Huffington Post:

Apparently Old Moderate Mitt tried his best to escape from Make-over Mitt.  It didn’t last long:

Mitt Romney said Tuesday he has no plans to push for legislation limiting abortion, a softer stance from a candidate who has said he would “get rid of” funding for Planned Parenthood and appoint Supreme Court who would overturn Roe v. Wade.

“There’s no legislation with regards to abortion that I’m familiar with that would become part of my agenda,” the Republican presidential nominee told The Des Moines Register in an interview.

The Romney campaign walked back the remark within two hours of the Register posting its story. Spokeswoman Andrea Saul told the National Review Online’s Katrina Trinko that Romney “would of course support legislation aimed at providing greater protections for life.”

His statement could put him at odds with congressional Republicans who have made limiting abortion central to their messages. His own running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), has introduced bills to restrict access to abortion. And the Republican Party platform toughened its anti-abortion stance earlier this year.

Come on, Mitt.  You either plan to restrict reproductive rights or you wouldn’t.  Are you that desperate for votes that your would put on your old, discarded pro-choice face just to try to fool folks?  Reproductive rights really don’t play it both ways.

Someone got hold of Romney real fast because within 2 hours the pro-choice Mitt had been vanquished and a meaner, leaner more paternal Mitt had his saddle back on and he was being ridden hard by his anti-choice base.  It was sort of nice though, to see Old Moderate Mitt, even if it was just for a few hours.

I bet if those 5 Romney boys were 5 Romney girls, Old Mitt would be singing a different tune.  I would like to know what Ann REALLY thinks.   Laura Bush and Barbara Bush were both pro choice.

  1. Starryflights

Romney’s only core conviction is that he should be president. Only idiots would trust him.

  2. @Starry, if you want to vomit, go look up that congressional hearing dealing with Lybia. I have never seen such rudeness.

  3. SlowpokeRodriguez

Love watching the left gettin’ a little nervous! Back to women’s issues, huh? Well, that’s worked pretty good so far, go for it! BTW, only idiots trust ANY politician.

    1. Usually this is one area where politicians can be trusted–on choice. I guess they think women will hunt them down and kill them. Who knows.

  4. Second Alamo

Can’t wait for the Biden debate, and I thought SNL had some funny political skits!

  5. SlowpokeRodriguez

How does limiting funding for Planned Parenthood equal restrict abortion. Unless, of course, planned parenthood is little more than an abortion factory?

    1. I am sure Moderate Mitt has the answer. I would think the opposite would be true.

  6. kelly_3406

My ideal candidate is not in this race. This clearly shows that abortion legislation is not Romney’s top priority, which I agree with. But he was probably called on it by conservatives, which resulted in his waffling a bit.

However, this is highly preferable to Obama who does not waffle or hesitate at all when he tells Medevedev that he will be able to deal on missile defense after the election when he is no longer accountable to the electorate. There is no arguing with this video which shows that Obama plans to hide his true convictions and then sell out voters who favor missile defense.

This seems very duplicitous if not outright dishonest to me.

    1. That link doesnt work. I vaguely remember……….I don’t think we should be counting at this point. Romney would win the duplicitous race hands down.

Let’s face it, we will each vote for the policies we like best.

Republican behavior this past 4 years has influenced me almost as much as the candidates.

And Kerry was accused of being a flip flopper?!!!! Geez, how can anyone know where Romney stands on anything. He is the quintisential sales guy, tayloring the sales pitch to whomever is the audience.

  8. Elena

“waffling a bit”, come on Kelly, this guy isn’t a waffle. On one hand he’s a no compromise guy on immigration, next thing you know, he supports the DREAM act. I can’t even count how many times he has flip flopped on abortion. And taxes, he is cutting 20% for everyone, he isn’t cutting for everyone. He is spending money on a bunch of military stuff, but no explanation of how it is paid for. He isn’t ending medicare for everyone younger than 55 or he is going to create a voucher plan? He is gutting the new regulations on wall street or he isn’t?

  9. He really is the world’s worst on waffling. I actually understand why. He wants to be elected.

He also had to be all things to all people within his party and he had to cover up his moderate footprints.

    Trust him? NOT.

  10. @Second Alamo

Hi SA, who will you be rooting for?

What determines who wins? I still haven’t seen the benchmarks?

I think it goes back to who we like best to start with, except if you are that DB Chris Matthews.

Well, can I get a Starryflights “Biden’s gonna kick Ryan’s butt tonight”? I can’t enjoy the debate tonight without one.
Meanwhile, in Mass., Union members are being fined between $150-$250 for not showing up at Elizabeth Warren events. They deserve exactly what they get.

    1. Where did you see that about union members? I want to see it for myself before I comment.

  12. kelly_3406

    @Elena
I actually agree with you, Elena. I would prefer not to vote for a waffler, but Obama is a waffler also, and more importantly, an utter failure in just about every aspect of his performance. So alas, I am left with Romney.

My perfect candidate never materialized, but I do think that Romney’s business acumen and leadership can get the country back on the right track.

    https://www.weeklystandard.com/blogs/are-unions-fining-members-who-dont-support-warren_654203.html

    1. Thanks. I never saw the video. I don’t know anything about this weekly standard. Who are they?

I can’t imagine that this is true, on so many levels. What person would be stupid enough to belong to a union that fined them? How would the union get their hands on the money? I would think if that was the practice that the members would all gang up and fire the union–refuse to pay them, send up a mighty hallelujah F=You chorus and ditch them.

I do believe that unions would pay $50 for people to wear a shirt. That is different. I don’t have an opinion on that but I sure do on the fining.

If its true, those people need to get rid of that union, en masse.

  14. Elena

You know Kelly, I do feel for republicans. Your best guy, Hunstman, didn’t have a chance. Believe it or not, initially, Moon and I thought, if we have to have a republican, once Huntsman dropped out, we thought, ah, Romney seems pretty decent, he was a good govenor for Mass. But then, he morphed into an unrecognizable politican, one that bore no resemblence to his record or his platform as a moderate govenor.

He was so busy remaking himself as the uber conservative, all possible trust in him was lost. What DOES he stand for but getting elected. It’s like he’s a snake oil salesman, trying to peddle his wares, changing the ingredients of the oil, to appeal to whatever audience is listening.

Say what you will about not liking Obama’s policy, I understand that perspective, but I don’t see him as being inconsistent. He remains the same president, same policy he stood for, when he was elected. He got us out of Iraq, he has set a deadline for Afganastan, he pushed healthcare reform, he promised a stimulus to get people back to work, he hasn’t been able to deal with the debt, but he sure did get close with Beoner until the tea party fools crushed any possible chance of a real compromise.

Where do you thinkObama has altered his persona and policy since taking office?

    1. @Elena

You are right. Romney really did turn out to be a true shape shifter. He almost mutilated himself shape shifting for the religious right.

I guess I don’t see how he can please them and then come back and please the right of center people.

  15. Elena

    Slow,
How moronic first of all. These union members will vote for Brown as an EFF U to the Warren campaign. Second of all, why isn’t that illegal?

    1. Elena is right again. People aren’t that stupid. There isnt that much difference in Brown and Warren anyway. I wouold immediately vote for the other guy before I resigned from the union. If it was forced shop, I bet other people would be equally pissed and would just vote the union down. People run unions not vice versa.

Obama has waffled on numerous issues big and small. Candidate Obama was against the individual mandate in 2008 before President Obama pushed for it in 2009. Obama was against warrantless wiretapping as a candidate, but quietly left it in place after taking office. Obama’s position on gay marriage “evolved” from opposition to support. Before taking office, large deficits were unpatriotic, but now they are no big deal.

The biggest issue in my opinion is with Afghanistan, which candidate Obama referred to as the “good war.” But the Administration announced a timeline for withdrawal without regard to achieving U.S. war objectives. The timeline in effect created a very slow withdrawal, which means that Afghans no longer have reason to cooperate with us. The Taliban has taken advantage of this strategic error by stepping up attacks and infiltrating Afghan forces. The result has been that many troops have and will continue to die needlessly. The strategy should either be changed or troop withdrawal should begin immediately, but regardless, this waffling has been costly in blood and treasure.
