In memory of 4 fallen heroes

Sadly we mourn the loss of Chris Stevens, Sean Smith, Glen Doherty and Tyrone Woods who were killed attempting to defend the consulate in Libya.  RIP, Americans.

The White House has stated that the attack on the embassy was terrorism.

This is a regular open  thread, just dedicated to the Americans.

For a second I thought the French grew themselves a pair but then I saw that they were shutting down embassies in advance of a cartoon spread depicting the prophet.

“Romney seems to have contempt not just for Democrats, but for
tens of millions who intended to vote for him … he should drop
out in favor of the Ryan-Rubio ticket we deserve.”
    William Kristol
    The Weekly Standard

    – OK with me, as long as they stay with last names beginning with “R”.

  6. Morris Davis

According to Forbes, the wealth of the nation’s 400 richest people is $1.7T, an increase of 13% over the past year. The average net worth of the 400 richest is $4.2B. The wealth of the 400 (.00000125% of the population) equals 1/8 (.125%) of the entire US economy.

Republicans have a funny way of putting the same dude up again and again and again, no matter how many times he loses. McAmnesty whipped Romney last time, so what do the Republicans do? Let’s keep putting him back up there! Anyone remember Fimian? Can’t wait to run HIM again! 🙂
Anyway, you never know, sometimes I think people have looked into the mouth of the beast and said “It’s not so bad!” So Obama just might win.

    1. You know, I think you are on to something, Pokie.

How many more times will Fimian run? How about George Allen? Dick Black finally won after how many tries?

The problem is, they keep caving in to some far right religious types. Most Americans don’t want to live in a theocracy, even the religious ones.

  8. SlowpokeRodriguez

What else is new? CBO came out with some new stats on how huge a middle-class tax increase Obamacare will be. That’s nice. Morris tells us that the top 400 have 1.7 Trillion. And Obama has added 6 Trillion to our debt. So if your socialist dreams came true and you could take all their money, it would do much good against Obama is his Platinum Card!!

    1. What am I supposed to draw from your conclusions, pokie?

All I can come up with is you still don’t like Obama.

  9. SlowpokeRodriguez

Well, as you say..I was on the fence…right up to then!

  10. Irony: funny how Republicans want to take away pensions and privatize social security. Those are the things many in the senior demographic get taxed on.

Surely MR doesn’t want to increase those numbers?

  11. Marin, no email from Blue yet.

  12. Pat Herve

Funny, I remember a Republican Vice President saying that deficits do not matter – I guess they only matter where there is a Democrat in the White House.

  13. SlowpokeRodriguez

    Pat Herve :
Funny, I remember a Republican Vice President saying that deficits do not matter – I guess they only matter where there is a Democrat in the White House.

Well, I suppose if you’re pro-Trillion-dollar deficit, you’re in the right camp (Obama’s).

    1. I haven’t seen Republicans do anythng aobut it other than move their lips. No real solutions.

the super committee all came out there with pledges. wowowowowwow

  14. Great lines out Clint Eastwood. He said any people stupid enough to ask him to speak at a political convention got what they deserved. I spit coffee on the computer screen.

And I haven’t seen Democrats pass a budget in…how many years, now?

  16. SlowpokeRodriguez

Oh, not passing a budget is called “governing” in lefty-circles.

  17. A pictorial history of Obama worship.

In case you Obama voters need some posters.

Picture the reaction the above was done with ANY other President or candidate, especially a Republican.

    http://youtu.be/7xxgRUyzgs0

    1. I am sorry we are going to have to have this discussion. First off, I can’t think of any Republican that has been elected or who has run that would inspire any of this. Oh wait…what about …a name is coming to me….new school in PWC…part of a highway….Ronald W Reagan! That’s it. You have fogotten about the gipper. There is a Reagan school, street, building, airport etc in every town. There are so many pictures of Reagan I can’t even enumerate. Pretty much the same with JFK and Clinton.

In the first place, you understand that this isn’t all published by one organization or any part of the DNC?

You also are aware that Obama is a very positive role model for a lot of kids who frankly, might be lacking a role model? Frankly, I think its nice to see kids having a “hero” who isn’t a football player or basketball star or a rapper.

Not only is Obama a hero for kids, but he is a symbol of hope for a lot of people. I believe I have shared the story of my hair stylist’s uncle before. He was nearly 90 and in very poor health. He was definitely in the last months of his life. He had never voted before. He said he had never felt the need to vote. It didn’t matter.

when Obama won his party’s nomination, the old uncle got dressed, found a ride, and went and registered to vote. He said he was going to live to election day if it killed him. He said he never thought he would live long enough to see a black man have a chance to be president.

On election day, he got up, got dressed, and went and voted for the one and only time in his life.

I know I can’t possibly feel what this man felt but I got chills when his niece told me.

Let’s not make fun of those who hold Obama is esteem. There are too many of us holding on to our Reagans and our Kennedys and our Clintons.

  18. Steve Randolph

Fund raising letter from Mitt Romney arrived today:

“Mr. Randolph, you are one of America’s most notable Republicans …”

My goodness – didn’t even know I was a Republican, much less
“one of America’s most notable” ones.

    1. Bwaaahahahahahahahahahahaha!

      May we have your autograph?

  19. Steve Randolph

    “The Boys of Autumn”

    – Barack Obama- the lanky lefty riles righty batters with
taunts of “you didn’t hit that”. First Sri Lankan MLB ptcher.

    – Mitt Romney – Not very popular with team mates. Rides
in from bullpen on dressage horse. Refuses to divulge E.R.A..
Throws left, right and far right.

    – Bill Clinton – The top relief specialist. Had control problems earlier
    in career.

  20. There are too many of us holding on to our Reagans and our Kennedys and our Clintons.

You say that like its a good thing.

Reagan would have been the last person to want such things. Its time to let go.

But, instead of public buildings honoring dead Presidents, which actually has tradition… And the Reagan pics don’t tend to be wall coverings…. but either way… I don’t think having anything greater than a 8×10 glossy is healthy……they are just politicians.

Those pictures on the walls….the halo pics….really? Ok, then.

    1. Most people have a favorite president. It isn’t good or bad. Just is.

  21. Obama just lied on Univision during the interview.
“There’s a report that 14 agents were responsible for the operation but shouldn’t the attorney general, Eric Holder, he should have known about that and if he didn’t, should you fire him?”

“Well, first of all, I think it’s important to understand that the Fast and Furious program was a field-initiated program, begun under the previous administration,” Obama said. “When Eric Holder found out about it, he discontinued it.

That Obama reply is an out and out lie that has been debunked over and over again. Bush’s similar program ended before Obama took office. Bush’s program, Wide Receiver, did not allow guns to be smuggled willy-nilly to cartels, especially to be found at crime scenes. THOSE guns had tracking devices and when some few went missing because the devices did not work, Bush’s admin ended the program. The Mexican authorities knew about that one. And HOLDER admitted all this.

    1. Remember Reagan and those guns? Oliver North? Give it a rest.

  22. SlowpokeRodriguez

    Cargosquid :
    Obama just lied

That just means it’s a day that ends in “y”

  23. @Cargosquid

Different cultures honor their heroes differently. Cargo, for a southerner you know less about black culture than anyone I have ever known.

Have you ever seen how those little old ancient catholic ladies have busts of Kennedy sitting around?

Like I should talk. I have a small, tasteful, picture of Robert E. Lee in the living room. It was given to me by my dear Yankee friend Tom who wanted it out of his house.

  24. @Cargosquid

I hate Obama I hate Obama I hate Obama I hate Obama I hate Obama.

You are ignoring discussion and just going on a one man rant.

  25. @Moon-howler
And your point? Back then the press asked hard questions. They asked them of Reagan and North. That’s why we need a Republican President. So the press will do their job.

How black culture honors their heroes? That was a whole lot of white folk in those pictures. That’s how LIBERALS honor their heroes. And no, I have NEVER seen little old ancient catholic ladies owning busts of Kennedy. The little old Catholic ladies that I know have no bust….statues or otherwise….;) Especially of Kennedy.

Ignoring discussion? What discussion? Open thread. “I hate Obama” comes from pointing out that he’s lying? Ok then.

    1. @Cargo, You don’t think the press asks hard questions now?

As I recall, some of those joint congressional committees asked some tough questions.

Did you realize that the ACLU came to the rescue for Ollie North? Who would have thunk it. Bet he still bad mouths them.

  26. Steve Randolph

Oh my gosh, it’s “quadruple witching season”!!

  27. @Moon-howler
Yep…the press asks hard questions…of Republicans.

Ok…they came to the rescue of Ollie….what’s your point? I don’t get it. There are a lot of low level aides that get investigated.

    1. I think Romney had the wrong group for victim mentality. Republicans are always complaining about being treated wrong. I dont think one group gets harder questions than the other. Geez. they want stories. Period.

No reason about ACLU statement. I just find it ironic. That probably bothered North.

Who was it earlier in the week who suggested that political party was governed by peer pressure?

  28. @Moon-howler
    Not me.

Interesting thought…but not sure what is meant by that idea.

    1. I wasnt either at first. I think I understand it more now though. How many people get peer pressured at work or at church to be a Democrat or a Republican?

  29. Good question.

I’m the token conservative/libertarian proponent of properly applied violence at my church. I don’t respond, well, submit, to peer pressure but I can see how it might be hard to speak out against consensus. I do respond…usually by saying what I think. We have discussions after service and I’m always being asked to attend because I give a …..different…point of view many times.

At work… Well, I haven’t seen it any of my jobs.

I think that a lot of political philosophy comes from your parents. My mother, who I thought of as “right wing” because of her anti-communism and her libertarian leanings (she didn’t have any idea what a libertarian is.) is considered as a liberal by my very conservative Catholic brother. She was one of the few women that I knew/know that loved Rush Limbaugh. My sister is a bleeding heart liberal in Maryland. But we blame her long association with her husband…a former Long Island New Yorker.

I think that I get my basis for philosophy from her. Then I came “of age” during Carter and his malaise and Reagan and his restoration of American greatness. My travels in Central America and my training in intel brought home what authoritarian and socialist policies wrought.

  30. I don’t think Reagan restored American greatness. I think Reagan ushered in a meanness and selfishness in politics. I don’t blame him necessarily although I think he certainly took advantage of it.

I understand that if you work defense in this area it is not smart to go to work and announce you are a Democrat.

  31. Paul Ryan is getting booed by Seniors at AARP convention. Good for them. He is telling them he would appeal obamacare. They don’t like that one little bit.

I dont know why he would say that to them. He must not understand the doughnut hole.

ACA closes the doughnut hole. right now medicine is half. Mr. Howler just picked up something for 70. He would be paying about 125-130 for it if it werent for ACA. For people taking a lot of medicine, those prices can soar.

  33. @Cargosquid

I meant you had victim mentality on behalf of Republicans.

The way I see it, Republicans are very aggressive and what has happened to them this past year is their own fault, their own undoing.

  34. @Moon-howler
Of course they don’t. AARP is in cahoots with the admin to make BILLIONS.

Is it victim mentality when the press actually DOES treat the parties differently?

    1. I have noticed that treating parties differently on Faux News. I don’t know, is it?

Oh geez, now AARP is the bad guy. Who is aARP supposedly scamming off of?

They lobby for seniors. their dues are dirt cheap. Oh well. You can join them now, btw. 50 is the magic age. After I sent them back the first FU I rethought their offer and have been a member ever since.

    2. Who isn’t in cahoots with Obama to make billions? The NRA and ??????

  35. Morris Davis

Romney finally released his tax return. He made $13.7M and paid $1.9M, which is a 14.1% rate. He only claimed $2.25M of the $4M he gave in charitable donations in order to make sure he reached the at least 13% rate as he had pledged. You may recall in an interview in July he said that anyone who paid more in taxes than legally required wasn’t qualified to be president.

    http://www.boston.com/news/source/2012/09/mitt_romney_rel.html

    1. His wife said they absolutely would NOT be releasing those because it would just give people more ammo to pick out. (paraphrasing)

  36. Morris Davis

Paul Ryan addressed the AARP convention today where he was booed, particularly when he talked about repealing Obamacare. Some members of the crowd took up the Rep (R-SC) Joe Wilson chant “you lie!” during Ryan’s speech.

    http://firstread.nbcnews.com/_news/2012/09/21/14015076-ryan-gets-boos-at-aarp-conference?lite

    1. I heard the booing on TV. I love it when seniors get all gray panthery.

  37. Steve Randolph

Not surprised Homer voted for Romney, but trust Marge will even
it out by going for Obama.

  38. Emma

@Morris Davis Wow, they must have taken all those “civility” lectures to heart.

  39. SlowpokeRodruguez

Anyone watching the protests going on around the middle east? Anyone want to remind me again of how much money we borrow from China to shovel over there? Anyone know what’s happening in China and Japan in the absence of any power in the White House?

  40. SlowpokeRodruguez

And my injudicious use of the word “middle” landed me in moderation.

    1. That isn’t why you ended up in moderation. Middle isnt a bad word. There are only 2.

  41. Emma

“Middle isnt a bad word. There are only 2.”

That would have shortened George Carlin’s routine considerably.

    1. @Emma–sorry only 2 words to land you in moderation here. None of them are on Carlin’s list.

  42. Morris Davis

    @Emma

It is shocking when senior citizens start behaving like a congressman.

  43. @Morris Davis

Talk to charter bus drivers. They will tell you that seniors are worst behaved of all.

  44. punchak

Not much written or said about Jesse Jackson’s (and the State Dept) successful negotiation with the President of Gambia for the release of two Americans who have been in jail in Gambia for quite some time.
