Va. Health Commissioner resigns over new abortion clinic regulations

Washingtonpost.com:

RICHMOND — Virginia’s health commissioner abruptly stepped down Thursday over proposed new regulations that would require abortion facilities to meet strict, hospital-style building standards that many clinics say would put them out of business.

In her resignation letter, Karen Remley, a pediatrician first appointed by then-governor Timothy M. Kaine in 2008, said: “Unfortunately, how specific sections of the Virginia Code pertaining to the development and enforcement of these regulations have been and continue to be interpreted has created an environment in which my ability to fulfill my duties is compromised and in good faith I can no longer serve in my role.”

I doubt that the anti-choice right will be crying the blues over her resignation.  That frees up another spot for an extremist position.  The extremists will say and do anything to advance their agenda.

Dr. Karen Remley is to be commended for her personal integrity as well as her dedication to safe women’s health practices in Virginia.  She knows that the TRAP laws turning abortion clinics into mini hospitals are simply a ruse to make abortion more difficult, less accessible and more expensive.  She knows that Ken Cuccinelli acted unethically and perhaps illegally when he failed to certifiy the recommendation of the State Health Board.

We should all be worried when someone’s zealotry replaces the Rule of Law.

Secure Communities: Get the REAL Facts

Traveling about the blogosphere today, I have read more ignorant horse crap than I even knew existed.  Perhaps the worst is that Obama didn’t want to deport anyone so they could vote for him.  This absurdity, of course, overlooks the fact that illegal immigrants are NOT  citizens and therefore cannot vote.  Neither can green card holders.  Neither can legal residents.

My fellow bloggers are also not above attempting to scare their readers either.  What’s in it for them?  At this point, I am not sure.  Perhaps a trip down memory lane or a red circle memorabilia meeting?  Who knows.  Its probably an attempt to stir up more animus against the President also.  I figure those folks weren’t going to vote for him anyway.

At any rate, Secure Communities is an attempt to respond to the Arizona SB 1070 component that still allows probable cause.  In Prince William County, that hasn’t been an issue because all those arrested  were checked for immigration status, regardless of name, race, ethnicity.  Still, Secure Communities targets those illegal immigrants who real criminals–those who have broke serious laws and who put our communities at risk.  It does not target jay walkers.  Jay walkers waste everyone’s time.  No one has been deported for jay walking.

In a nation with many illegal immigrants and a finite number of ICE agents and federal judges, it only makes sense to use our resources wisely.  We want rid of the worst of the worst.  Please note, despite the lies told by some, Elena and I have always supported our 287(g) program.  We don’t want real criminals running around any more than you do.

Meanwhile, get the facts.  Other information may also be obtained from the ICE website.

From the  I.C.E website:.

Secure Communities: Get the Facts

FACT: ICE is focused on smart, effective immigration enforcement that prioritizes efforts to identify and  remove criminal aliens and others who pose a potential threat to public safety. Under this administration, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has prioritized the removal  of aliens who are in the  country illegally who have also broken criminal laws.

If Corey Stewarts Lips are Moving, He’s Lying…….

Insidenova.com:

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. —

Immigrations and Customs Enforcement is set to phase-out its 287(g) program and Prince William County chairman Corey A. Stewart, R-at large, isn’t happy about the development.

Under section 287(g) of Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act, local jurisdictions are allowed to enforce immigration laws by helping to arrest and eventually deport criminal illegal immigrants.

In 2007,  the Prince William board passed a resolution aimed at enforcing local illegal immigration laws after months of discussion with law enforcement,  the board and Prince William residents.

Stewart said the resolution helped county officials deport  more than 5,000 “criminal, illegal aliens” who were suspected “murder, rape, and other crimes.”

“I am personally  am convinced that this program is instrumental in that reduction in crime,” Stewart said. [bold print by author]

Stewart also credited  the resolution with contributing a  47.8% drop in violent crime.

“A recent action by the Obama administration is, in my view,  reprehensible,” Stewart said.

The number of lies Corey Stewart has told about the PWC immigration program is what is reprehensible.  Let’s start with the bold print.  Corey states that county officials deported more  than 5,000 illegal aliens.  First lies told right out of the gate.  County officials cannot deport anyone.  The only persons who can deport are federal judges.  5000 illegal aliens have probably been turned over to ICE through our MOA with 287(g).  However, the County does not know who, if anyone, was deported.  The DHS does not tell the county the disposition of those picked up.  This angered Stewart so badly he led the county to sue for the information.  Click here to  read about this lawsuit and further information on our 287(g) program.  To date, the information sought has not been released by the DHS.

Washington Post endorses Tim Kaine for U.S. Senate

Washington Post:

TWO FORMER Virginia governors, Timothy M. Kaine and George Allen, are running for the U.S. Senate seat that Mr. Allen fumbled away six years ago. They are partisan stalwarts who disagree on deficit reduction, energy policy, health care, abortion, the death penalty and much else. The contrast in character and intellect is even more stark. On those grounds, Mr. Kaine, a Democrat, is a better choice by leaps and bounds than Mr. Allen, a Republican.

The Foxies were totally desparate.  They even called in their Medical A team to accuse Biden of dementia.  Seriously.  Since when is remembering too much a bad side of dementia.

Let’s see what they do with tonight’s non-debate.

Candy Crowley will be the moderator.  The candidates will not be able to question each other per MOU between the campaigns.

Will pot go legal this election?

Huffingtonpost.com:

NEW YORK — Voters in three states will decide next month whether to legalize the sale and use of marijuana. If a ballot measure in one of those states succeeds, as supporters predict, it may create a rare truce in the war on drugs — and trigger a showdown with the federal government.

State-level legalization would climax decades of struggle by reformers to convince voters that marijuana presents less of a threat to public safety than legal drugs, including alcohol. It would also show that pro-pot activists have learned from previous losses, like California’s Proposition 19.

“There’s no doubt in my mind that at least one of them will pass,” said Dan Riffle, a legislative analyst for the Marijuana Policy Project.

His confidence appears justified. A September poll put support in Washington state at 57 percent. A Colorado poll out Monday from The Denver Post showed 48 percent in favor, versus 43 percent opposed. Support in Oregon was lagging.

Proponents have picked their battles. Legalization is only on the ballot in libertarian-leaning western states. Still-hostile state legislatures have been bypassed with ballot initiatives. And the presidential election will draw marijuana- friendly younger voters to polls.

Ugly racist remarks are alive and well

Huffingtonpost.com:

This is not the first time in recent weeks that racism has been directed towards President Barack Obama.

On Tuesday, The Huffington Post reported that “a spate of symbolic protests against [the president] that have featured empty chairs and racist imagery continued this week in California, with an arrangement featuring a noose, watermelons and a birther sign.”

Go back to Kenya you idiot,” read the sign that was reportedly set up along a remote road in Santa Clara County, Calif.

Am I surprised?  Yes and no.  I sure shouldn’t be since I have an,ex- friend who says worse than what’s printed on this shirt.  What does surprise me is that people are so emboldened to talk like this publicly.  For those of us who function in the workplace and in polite society, this kind of low class rudeness is shocking.  I forget that there are people out there like that, even though I know there are.  Some people simply don’t care and are proud of their rudeness.

Silver Lake Silver Lake Service, October 13th

Pete Candland has organized a committee to help make improvements to Silver Lake.  There will be general clean up, planting of flowers, fixing of benches, etc.

Lunch will be provided to volunteers.

I commend the citizens for taking their own time to help organize this clean up and general maintenance service day.  It is unfortunate that so little county tax payer dollars have been invested in this “jewel”.  I look forward to the day that citizens will not be responsible for the care and upkeep of their parks.

Bob Marshall screws the pooch–again

From NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia:

Del. Bob Marshall just doesn’t get it. Despite this past year’s backlash against his “personhood” bill and the now infamous forced ultrasound law, he is continuing his crusade against women’s health and rights.   Last week, the infamous anti-choice legislator pre-filed three anti-choice bills for the 2013 Virginia legislative session:

  • H.B.1314, H.B.1315 would allow your boss to refuse to cover birth control and sterilization procedures in your insurance plan based on their own personal beliefs. Bosses should not be able to decide which types of health-care coverage their employees should get.
  • H.B.1316 is one of the most deceptive bills we’ve seen. It exploits the issue of sex-selective abortion and pretends to support women’s rights. However, it penalizes doctors for failing to determine if sex is a factor in a woman’s decision to choose abortion.

Way to go, Taliban Bobby.  Didn’t you and your gang of oppressors inflict enough damage on to the governor last year?    Do Marshall and the rest of the  anti-choice zealots in the Virginia General Assembly realize that the governor is now know, nationally, as Governor Ultra-Sound?  We are the national laughing stock.

Why should anyone’s boss get to decide about what birth control someone uses or if your health insurance covers sterilization?

These are people who want the government out of your business?  I think not.   Bob Marshall has been an effen idiot since taking office.  Its time for him to SDASTFU.

The Great VP Debate: Biden vs Ryan

Tonight’s the night.  (in the words of Rod Stewart)

Starry predicts a huge arse kicking by Vice President Joe BFD Biden.   Marin, in the other corner, had to get clever on us and give us:

I think Biden’s going to do some ass kicking tonight.  Jabbin’ Joe needs to throw a 1% jab, a 47% cross, a faux war on women hook and end it off with a Big Bird uppercut!

No hedging out bets on all of that.  I think Marin might be pulling our leg.

I haven’t heard much about Ryan.  He isn’t Palin, which is a compliment.  He at least has substance. I just don’t like his budget policies or his stand on reproductive rights.  I believe that unless women can control their own reproduction, they have no finacial equality.

So, feel free to comment or not on the debate.  I make no promises about sticking with it.  I might just fade off to sleep.

Waffling Romney aborts previous abortion remarks 2 hours later

Huffington Post:

Apparently Old Moderate Mitt tried his best to escape from Make-over Mitt.  It didn’t last long:

Mitt Romney said Tuesday he has no plans to push for legislation limiting abortion, a softer stance from a candidate who has said he would “get rid of” funding for Planned Parenthood and appoint Supreme Court who would overturn Roe v. Wade.

“There’s no legislation with regards to abortion that I’m familiar with that would become part of my agenda,” the Republican presidential nominee told The Des Moines Register in an interview.

The Romney campaign walked back the remark within two hours of the Register posting its story. Spokeswoman Andrea Saul told the National Review Online’s Katrina Trinko that Romney “would of course support legislation aimed at providing greater protections for life.”

His statement could put him at odds with congressional Republicans who have made limiting abortion central to their messages. His own running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), has introduced bills to restrict access to abortion. And the Republican Party platform toughened its anti-abortion stance earlier this year.
