first.

I am sure the Romneys are upset. Someone really didn’t do their homework. Whoever let Eastwood out there should be fired and should have to deliver the apology, then Romney should do it, not because he is at fault but because it was his convention.

  32. Elena

You know what I think if Romney wins? I say the Dems should go into hybernation, let the repubs vote AND pass all their crazy ideas.

They want to accuse Dems of being socialist anti americans, have at it. It’s all yours guys, government rule with no backlash.

  33. @Elena

I agree. We are a whole lot better off than we were 4 years ago.

My house isn’t worth as much but it was overly priced. I have almost made up all my investment loses. Had it not been for the teaparty deniers [oh it wasn’t US!] dragging us to the point of default at the end of last July and consequently the market tanked big time, I would have caught up. I almost had to go back to go and start over.

  34. @Cargosquid

What are you calling an entitlement and how do you want to “fix” it?

  35. slowpokerodriguez

Let me praise and endorse the left’s villification of Clint Eastwood. That’s a winning strategy! Please don’t let up!

  36. SlowpokeRodriguez

    Moon-howler :

Problem is, we’re still waiting for Obama’s public apology to the American people for the countless lawsuits, the failure to enforce laws, the economic situation, the economic disaster that is ObamaCare, etc, etc.

  37. @slowpoke, bite me

Once again, you are incapable of discussion. No one has vilified Clint Eastwood. His behavior, like yours now, was inappropriate in that particular setting. More importantly, his “performance” should have been vetted.

I don’t think he did Mitt Romney any favors.

  38. SlowpokeRodriguez

    Moon-howler :

I agree. We are a whole lot better off than we were 4 years ago.
My house isn’t worth as much but it was overly priced. .

Yeah, I think most people will say “I didn’t need all that house value”. Thank You, Obama, for all the negative equity!

    1. I don’t need that house value if I have to pay taxes on it. Inflation is never good, even in houses.

Most people accepted that their houses were overly valued in 2006-2007. The bottom fell out long before Obama was inaugurated.

Your hatred of the man is clouding your facts.

  39. Slowpoke, I am not going to change. Perhaps you are wasting your time.

    Second sentence…….want a list?

Slowpoke, I am not going to change. Perhaps you are wasting your time.

    Don’t want you to change!

  42. SlowpokeRodriguez

    Moon-howler :
Slowpoke, I am not going to change. Perhaps you are wasting your time.

Hell, I wouldn’t expect ANYONE to change based on anything that happens on this blog. Anyone looking to change anyone else is a bit foolish, methinks!

  43. @Moon-howler
I didn’t call anything an entitlement.

    But…how to fix it?

Do I have to repeat this again? We’ve gone through this ad nauseum.

    Well…ok.

In general, Congress needs to restrict spending to no more than 20% of GDP. Traditionally, we spend 16-18%. Congress needs to prioritize.

Specifically, we need to reform our agencies. Combine redundant programs. Get rid of entire departments like Education, Energy, etc. A general 10% cut in REAL spending across the board is necessary.

The goal to reducing entitlements like Medicaid is raising the income level of poor people. Do the things that get them into higher incomes or into jobs at all…with med insurance.

Deregulate certain agencies….streamline our laws. ACR is a travesty at 1000+ pages. Repeal it. Reform the EPA. Either reform or get rid of Fannie/Freddie if they are going to continue to go bankrupt. Reform the Post Office. Either privatize it or bring it completely into the gov’t. It is a constitutional duty after all. Medicare needs reform. So far, only Ryan has the guts to put forth an actual plan. It may be wrong…but its the only one.

Social Security needs to be reformed. A) put all SS taxes into a separate fund, away from the general fund to prevent raids. B) to do this, make all SS money into bonds. C) put an option to privatize. Of course, to do this we need to amend the Constitution. SS was passed a a general tax.

Stop the bailouts. Reform the tax credits. In fact, streamline the entire tax code. Sunset the current one. Flat tax if we MUST have an income tax.

If we can’t cut…Freeze spending. No increases. Grow the economy and that will increase the tax base. Eventually, the budget will balance.

    1. I will try again, Cargo:

      @Cargosquid #comment-163503

What are you calling an entitlement and how do you want to “fix” it?

Either we call Medicare and Social Security entitlements or we call medicaid an entitlement. If we are talking about govt. programs people are entitled to because they have paid in, then lets chose SS and mediCARE to be the entitlements.

I think that is what the ACA is all about…re medicaid. Let’s put that aside for a minute. (the reason for the volumes is because each state has its own medicaid program)

Let’s talk about reform but lets actually give examples of reforms. I would cut out husband shopping for social security, block out any funds being used for anything but old age, iad to dependent children meaning those with dead parents, and the disabled. I would also raise the ceiling up to a hell of a lot but take it off of an increasing %. I would take the old rate and rather than increase it by 11% or whatever it is, I would flat rate it something that didnt hurt businesses.

Medicare: not sure what I would do. Too many can’t afford what they have now. I might consider making some of the premium income tested. That would help some. I might also allow people to postpone going in at 65. Right now there is penalty.

PS If you would prefer me to ignore you rather than engage you in conversation, that is an easy fix. I feel you were rude to me.

  44. So that’s my idea.

Where’s anyone else’s? I seem to be the only one that presents one.

    1. @Cargo

You most certainly did bring up entitlements and I questioned what you were calling entitlements.

  45. Emma

The Hollywood stars and starlets, who will arrive at the DNC via private jets and accompanied by their entourages, will be full of ideas about how the rest of us should live!

    @Cargosquid

  46. @Emma
Aren’t they coming by electric car? Or Skype?

  47. Censored bybvbl

    @Emma

How did the multi-millionaires and billionaires who contributed to Republican PACs arrive while telling all the peons about how the tax cuts benefit them, the poor middle class worker-bees, while laughing all the way to their off-shore banks?

  48. Censored bybvbl

    @Moon-howler

I agree – I’d rather have lower taxes based on a lower (realistic) house value. When the median family income won’t allow someone to buy the median family house, something’s askew. Only Naive Nellies would assume that the price of a house will continue to escalate as incomes stagnate. The writing was on the wall.

    1. Most people couldn’t afford to buy here. REalistically. Then people groused when 20 people pooled their money and moved in next door. It was a bad situation in my opinion.
