Do you think Clint Eastwood hurt the RNC or Mitt Romney? Did his appearance detract from the choreographed show where we were supposed to get to know Mitt? What have we talked about today?I like Clint Eastwood and feel badly for him. I fear he will be remembered for this rather than his great movies.

55 Thoughts to “Jon Stewart: The Old Man and the Seat”

  1. Steve Randolph

    http://www.theonion.com/articles/clint-eastwood-gives-bizarre-speech,29399/

Understand the chair has refused to talk with the media.

  2. SlowpokeRodriguez

The chair has followers on Facebook and Twitter, I am told.

  3. SlowpokeRodriguez

The best part is that the White House got indignant about the whole thing. It really got under Obama’s skin! Although that skin is awful thin to begin with!

    1. It was disrespectful, especially the language part.

It shouldn’t have been done…because of the Romneys who don’t talk like that and because of the Obamas who don’t talk like that.

I do. So it isn’t that I am prissy. I hope Obama was indignant. I was indignant on behalf of both candidates.

  4. Lyssa

I got a kick out of it. It’s being over thought and over analyzed – he’s an entertainer. I thought it beat some passionate congress(person) from somewhere.

    Relax….

    1. I think the point is, it has consumed the news and left people talking about the skit, rather than the candidates.

  5. SlowpokeRodriguez

Oh, and while I see where people would say he acted drunk…..I’m thinking he acted more like age is beginning to take its toll. He reminded me of the last time I heard Arlen Specter talk, just before he changed parties. You could tell by listening that he was losing any sharpness he had pretty fast.

    1. You are more than likely correct @pokie. (yes, it hurt to say that)

He is still directing films, and good ones at that. Maybe the speaking goes first.

  6. Lyssa

There really not much to say about the candidates. Such critics….

    1. Colbert and Stewart are having a great deal of fun with Eastwood. I think it is sad. Now I know what he was doing (I never saw the chair the first 2 times I saw it) he doesn’t sound drunk. He sounds…Eastwood. Just not the way he should be remembered.

I am thinking about the platforms and the supreme court. Once I do that…no contest.

I am not going to purposely vote to take this country back to the 50s…and not the good things about the 50s.

  7. Cobert pointed out what a humble, modest person Neil Armstrong was. He never thought he deserved special recogition. What a contrast to some of these A-holes who think because they ran a football down to the end zone they should be worshipped, or politicians…don’t get me started.

  8. Lyssa

    Eastwood is pro-choice.

  9. SlowpokeRodriguez

    Lyssa :
    Eastwood is pro-choice.

So are a lot of Republicans. I am too, until we get too far into the pregnancy. I’m no fan of the gruesome scenes. Problem is, there is no middle ground. The right wing nuts want to exceptions, and the left wing nuts want drive-thru abortions up to and including delivery date. Things like morning after pill? Abso-frickin-lutely!

    1. No, pro choice people don’t want late term abortions and you know that isn’t true.

They want to stick to the Roe v Wade outline.

What pro choice want to keep that is the right to abortion for fetal anomoly past first trimester. They don’t want to have to go through panels and boards to be able to do this. They want to keep the matter between their physician and themselves.

Once the pro-life gang gets hold of it, a 16 week abortion suddenly becomes a 38 week abortion.

I am tired of being mischaracterized. Remember that my opinions were formed when I was very young because of the thalidamide crisis.

      @Pokie

Well, he’s not that bad yet, but you can tell he’s just a little off.

  11. Lyssa

    @SlowpokeRodriguez

Agree. I thought it would soften her up.

    1. It’s Joe Arpaio I called a jerk.

I like Clint Eastwood, oh yee of little faith.

  12. Lyssa

Some think he’d be a good Police Chief for PWC.

    1. Some people would probably like to resurrect Adolph Hitler and Joseph Stalin also.

  13. Starryflights

I liked when Eastwood attacked Obama for not bringing home our troops from Afghanistan immediately and the crowd erupted into cheers. I agree with him on Afghanistan. Romney never even mentioned Afghanistan despite our having thousands of troops there.

  14. SlowpokeRodriguez

    Moon-howler :
Some people would probably like to resurrect Adolph Hitler and Joseph Stalin also.

Sadly, DNA shows that I am one of only 2% of white males in the world distantly related to Stalin.

  15. Lyssa

Mao, Leopold II may have been worse….

    Moon-howler :
Some people would probably like to resurrect Adolph Hitler and Joseph Stalin also.

    Yes, they’re called Democrats.

  17. Elena

    Slow,
You, on a regular basis, speak with people here on the blog who represent the majority of pro choice people. What people do you know that espouse unfettered access to abortions? 88% of abotions happen in the first trimester. I shared a heart wrenching story of couple that went through a late term abortion, they are the exception to 88 % of abortions.

There are restriction on abortion access and I support those restrictions, but first trimester, the majority of abortions, are the ones that are most at risk by the Republlican Party.

    1. @Elena and 98% of them happen by week 16. It might be interesting to see why 10% are happening between week 12 and 16. What might be done, if anything, to avoid the procedure that late?

  18. Elena

You are about to be persona non grata on this blog Cato. Having come from a family full of Democrats and Jews, to suggest ANYONE of them would ressurect Hitler is personally offensive. I am pretty sure my cousin Izzy, an auschwitz survivor, would not resurrect Hitler.

  19. Elena

I find it quite interesting that Republicans hail Neil Armstrong and yet, if they had their way, he would never have been an astronaut, never been the first man to walk on the moon, etc.

Who PAID for his education? Who PAID for the R&D into space? Who paid for the rocket ship? GOVERNMENT!

  20. SlowpokeRodriguez

You think you posted that? You didn’t post that!! Government (Al Gore) invented and built the Internet….otherwise, you couldn’t have posted that!!

But let anyone suggest we protect our borders, and guess who that person winds up being? No, not YOU specifically, not Moon, but people you know!!

  22. Elena

    Slow,
I don’t know anyone, personally, that I worked with during the immigration debacle that was not an advocate for border protection. Obama has invested more tax payer money in border control and deported more people. What do the republicans do in return, oh yeah, you should know, BITCH MOAN AND COMPLAIN!

No, I spoke out against the obvious hatred that was growing towards one specific segment of my community, Latinos. I was raised that when you allow one group of people to be scapegoated and dehumanzied, you put the entire community at risk.

I believe it IS possible to have a cogent discussion about immigration and border protection without calling babies “anchors”, children parasites, women dogs, and suggesting that immigrants carry MRSA!

    1. @Elena, or call people “dog food” or seeing too many brown faces at the bus stop.

It absolutely is possible to have discussions about real problems without dehumanizing the people.

I lived in Atlanta as a young person during the lunch counter days. I am all too familiar with belittling language that reduces the human worth of those whose existence some people are uncomfortable with.

People can whine, go into denial all they want. I know what I heard then, and I know what I heard 4 years ago. There was little difference.

Did I mention I bumped into the IMperial Wizard of the KKK while in Davidson’s Dept Store in Atlanta during a protest? I have heard the words up close and personal. Actually, he wasn’t even a redneck. Can’t even use that as an excuse. He could have lived next door to me, this man and his friend dressed in full Klan silks.
(The bosses wore silks, not sheets)

  23. Elena

Not sure what your point was Slow regarding government investmet in space. It is a no brainer that the new republican party advocates only the bare necessities to support this country and R&D aint a part of that plan! College investment via pell grants and affordable student loans are NOT a part of that plan!

  24. Elena

Wow, talk about government investment in education! This country can invest in more than just wars!

Armstrong attended college and grad school on the Holloway Plan.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_L._Holloway,_Jr.#Holloway_Plan

While directing the Navy’s demobilization, Holloway also chaired an influential board that laid the foundation for the postwar Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC). Named for its chairman, the Holloway Board was charged with “the development of the proper form, system, and method of education of officers in the postwar United States Navy.” Its members included Williams College president James P. Baxter III, Illinois Institute of Technology president Henry T. Heald, Cornell University provost Arthur S. Adams, Rear Admiral Felix L. Johnson, Rear Admiral Stuart H. Ingersoll, Captain Charles D. Wheelock, Captain John P. W. Vest, Commander Charles K. Duncan, and Commander Douglas M. Swift. The report of the Holloway Board became known as the Holloway Plan, and it dramatically expanded the avenues by which officer candidates could enter the regular Navy.[6]

  25. Elena

My favorite line from the Jon Stewart Clip “Bull F&*cking Sh*t” when referencing this pretend fictional world where Romeny recalled Republican who came “together to support this President” after the election.

What effing world is Romney living in? I remeber Tea party rally’s with hatelful rhetoric in April, town hall meetings with vicious attacks against the President, likening him to Adolf Hitler, to JEWISH legislators no less. No, the hate for Obama was palatable, it was Bill Clinton hate on steroids.

    1. Totally agree, Elena. We have a mutual favorite line. Teaparty really tried to do a make over. I remember those Hitler posters too. Not everyone. But some. Thats why I like having a real organization. You can hold people accountable.

Bill Clinton Hate on steroids! Great line. Now Bill Clinton walks on water, at least publically.

  26. @SlowpokeRodriguez

I only know one person who advocates open borders. Seriously. He is a local blog meister. No, not Greg, obviously.

  27. SlowpokeRodriguez

    Elena :
No, the hate for Obama was palatable, it was Bill Clinton hate on steroids.

But did it rise to the level of George W. Bush hate?

  28. Elena

Nothing will surpass the hatred directed towards Obama.

  29. SlowpokeRodriguez

    Elena :
Nothing will surpass the hatred directed towards Obama.

    Uh-huh….says the hyper-left!

  30. Elena

Look, Bush Jr. came into power under extremely contentious circumstances, hanging chads etc! He lost the popular vote, imagie if it had gone the other way!

We end up going to war in Iraq against strong oppostion from citizens and a few brave politicians. I remember what it was like to DARE suggest we shouldn’t go into Iraq, you were practically labeled a terrorist sympathizer!

However, the difference I see, is that when people started talking “truther” bullshit about Bush being a complicit part of 9-11, NO ONE, not one media outlet gave any real credible air time to such nonsense. Yet, birther crap was actually given validity by Fox news and many politicians on the right. It was outrageous.

  31. Elena

    Moon,
watched a great interview with the science physicist guru Degrassi. It was truly enlightening. He talked about all the discoveries that came out of R&D with government funding. To think there is a part that is so concerned about debt they are willing to gut so much of what makes the great discoveries possible. Can’t see the forest through the trees and I imagine, if the republlicans get what they want, they will have buyers remorse for sure.

  32. kelly_3406

    @Elena

You are quite mistaken, Elena. The Holloway Plan required Armstrong to serve in the Navy in return for his scholarship. Republicans have no problem with that. It’s one thing to provide targeted scholarships with a service commitment, but quite another to take over the entire college loan program. Government involvement is a losing proposition in the long run because it drives up the cost while reducing the quality of a university degree. This is driving an education bubble:

    http://www.amazon.com/Higher-Education-Bubble-Harlan-Reynolds/dp/1594036659/?_encoding=UTF8&s=books&tag=insta0c-20&linkCode=ur2&qid=1336916334&camp=1789&sr=1-1&creative=9325

Republicans also have no problem with investment in R&D, including the Space Program. The issue is when R&D is politically motivated and grants are awarded as political favors (I.e. Solyndra).

    1. Why do you say that Solyndra was a political favor? @Kelly

Was it a someone who knows another someone?

  33. Elena

    Kelly,
Obviously I was making a broad point regarding school loans and affordability. I am making an even broader point regarding federal money and investment in medical research and science.

I see an obsession with balancing the budget while sacraficing long term investment in the areas of science and technology, those pesky areas of research that keep us competetive in a global market.

FYI, solyndra was on Bush’s list for government loan guarantee. I hate it when facts get in the way of Faux News propoganda!

    http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2011/nov/17/david-plouffe/solyndra-loan-george-w-bush-david-plouffe/
    Our ruling

Plouffe said that the loan guarantee program that awarded half a billion dollars in guarantees to Solyndra “was supported by President Bush.” The program was created on Bush’s watch by a law he signed and promoted. The program grew under the Obama administration, which ultimately awarded Solyndra’s loan guarantee under a new section of the law created by the stimulus. The Bush administration, though, promoted the loan guarantee program, and Bush himself touted it on his way out of office. There’s also evidence his administration specifically prioritized Solyndra’s project. We find Plouffe’s statement Mostly True.

I think it is a shame that this country has not tackled the crisis of skyrocketing cost for colleg tuition. Our next best greates mind may never be discovered because they could not afford college.

This is a crisis that BOTH parties should be tackling or in less then a century, I cannot imagine that we will still be a world leader.

    1. Great Britain has also fallen flat on this issue, as I recall.

  34. Cato the Elder

    Elena :
You are about to be persona non grata on this blog Cato. Having come from a family full of Democrats and Jews, to suggest ANYONE of them would ressurect Hitler is personally offensive. I am pretty sure my cousin Izzy, an auschwitz survivor, would not resurrect Hitler.

Know what Elena? If you want to make me PNG go for it.

But before I go, let me impart to you a little info about the man you’re shilling for. I never judge a man on what he says, only on what he does.

1.) continuation of Patriot Act, warrant less wiretaps – check.

2.) indefinite detention of US citizens by the military without trial – check

3.) state sanctioned assassinations of US citizens without due process – check

Here’s my question – how does Barack Obama differ in any conceivable way from Dick Cheney?

I mean, it’s not even arguable, all the things I listed are fact, not conjecture take from some wingnut website. Let’s eliminate the Hitler reference, do you not see echoes of every tyrant in history in these actions?

I’m not even shilling for Romney here and saying that it would get better because I have no clue, but you can’t be OK with these things, are you?

  35. Elena

Great point Cato, so how many times have I heard you call Cheney or Bush Hitler? Um, NONE.

I think I will add you to my list of people requiring rehab. Um NO, in fact, the only people that had the balls to stand up against the Patriot Act, if memory serves me correctly, were Bob Barr and Dennis Kusinich (sp?).

Seriously though, do you think Obama could get portions of the Patriot Act rescinded? Not in a million effing years. You can’t add torture to your list though I see, at least Obama put an end to that. I imagine Romney, given the people who are supporting him from the Bush administration will love to bring that one back. I predict, if Romney wins, those neo cons will have us in a war with Iran.

Obama tried to close Gitmo, that went over the onions in a fruit salad if I recall. I am pretty sure history will view our over-reaction to a bunch of thugs (“war” on terror) and not look judge us too kindly. Iraq was a collossal mistake, I said it then and I will say it for forever.

  36. kelly_3406

    @Elena
As somebody who hires people with technical degrees, I see very little evidence that great minds do not make it into college. If anything, it appears that the reverse is true. There are some very mediocre minds that had no business attending college, but nevertheless graduated with far less capability than what is expected and needed to compete.

As for politically inspired support for R&D, you have to find some sources other than left-wing fact checkers to find out the truth. It turns out that the Bush Administration turned down Solyndra’s application two weeks before Obama took office. There were also signs that Solyndra was in financial trouble, but the Obama Administration continued its support, rather than cut off financing. The story is still evolving, but to dismiss it as a bipartisan venture gone bad simply ignores the key facts.

    http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/solyndra-loan-now-treasury-launching-investigation/t/story?id=14521917

  37. Elena

    Kelly,
Do you REALLY want to go there, talk about cronyism and politics? Does Haliburton ring any bells? What about appointing a man with NO experience in emergency government services…..”way to go Brownie!”

I love it, they are “left wing fact checkers” when the right is in crosshairs, but your best friend when its reversed.

Kelly, I guess I am just going to go on common sense and college affordiblity, or lack thereof I should say. Only a republican mindset would believe that making college affordable is bad thing!

Furthermore, you are not addressing my point regarding all the great discoveries that have been the result of government initiatives, whether it be space, medicine, or other types of technology. Cut out the government programs and the grants for those discoveries and I believe that OTHER countries will find themselves on the cutting edge of new industries and America will be picking up the crumbs.

  38. Elena

    Love Neil Degrassi!
His passionate presentation on the need for NASA funding and bold dreams!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQhNZENMG1o

  39. kelly_3406

    @Elena
Yes. I do want to go there. The past performances of Bush, Cinton, Kennedy or whomever else you bring up are irrelevant. Bush has been out of office for four years, so the relevant question is how has Obama done. Has scientific achievement been encouraged by the policies of this administration? Despite a bad economy when Obama took office, has there been reasonable progress to reduce unemployment and make us better off? Has the overall national security of the nation improved? My answer to these questions is no.

There has been political favoritism in this administration, whether it is funding Solyndra, pushing the Chevy Volt, or subsidizing renewable energy, and the end result in each case has been wasted taxpayer dollars.

I do FAVOR government funding of certain types of research, but it has to be done right. Obama has provided no overall vision other than a push for renewable energy and green initiatives … hardly a bold plan for the future.

Even though Obama increased funding for science, virtually nothing has come of it. There have been no great breakthroughs. Obama cancelled the Constellation program, which was intended to be the next manned space program to take us from low earth orbit back to the moon and hopefully beyond. Neil Armstrong strongly criticized the president for canceling the Constellation program.

Government funding under past presidents has produced breathtaking scientific discovery. That’s not something that can be (truthfully) claimed by the current administration, however. If anything, scientific innovation has declined due to the limited goals and political

    1. @Kelly

Subsidizing renewable energy initiatives shouldn’t be dependent on what political party is in power. This is getting to be a been there done that sort of thing. The funding comes in the funding goes. That results in always having to go back to square one.

If the Republicans would stop pulling the rug out from under renewable energy initiatives, we might have made further progress.

Look what happened to renewable energy initiatives when Reagan came in to office.

  40. SlowpokeRodriguez

All subsidies are government’s way of screwing with the free market, and therefore are undesirable. End them all.

  41. Elena

Slow, two words for you ……… “OY VEY”

In case you haven’t notices, Government “subsidies” support the entire metro area! We call that the defense economy 😉

  42. Elena

It’s funny, seems to be working out great for Germany! They have a very robust renewable energy industry.
