  2. U.S. Economy Grew at 2% Annual Rate in 3rd Quarter

    The United States economy grew at a annual rate of 2 percent in the third quarter, as more positive consumer activity and a healthier housing sector outweighed the effects of the drought, caution on the part of businesses and weaker exports.

    The new figure, released by the Commerce Department on Friday, is the government’s first estimate of growth in the third quarter. The economy grew at a 1.3 percent pace of growth in the second quarter of 2012, and by a 2 percent rate in the first quarter.

    Oh too funny!!

    How much of that money is left over from his Rule of Law Campaign that he set to test the waters?

    What becomes of that money?

    Please consider the long term impacts of Question 1 before you vote.

  5. Too late for 2 of us. How about Question 2? I voted No.

  6. Steve Randolph

    M-H-
    Virginia has absentee voting – it doesn’t have early voting.
    They are not the same thing.

    Early voters don’t have to fill out and sign a form giving a reason
    why they wouldn’t be able to vote on Nov. 6th. They just vote –
    no “excuse note” required.

    @Steve Randolph

    Steve, On Question 1, are you suggesting that we should allow the government to invoke the right of eminent domain in favor of a particular developer in order to minimize their costs and shift those costs to the taxpayer that would otherwise be required of the developer through the market. This is not about public access infrastructure.

    On Question 12, do you have any idea how often has this happened,such tat a constitutional amendment is required?

    1. What is this question 12? There are only 2 on the ballot.

  8. @Moon-howler
    If history is any evidence, this will be revised downward. Deeper analysis shows that some of this “growth” is due to a large influx of gov’t spending. Interesting timing.

    CEOs make the case for a grand bargain
    Posted by Suzy Khimm on October 25, 2012 at 1:44 pm

    Business leaders really don’t want Washington to go over the fiscal cliff.

    But the CEOs of the “Fix the Debt” campaign say they have a much bigger agenda: Their push is not just to head off the economic impact of the fiscal cliff but also to use the negotiations as a springboard for major deficit reduction that includes both tax increases and spending cuts.

    The group is pushing to replace fiscal cliff’s major austerity measures — averting the impact of taking more than $700 billion out of the economy in 2013 — with an alternative package that would reduce the deficit even more but that would take effect farther down the road.

    “This plan should be enacted now, but implemented gradually to protect the fragile economic recovery and to give Americans time to prepare for the changes in the federal budget,” the “Fix the Debt” campaign says in a statement supported by more than 80 chief executives, including the heads of Invesco, UPS and Aetna. Such a grand bargain “must be bipartisan,” the statement said.

    he group seeks to reform Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security and suggest comprehensive, rate-lowering, base-broadening tax reform. The group also advises that Simpson-Bowles recommendations serve as a framework for the plan. (Former White House chief of staff Erskine Bowles is a co-founder of the campaign.)

    Even businessmen support revenue increases to bring down our nation’s deficit.

    1. I am not sure what it was even about. I thought not going back to special sessions on a holiday. I voted NO.

    It’s just my two-year-old and me at home today because he had a fever yesterday. God help me, I’m about to go down for the 3rd time. I’d really like my wife to come home. She’s going to come home to find the two-year-old dancing on my corpse.

    1. Do you have a playpen? (translation: cage)

      Put him in it. He will eventually stop crying. It is the kindest thing to do.

  12. @SlowpokeRodriguez
    Bourbon is good for this. My mother swore by it. A little for you…a little for the kid…a little more for you… 😉

    It may not work.. but YOU feel better

  13. SlowpokeRodriguez

    It was so funny. We started off this morning singing and dancing, and by 5pm, I was like an overbred Chihuahua, just trembling and peeing uncontrollably.

  14. There stands slowpoke like a stone wall. Rally behind the chihauhaus.

    When you get older …the trembling happens a lot faster.

    I made mine stay in the playpen. Gkids too. They weren’t smart enough to be let loose. They all tried various ways to commit suicide…

  15. SlowpokeRodriguez

    Sorry, I got no place else to vent….my wife has zero sympathy 🙂

    @SlowpokeRodriguez

    Wait. You let your wife leave the house unescorted and without the baby??

    Was it something critical? Like you were out of sandwich meat? 🙂

  19. SlowpokeRodriguez

    @marinm
    Actually, I do the cooking in the house….not because I’m emasculated, but because it’s just safer and more satisfying for all involved if she doesn’t enter the kitchen. She told me her mother wants to cook this Thanksgiving because she wants it to be her last Thanksgiving cooking, and I said “why put it off a year?”
    Yeah, the wife had the 5 year old with her. He’s a walk in the park compared to the 2 year old. I cannot, to save my soul, understand how single mothers (or fathers) do it.

    1. I have never figured it out either, Slow. Even 1 kid and a single parent…makes me crazy.

      Your wife is smart. I no longer cook Thanksgiving either. I wish I had gotten smarter earlier also. It is exhausting and the sight of the food makes you sick by the time you sit down. Let those who like doing it do the cooking or eat out. I would gladly pay for everyone’s meal than to have to cook it.

      Does anyone know which eating establishments have Thanksgiving dinner? I want a change from the past 2 years.

    The Palm Court at Westfields Marriott puts on a brunch from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Right now they still have openings. We’ve been there for Mother’s day and it was packed – we try to book the week before or after for sanity’s sake. They’ve had a good selection and good service in the past. If I ventured out for Thanksgiving, I’d probably go there.

    The Liberia Ave Walmart parking lot looks like Black Friday today. I’m not going out again today, that’s for sure. Frankenstorm indeed!

    Why should it be?

    butterhead.

    1. I have no idea what that even means.

  23. SlowpokeRodriguez

    Well, the urban dictionary (of “shuck & jive” fame) gives a pretty good definition.

    1. I dont think that is a southern term of racial derision.

      If that is how it is used, then yes. It is racist.

  24. SlowpokeRodriguez

    Well, it’s not southern, but it’s a term of racial derision, that’s for sure!!

    1. Pokie, be truthful. Had you ever heard that expression before?

      I have never heard it.

  25. The Obama rally at Jiffy Lube Monday night has been cancelled.

  26. Starryflights

    Bet all them big gummint whiners will be he first to complain when the government does not respond quickly enough to all the power outages and stuff coming our way over the next several days.

  27. Emma

    @Starryflights Well, people do pay taxes for a reason, and expect that those taxes are used for SOMETHING, and that the government should be a good steward of that money. Or do you just want people to shut up and trust the government will always use taxpayer dollars honorably and in the best interest of the citizens? Why is it so hard for left wingers such as yourself to understand that the government is collecting and spending OUR money?

    1. Emma, if you can convince Prince William County of what you just said, we will make you an honorary citizen.

      They seem to forget it is our money and also that public information is …public.

    On November 6, 2012
    Manassas City voters will have an opportunity to decide if local
    elections will be moved from May to November. There are pros
    cons to doing it. No question more citizens vote in November,
    but local elections could easily be drowned out if they are moved and
    certainly would be far more expensive for the candidates.
    Mayor Parrish has a good letter in today’s News & Messenger
    sharing his case for keeping them in May.

  29. Steve Randolph

    More devils and witches than normal in Old Town
    Manassas yesterday morning. Center St. was closed to allow
    little folks in their costumes to enjoy activities and trick or treating
    from the City Hall parking lot to the Harris Pavilion.
    (One little boy in Scottish dress- kilt and all – was playing
    his minature bagpipe). Many of the merchants were also
    dressed for the occasion as they handed out goodies.
    It was an annual event that grows each year. Boo-ti-full.

  30. Come on PWC, cawll the schools. DC, Loudoun, Fairfax have closed. Don’t be a weiner-whiner. Just close. Announce early so parents can make other arrangements.

    @Starryflights

    The NY Times has not endorsed a Republican candidate for president since Eisenhower. An endorsement is meaningful only if a paper is willing to consider both parties. For example, the Des Moines Register endorsed Romney, which is the first time that it has endorsed a Republican presidential candidate in four decades. That’s an example of a news-worthy endorsement.

    Here’s the link to the mayor’s letter. I don’t agree. The turnout in May is too low. Still, it’s nice to read commentaries by the mayor and another by the new city school superintendent.

  37. @SlowpokeRodriguez
    Poor Tom Kaine…can’t get any respect. First he abandons Virginia to run the DNC, and now they can’t even remember his name……

    1. That must be why he is ahead in the polls. Poor Tom….errr…Tim.

  38. @kelly_3406

    Does the flip flopping on so many issues bother you?

    I think Congress will bend to Romney more so than Obama for several reasons. first, they will probably be the same party. Secondly….well…that old animosity that has been there on the part of congress since Obama was inaugurated. It won’t go away unless Obama comes back in another body with another name.

  39. marinm

    @Moon-howler

    If Romney wins does that mean the democrats go back to being against the wars?

  40. Pat.Herve

    If Romney wins, the House will vote for whatever unfunded spending he wants – the same players did it before (Boehner, Ryan, Cantor, etc).

    On another topic – why is there so much Presidential fund raising occurring overseas – Romney has raised funds in Hong Kong, London, Israel – Obama in China and Geneva.

    Rudy was the first candidate to solicit funds from overseas – from US Citizens and green card holders, of course. I guess they do an id check at the door.

    1. People are worried about being controlled economically by China? How soon before foreign countries are controlling our elections? they could technically manipulate the worst president in the world into office and over run us.

      Wait, didn’t President Obama suggest that during a State of the Union Address?

  41. Emma

    Bravo for the Sentinels. However, President Obama might want to take note of that pointy thing at the tip of the guard’s rifle.

    http://www.wtop.com/1211/3097920/Tomb-Sentinel-stands-in-face-of-Sandy

    1. I think he knows all about those pointy things. I think he will stand by the fact that with modern weaponry, we just don’t use as many.

  42. Ray Beverage

    Hunter’s Moon tonight! Unfortunately, we won’t be able to see it.

    1. I am reassured just knowing it is out there. Of course I am living in terror that a tree is going to come down on my house.

      That is some serious blowing out there.

  43. Pat.Herve

    so, the owners and crew of the Bounty, knowing full well that there is a major storm in their path – decide to try and sail through it. Bad things happen, and the ship is lost – but who is paying for their stupidity – we are. How much is the cost of the two C-130’s, 2 Choppers, and supporting staff to save these people – who knew full well what risk they were taking.

    Kudo’s to the Coast Guard team, but I feel that we are wasting their talent when we deploy them to save stupidity.

  44. SlowpokeRodriguez

    @Pat.Herve
    How very un-progressive of you to now want to pay for the stupid choices and actions of others. I’m going to tell your progressive masters.

  45. kelly_3406

    @Moon-howler

    Of course I am troubled by Romney’s flip flopping, but he was successful as a businessman, as a governor, and in leading the Olympics. I believe he can translate that executive experience into success in the White House. Plus, in my view, the other guy is no less of a flip flopper than Romney.

    Congress is not likely to be all that pliable for Romney either. While the House will probably be willing to work with Romney, I see no reason to believe that the democrat-controlled Senate will be cooperative.

    1. I dont think the far right will cooperate with him either, Kelly, should he win. (the jury is out on all of them in my opinion.)

      I don’t necessarily think businessmen make the best presidents.

      I am not sure that Romney would have any better luck than Obama. Both will hire smart people, the brightest and the best to try to.
