Hurricane Sandy and football were the news today. Now it is just Sandy.
Sandy is 1000 miles wide. that is almost unimaginable. She is stronger than Katrina but different. Katrina hit a below sea-level city directly with full force. Katrina was a Cat 5.
Sandy isn’t a Cat 5. She is barely a 2 but she is massive, large and covers a wide area.
We will keep this thread as an anything within reason goes thread.
What’s happening in your neighborhood?
I had a blonde moment. I kept getting email from friends reminding me to fill up the tub to store water. I almost did it…and then I asked myself why I was doing it. I have no idea. I am on “city water.” Is there something I don’t know. I never filled that tub.
Fill the tub, Moon. It won’t hurt. Be prepared for the worst.
Stock up on batteries and tp. Fill your cars with gas. Try to eat everything in your freezer first before the power goes out and the food is lost. Ensure you have enough pet food for three days at least. Blame Romney.
I was staying at my mother’s house during construction on my own when a hurricane came through. She lost her public water supply because the pumping station failed so I’d fill up the tub. If I had a septic pump, I’d keep the tank at a low level too in case the power failed and you had no generator.
Ah, ok. There IS a reason.
Got a flashlight, got the computer charged, the ipad charged, cell phone charged,
Why do I need that water, Starry? All the water in the world will be right out the door.
Why am I topping off the car with gas? Where am I going? I have a half tank.
I’d kick the thermostat up a couple degrees to build up a little more residual heat in the house. The nights are supposed to be cold and heat is lost even in well-insulated houses.
If you end up not needing the tub o’ water, the filled tank of gas, etc., you haven’t lost anything. If you need them, you have them. Okra’s is closed. Dr office near Costco closing at noon. City Public Works is offering sandbags to city residents in low lying areas if you need them. My daughter just left for her shift at Home Depot in Manassas. She packed an overnight bag to stay with us in Manassas rather than go home to Haymarket.
Also, if and when the power goes, so goes ATM machines and the cash registers if you use credit cards, so stock up on cash, just in case.
I’m still wondering how Starry can fill a bathtub with water and not drown.

From Prince William County:
Big question here….why isn’t Stonewall pet friendly?
One of my top 5 favorite songs!! I had to go back and read the newsweek article that inspired the song.
It is a great song, that’s for sure. I like almost everything Gordon Lightfoot touches.
Reporting in: City of Manassas, at least downtown area is without power, Haymarket is without. Moon and Chris have power. Mid-county is out at last report. Lots of flickering.
Censored? Reoirt in on power situation.
Cable went out in Stonington. Comcast. Fios seems fine.
Reports from around the area????
Cargo, what’s happening down Richmond way?
Marin, eastern end report?
200 trees down in the district
That is sad. I love trees. Did they uproot?
Hope this isn’t a doublet. Power went out for a couple hours. Comcast is iffy. I’m relying on Verizon.
daughter lost comcast but not power. Son in the City has no electricity.
Your power came back? @Censored
Are we going to get snow?
Yes. Power came on again last night. DH, doing the guy thing, had to crank up the generator in the interim.
The Gods of Electricity smiled upon us last night. However the FIOS install guy showed up, yanked our comcast out, put in FIOS boxes that didn’t work and left. He was one of their worthless CWA union guys. So our only problems were self-inflicted.
When is he returning? Did you get a commitment?
You should have made him put comcast back in before he left or tied him up so he couldn’t leave.
RE Gordon Lightfoot: He covered a song called “Pride of Man” that no one remembers. It was written by Bob (Hamilton) Camp. On 9/11 the song was in my head all day. I was surprised that no one at the networks synched up the lyrics with the devastation of that day. Lightfoot’s version is great. With all the damage in New York from the storm, it’s back in my head. I suspect one can find it on Youtube.
Beyond any one song, though, Lightfoot has to be one of the most prolific, high quality singer/songwriters of all time.
This Pride of Man?

I have never heard that song and I thought I had heard most Gordon Lightfoot. Thanks!
Has anyone ever heard of tim Buckley, in particular a song called Once I was?
Another CWA guy came this morning and fixed everything. I’ll take back what I said, it was the person, not the union. 150/65, sweet!!
You ought to be loving life soon.
I know someone else who switched out from comcast to Fios. He is a happy camper.
He lives on a street with a bird name. Must be a related issue?
I’m glad that all are safe. Richmond was spared the worst. We had some gusty wind and some rain.
I fared well. Electricity stayed put though Sprint cell service was hinky but they always are when it rains. Apartment management stocked me well with decorative sandbags (polka dots?), dug madly in the driving rain to create trenches that wicked the runoff from my patio to the storm drain
Welcome back.
I’ll not complain:) Though I am soooooo sad to see my loved, loved wild wood,NJ vacation site so beaten by Sandy. Happy though that my relatives in White Plains, West Nyack, LI, etc. came through the storm with relatively little damage other than fallen trees, a wrecked boat, and power outages. Looked at awesome pics today as to the flooding of bull run creek at Ben Lomond park. Wow.
Saw Chris Christie on the new tonight.
There was one shaken person! Made me change my opinion of him a bit
Houses turned into lumber; remains of 80-100 homes that burned down.
It’s unbelievable. Seen from a safe distance, it almost seems like a horror movie.
It is like it got nuked or earthquaked. Horrible.
I agree, it altered my opinion of Christie some.
For anyone who’s still having trouble getting around because of transit issues, there’s a couchsurfing-like service where you can find people willing to give you a ride in exchange for a few bucks to cover expenses: http://us.amovens.com/en. If you have a car, you can offer to help folks out for a small fee.
The pictures of New Jersey are just beyond what can be described. How will those poor people ever be able to pull their lives back together?
Is the REd cross the best place to donate?
I like the NJ lady that kept saying she was “rune’d” “I’m rune’d!!”
