Eat your heart out Silver Lake, there’s a new jewel in town (and it ain’t you)

Prince William County has been ranked #8 in the nation in  job growth.  It falls behind Loudoun County which is ranked #1 and mostly Texas communities.  It supposedly has a job growth of 48.6%.  My question is, where are the jobs and do  those jobs support a livable wage in this county?

From CNN.com

Prince William County takes the crown when it comes to offering enticing perks to businesses. Expedited permits for companies in “targeted” industries that promise high-paying jobs and capital investment is just one of the ways it rolls out the red carpet.

Also behind the job boom: proximity to the D.C. Beltway, a smart workforce and competitive tax rates. Some 770 new jobs were announced last year, a nearly 14% increase from the previous year.

The jewel of Prince William County is Innovation Technology Park, a 1,600-acre corporate district whose tenants include the FBI, Comcast and George Mason University’s Life Sciences Campus. One of the newest additions is Vector Security, which last year announced it was moving into the park and bringing 130 new jobs with it.

So who is the real intended victim in the Chick-Fil-A shooting incident?

Fox News should probably be careful about this kind of domestic terrorism also.  They are right there on 6th Avenue in what appears to be a very open studio.  Compare their “reporting” of this incident  to the Washington Post account.

Family Research Council might not have been the only intended victim of last week’s Chick-Fil-A shooting.  The alleged  lone gunman, Floyd Lee Corkins Jr., only had a note in his pocket with the address on it.  That address is shared with Traditional Values Coalition.  According to the Washington Post:

Federal authorities have charged Corkins, 28, of Herndon, with assault with intent to kill while armed and interstate transportation of weapons.

A magistrate ordered him held Thursday for psychiatric evaluation and scheduled a detention hearing for this month. His attorney did not respond to interview requests Friday.

Documents filed by prosecutors in the District’s federal court say Corkins walked into the lobby of the Family Research Council, told security guard Leonardo R. Johnson, “I don’t like your politics,” and shot him in the arm during a scuffle. Police said Johnson subdued Corkins.

Court papers say Corkins was armed with a 9mm Sig Sauer handgun and had two magazines of ammunition and an additional 50 rounds in his backpack. Authorities also said he carried 15 sandwiches from Chick-fil-A.

Devo–Don’t Roof-Rack Me Bro (Unleashing Seamus)

Seamus has his own website also at www.rememberseamus.com

A board came comes out later this month called Crate Escape.  There will be an app for iphone.

Get your Seamus news here.

Devo says their efforts aren’t pro-Obama but instead, are pro-animal.

I withhold judgement.  I have known too many dogs who loved to GO and would hope into a kennel on the back of pick up truck.  They were happier than all hell.  It sounds like a roof dog carrier might have just been up a few feet higher.  As long as the crate was secure and the door opened towards the back, Seamus might have been a happy camper–a very happy camper.  Maybe people just haven’t known enough country dogs.

The animal situations that upset me are the ones with dogs in a pickup that aren’t secured.  If you are out on the road, the dog needs to be kenneled.

The Romneys need to do themselves a favor and release a picture of Seamus in his kennel.  That would  set things straight.  Excuse me now…I have grossed myself out.  I had a border collie with a similar problem in the back of a station wagon.  Even though it happened 30 years ago, we are all still scarred for life.  Dog,  ham fat (stupid brother-in-law).  very sick.  trip from Baltimore.  Many stops.

Hannity bullies another guest

This just isn’t any way to talk to a guest.  Hannity is a bully.  Very few presidents have been vilified as Obama has been.  Clinton and Bush II may be be running a real close second.

I thought I believed in having an ID to vote.  Notice the past tense.  After seeing what was done to Prince William County to carve up districts to produce a willing ticket, I now question if the voter ID situation wasn’t motivated by similar attempts to alter outcome rather than the intended stated reason.

Mt. St. Helens blew her top in 1980

Nothing humbles you like the still-present devastation at Mt. St. Helens.  Giant trees are embedded in the hill sides as though they were match sticks.

Nothing contrasts life and death like Mt. St. Helens.  Despite the devastation, all around you there is life, from the elk herds grazing far below Johnston Ridge Observatory to the wild flowers, newly formed lakes and squirrels that beg for snacks.

Mt. St. Helens is very much a live volcano.  She continues to belch smoke, steam and all sorts of stinky sulfphuric smells from far below the earth.  Will the lady throw another tantrum?  Only time will tell.  Get out of the way if she does!

Speaking of natural disasters, we seem to have avoided hurricanes this summer.  Am I bringing on bad Karma by mentioning it?

The Otherization of Obama–Slowpoke’s link

UPDATE:  This afternoon Toure apologized to the audience for his use of the N-word yesterday and said that he should have done it differently.

From MSNBC:
On Thursday’s edition of MSNBC’s The Cycle the group discussed Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney‘s assertion that President Obama should “take [his] campaign of division and anger and hate back to Chicago.” Co-host Touré saw what he believes to be explicit racial connotations beneath what Romney was saying, calling it the “niggerization” of the campaign.

“That really bothered me,” he said. “You notice he said anger twice. He’s really trying to use racial coding and access some really deep stereotypes about the angry black man. This is part of the playbook against Obama, the ‘otherization,’ he’s not like us.”

DREAMers get temporary reprieve–deportation deferred for 2 years

Children of illegal immigrants who meet certain conditions are now able to apply for deferred action which, while not permanent, gives 2 years of reprieve from deportation .

According to the Washington Post:

The Obama administration kicked off one of the most sweeping changes in immigration policy in decades Wednesday, accepting applications from young illegal immigrants for the temporary right to live and work openly in the United States without fear of deportation.

An estimated 1.7 million young people who arrived in the United States illegally as children could qualify for the new Department of Homeland Security program, and thousands are expected to pay the $465 application fee for a “deferred action” permit that would protect them from deportation for at least two years. Many began lining up earlier this week at their native countries’ embassies and consulates to get passports and other records needed to apply.

Just hanging out with Joe 8/25/12

This great looking guy is my nephew Zach.  You can see who the other dude is.

I think that maybe a person’s politics are genetic.  Most of my relatives are fairly alike politically.  I can go through 20 relatives and only about 3 or 4 are conservative.  Censored has done a  lot of reading about  the brains of conservatives being different than the brains of liberals.  What else have we found out about how people get their politics?  I would say my parents were moderate to conservative.

Do you share your parents’ political views?  How about your siblings and cousins?

I am probably closer to my parents’ view than my brothers are.

Why Medicare?

President Johnson signs Medicare in to law

The Republicans have shot themselves in the foot right out of the gate.  Why has the debate gone to the discussion of Medicare?  Americans love their Medicare.  My own grandmother threatened to “slit my throat” over it  (still not sure why).  1946 is the first year of the baby boomer.  Guess what happened in 2011?  The first babyboomers “came of age”–they became 65 and eligible for Medicare.

Teresa Sullivan: After the UVA Crisis

WARNING:  I can not watch on IE but I can on Chrome and Foxfire.  You can listen on IE.  Perhaps its just my system.

The crisis that hit UVA last June is now over.  Rector Dragas has apologized to Sullivan and the Board of Visitors, new board members are in place, and yet there is still that edge…that edge things have when everyone is playing at making nice but noses are still out of joint.

Last June, UVA, Virginia’s Harvard of the South was in crisis because popular  President  Teresa Sullivan got the boot, out of the clear blue.  Rector Dregas was less than honest in her reporting.  She had led the press and President Sullivan to believe the board was unanimous in its decision to can Sullivan when in fact, some of the board of visitors didn’t know anything about it.

Horse-gate: bullying, arm-twisting and conflict of interest

I just finished making my blog rounds this morning.   This BOCS flicking us off is not going to go away.   I still am shocked that the bloggers were accused of bullying and arm twisting by Corey Stewart.  Corey, I remember when you were the king of bullying and arm-twisting and used some of the bloggers to deliver your message(s).  It hasn’t been that long ago.  I have folders full of examples.  Shall I trot those out?  You probably need to rein in your urge to say whatever comes to your mind.

BOCS Meeting Pt. 2: Speechless in Manassas

I finally listened to the missing Rainbow-gate tapes, otherwise known as the Board of County Supervisors Meeting pt. 2.  It reminded me of listening to the radio, back in olden days before we had a TV in every room.  I had to guess who was speaking.

Who was that masked man?

Yes.  The supervisors left the dais and went to dinner with the Service Authority, only to reconvene and mysteriously conduct business in a less than open manner.  I didn’t realize that there was an electronic recording of the rest of the meeting.   That was probably a good thing.

I have some responses to what I heard.  First off, I distinctly heard some members of the BOCS attempting to goad Mr. Candland into calling out another board member.  Gentleman that he is, Mr. Candland refused the bait.  However, I am not a gentleman.  It is a birth defect.

Make no mistake, supervisors!  You know damn good and well why this has all come about.  I also know all of you can read.  The Candland Resolution clearly said that if the board is giving someone money, recuse yourself if you or a family member is on the board of the non-profit getting money.  Stop with the hysterionics.  That’s a pretty common business practice and it doesn’t mean don’t serve.  Bad deflection.

UPDATE:  See comment #39 about Pete Candland’s staffer.

The dog days are here for sure.  No relief in sight from the heat and the F word has come to town.  (F word = FAIR in Moon-ese)

Manassas is cleaning up after all the big political activity.  Will Prince William  be getting any of the action?  Who pays for all of that?  Will the campaign reimburse the City for the extra police efforts and the work of municipal employees?

Was PWC ever reimbursed for the 3 events in 2008?

The Olympics are over.  Congratulations to Team USA.  What a performance!!!  The Republican VP candidate has been chosen.  Manassas is in clean up mode.  The BOCS is in a holding pattern.  Is there really any news?  You tell us.
