Rachel Maddow: Virginia TRAP laws shame Virginia

It will be up to the women of Virginia to decide if the Republicans are going to make deeply personal decision for them.

The people on the board were threatened by the governor and the attorney general.

From last week– too much else was going on.

Richmond Times Dispatch:

At least one board member said members of the panel felt threatened by a memo from the office of Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli that warned board members could lose legal representation from the Attorney General’s Office if they ignored its advice.

In June, the board had voted 7-4 to exempt existing abortion clinics from the new construction standards, only to have Cuccinelli’s office refuse to certify the regulations.

Patriot High School: Studley’s dad helps him get a date

Ruff Ruff Where is Fido?

Washingtonpost.com:

A black helicopter hovering overhead can lead those below to become worried, scared or suspicious. But when a large aircraft positioned itself over a Prince William County high school’s football field last Wednesday afternoon, students who had just been released for the day excitedly watched as a stuffed bulldog with a red-bandanna parachute emerged.

The big-eyed pup drifted to the turf, delivering a message from a junior boy to a senior girl: “Fall Fest?”

Layabout and freeloader: What Mitt Romney really thinks of me….

If the deal wasn’t already sealed, here it goes.

From MotherJones.com:

During a private fundraiser earlier this year, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney told a small group of wealthy contributors what he truly thinks of all the voters who support President Barack Obama. He dismissed these Americans as freeloaders who pay no taxes, who don’t assume responsibility for their lives, and who think government should take care of them. Fielding a question from a donor about how he could triumph in November, Romney replied:

There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it. That that’s an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what…These are people who pay no income tax.

Romney went on: “[M]y job is is not to worry about those people. I’ll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives.”

They hate us because they hate us?

Every since 9-11 people have asked the question why?  All sorts of platitudes  have been give:  “They” are jealous of our freedoms, our material wealth, our material possessions.  None of these answers made the least bit of sense to me.  Why would any of those things make 11 grown men get in an aircraft and drive it into a building as a soaring speed, killing themselves and others? It doesn’t make sense.  Who is “they?”

Morning Joe, aka Joe Scarborugh seems to think he has the answer.  He say regardless of who he speaks with in the intelligence community, he gets told the same thing when he asks the question, why do they hate us:

1.  their religion

2.  their culture

3.  peer pressure

They hate us because they hate us.  No other reason.  Everything else is just an excuse.

I am not sure I agree with that and I am not sure I want to go to war over it if it is true.  Who is “they?”  Are we talking Middle Easterners?  Muslims?

Is Morning Joe right or is he full of it?

Prince William seen as key battleground

Richmond times Dispatch:

WOODBRIDGE, Va. —

In June 2008, Democrat Barack Obama kicked off his general election campaign at the Nissan Pavilion in western Prince William County.

Five months later, he closed his presidential campaign with an election-eve rally that drew about 85,000 people to the Prince William County Fairgrounds.

This Friday, Obama returns to the area, holding a re-election rally in Manassas, where GOP nominee Mitt Romney campaigned Aug. 11 with his running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan.

Prince William, a booming Northern Virginia exurb of 413,000 residents, is home to some of Virginia’s most prominent conservatives, including Del. Robert G. Marshall, R-Prince William, Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli and Corey A. Stewart, chairman of the county’s Board of Supervisors. Yet Obama carried Prince William by 25,000 votes in 2008, becoming the first Democratic nominee to win the county — and the state — in 44 years.

National Zoo Panda Mei Xiang Gives Birth To Cub

Mei Xiang

You can’t see it yet but you can hear it.  There is a new baby at the National Zoo.   What a surprise!

From the Washington Post:

The National Zoo’s giant panda Mei Xiang gave birth to a cub Sunday night.  Zoo staff report they can hear the cub, but have not seen it yet so far.

“We are thrilled that Mei Xiang had a successful pregnancy since 2005,” said Dennis Kelly, director at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo, in a press release.  “I’m cautiously optimistic as we haven’t seen the cub yet, but we know Mei is a good mother.  Like everyone else, I’m glued to the Panda Cam for my first glimpse of the cub.”

L’Shana Tova, For A Good Year 5773

http://www.jewfaq.org/holiday2.htm

Rosh Hashanah occurs on the first and second days of Tishri. In Hebrew, Rosh Hashanah means,  literally, “head of the year” or “first of the year.” Rosh Hashanah is commonly  known as the Jewish New Year. This name is somewhat deceptive, because there is  little similarity between Rosh Hashanah, one of the holiest days of the year,  and the American midnight drinking bash and daytime football game.

There is, however, one important similarity between the Jewish New Year and the  American one: Many Americans use the New Year as a time to plan a better life,  making “resolutions.” Likewise, the Jewish New Year is a time to begin  introspection, looking back at the mistakes of the past year and planning the  changes to make in the new year. More on this concept at Days of Awe.

For my family, I try to create an opportunity for all of us to remember the wonderful things we did this past year, and the things we did that, well, looking back, we should have made different choices.

We play a CD with the sound of the Shofar, a rams horn, that sounds the beginning of high holidays and begins the process of repentance.   I love this opportunity to really contemplate the past year.  The kids and I take croutons, throwing them into the pond, we “cast off our bad deeds”.

We pray G-d will forgive us, we pray to accept forgiveness from others, we remember to give to those in need.

Color me poor, according to Mitt Romney

Mitt Romney feels that middle income is a lot above my pay grade.  On Good Morning America, my self image as a middle class person sort of dissolved.

Richmond Times Dispatch:

Mitt Romney is promising to reduce taxes on middle-income Americans.

But how does he define “middle-income”? The Republican presidential nominee defined it as income of $200,000 to $250,000 a year.

Romney commented during an interview broadcast today on ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

The Census Bureau reported this week that the median household income — the midpoint for the nation — is just over $50,000.

We live in the 7th wealthiest county in the nation.  The median household income, according to the last census is $91,098. Notice the word household. that might imply more than one person earning that income.   I don’t think Mitt Romney understands me.  I thought I was doing ok for myself, especially being retired.  Now I think I am a loser.  I don’t have $200,000 coming in my house annually.  Maybe Mitt needs to do a little more studying of the American family if he wants to relate.

Does this alarm anyone else?

Middle East Crisis: escalating and spreading

I think there probably needs to be a place for general remarks about the middle east.

It seems that uprisings at American Embassies  are escalating all over north Africa and the Middle East.

The general thought by the protesters  is that President Obama should apologize to all of them (whoever “them” is) and burn the tape in front of them.  Common thought is that the US government somehow created the video.

That’s pretty difficult to fight….it’s sort of like responding to “when did you stop beating your wife?”

Ken Cuccinelli, the Quintessenial Bully of Women

I am unsure how the women in Virginia will now have access to legal and safe abortion. The reversal of  a previous ruling by the Virginia Board of Health, due to the bullying tactics our Attorney General, Ken Cuccinelli,  puts all LEGAL abortion clinics in an untenable position to operate.  Naral Virginia explains the consequences of the Boards actions.

On Friday, September 14, the Virginia Board of Health defied the recommendations  of legal and medical experts in voting 13-2 to subject existing women’s health  centers to burdensome buildings regulations. After months of pressure tactics by  Attorney General Cuccinelli, the Board reversed its earlier decision to  grandfather in existing clinics and exempt them from the medically unnecessary  regulations. If signed into law, these regulations will force up to twenty  women’s health centers in Virginia to shut down.

“We are stunned by today’s vote, and extremely disappointed in the thirteen  Board of Health members who decided to put political ideology before  evidence-based scientific fact,” said Tarina Keene, Executive Director of NARAL  Pro-Choice Virginia. “Hundreds of voices were silenced today.”

Heroes come home/ Friday in the Middle East

These are not the same videos.  Sorry.

The FBI will be sent to Libya to investigate the deaths of the assassinated Americans.  The State Department is viewing the events in Libya very differently from those at the other embassies in the region.  The Libyan incident appeared to be well orchestrated and not spontaneous.  It appeared to be a planned attack.   There is a strong possibility that Al Qada was involved in Libya.

It is thought that the spontaneous protests at other sites is a general protest to the idiot film.  Even a KFC was targeted by protesters.  Their reasons for being there simply don’t make sense.  Nothing anyone says matters.

Was the idiot movie a decoy?  Were we distracted while Al Qada did its work?  How hard would it be to get the average street thug wiling to throw a few rocks for their prophet?

Paul Ryan embeds with former terrorists?

These are NOT the same video.
[There are] … transcripts of a guy named Jerry Boykin, retired general and a guy named Frank Gaffney explaining their cockamamy conspiracy theory that Hillary Clinton had secretly rigged the Egyptian elections to favor the Muslim brotherhood. people in Egypt read that. They did not know the people who were talking were wing nut right wing conspiracy theorists.

Those same right wing nut jobs have also said that Anthony Weiner’s wife, was an instrument of the Muslim Brotherhood.  They also asserted that if the US passed any immigration reform, “we’d all be wearing ragheads.”  What do you expect from a group that says Roe vs. Wade is Sharia law?

You don’t have to go to the Middle East to hear crazy talk.

Meanwhile, after the series of blunders by Mitt Romney as he desperately tried to comment on foreign policy, the Republicans plop their appointed 2nd in command down in the middle of all this?

What were they thinking?  There aren’t that many stupid Americans and there isn’t enough tin foil.
