18 Thoughts to “40 Days to Save America, including special prayer hands”

  1. That was a classic example of blasphemy. May the good Lord have mercy on us all.

  2. Interesting reaction. Rick, this is probably not the blog for you. I thought it was a very funny Colbert skit.

To me, blasphemy is taking the Lord’s name in vain. In my world, I think God has a sense of humor and would have laughed at the skit.

Whoa, Rick! Can you take your talibanesque comments and attitude somewhere else please. We don’t buy into that holy than thou BS here.

I mean, seriously, “blasphmey”, who the hell says that anymore! Oh wait, isn’t a poor girl being prosecuted over in the middle east for just that offense!

Real blasphemy to me entails people dying because they are uninsured!

  4. Emma

The video is about as funny as Colbert mimicking the prayers and religious rituals that were likely performed by the 9-11 Muslim highjackers in preparation for their martyrdom. Oh, wait, he would never do that…

    1. Does it count if Colbert is a Christian?

I suppose you have somewhat of a point. I didn’t see that skit.

Remember, I am a JV (junior varsity) and we tend to be fairly irreverent and just assume God has a strange sense of humor. I thought Colbert was hilarious. My favorite part was the reference to Fluke being the whore of babylon.

    2. I can’t find him in that skit. I would think that would be tasteless because of Americans dying.

I also wouldn’t mimic Muslims because they seem to be humorless about their religion. Most Christians aren’t humorless about their religion. There is always a church joke.

Speaking of, has everyone seen the one about dogs going to heaven?

I should ask Cindy B if Trinity believes dogs go to heaven. Its about time for the blessing of the pets again.

    Emma,
come on, even you have to acknowledge the idea that G-d is on Romney’s side is probably a tad over reaching! Sorry, people using G-d in this election is just a offensive as other parts of the world where they believe G-d in on THEIR side. Two words, OY VEY!

    1. Oy Vey! I am reminded of the words of Bobby Dylan….

      “With God On Our Side”

Oh my name it is nothin’
      My age it means less
      The country I come from
      Is called the Midwest
I’s taught and brought up there
      The laws to abide
And the land that I live in
      Has God on its side.

Oh the history books tell it
      They tell it so well
      The cavalries charged
      The Indians fell
      The cavalries charged
      The Indians died
      Oh the country was young
      With God on its side.

Of course the skit was ‘funny,’ that’s what Colbert does. It was also saucy, smart, and snarky. And it was also blasphemy; mocking sacred things and persons is blasphemy. This video is a textbook case. And that is a violation of commandment #1, ( for those of us who still believe in such things) no matter how well done or entertaining. He can have at Romney, Perry, and the rest- fair game. But mockingly invoking the Holy Trinity in a clown suit, is, well you know…
    blasphemy.

Does God have a sense of humor, of course. I’m reminded of that every time I look in a mirror!

    1. I rewatched and didn’t see the trinity being mocked in a clown suit.

Speaking of the Trinity and Mitt Romney…I think the Mormons have the right idea about the Trinity. Their way makes a lot more sense to me. (They don’t believe the Trinity exists–God, Jesus and the Holy Ghost are each their own entity who work together, as I have had it explained to me)

The Mormons should get points for de-mystifying that one.

  7. If you don’t mind MW, I would like to stick around – never know when I might learn something.

    1. Alright Rick, you can stick around but ya gotta behave. Probably best not to comment on abortion. We get it, you aren’t pro-choice. We are are, and withiout apology so you know. We don’t mind people who are not pro choice but they have to be polite. We also don’t debate the ethics of abortion. That is very person. We are very strident about policy.

And, you can see, we do not share the same opinion on blasphamy. I have been known to blaspheme a time or two. You are entering the secular zone of a reform Jew (Elena) and a mainstream barely practicing protestant who is the daughter of an ex-Catholic and the wife of an ex Catholic who is horribly irreverent. Just wanted you to know….

  8. It is my sincere intent to be a gentleman. I respect the dignity of every person, and their God-given rights. When I say something, it is never intended to be offensive, irreverent, or hurtful. If it is please reread the first two sentences. In fact, I am trying to be helpful, and make everyone’s life better. I will do my very best to always speak honestly and truthfully. Since it appears you and I disagree on some very fundamental issues, you may find a great deal of what I say ‘impolite.’ I am not sure this can be helped. I try not to confuse being nice with being kind. I endeavor to see things as they are. I cannot say that I will not speak out on abortion – it is personal for me as well.
If this is not acceptable behavior, then you can always push the censor button. I understand – your blog, your rules.

  9. Yes indeed it is time again for the Blessing of the Animals at Trinity Episcopal Church in Old Town Manassas, next Sunday. October 7 at 2 pm.

    1. ARe cats blessed at the same time as animals? @Cindy

What keeps the obvious from happening? (all Hell breaking loose?)

  10. Cindy B

Cats, birds, snakes, every creature welcome. The rector says if your pet is hostile you may choose to bring a photo. If it’s a snake, please bring a cage. I’ve been to many a blessing and have not seen any melees. It’s almost like St. Francis is there. Or maybe the dogs from Blue Ridge Assistance Dogs set an orderly example.

    People welcome, too! http://www.trinityepiscopalchurch.org/default.asp

    1. @Cindy,

Its always a good plan to have good role models. Thank you for the information.

      Do the animals take communion?

Also is the service in the parking lot or back yard?
