Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi and Billy Joel — who all hail from states that were hard hit by Hurricane Sandy — will headline a benefit concert supporting victims of the massive storm.

NBC has announced plans for Hurricane Sandy: Coming Together, a televised concert special to benefit the American Red Cross.

Long Island’s Joel and New Jersey sons Springsteen and Bon Jovi will be joined on the lineup by music stars like Christina Aguilera and Sting, comedian Jimmy Fallon and Today Show anchor Matt Lauer, who will host the event.

The telecast will air from New York’s Rockefeller Center at 8 p.m. ET Friday on NBC and its cable stations, including Bravo, CNBC and E! It will be broadcast on tape delay to the West Coast.

NBC sprang into action to host an hour long telethon for Sandy victims tonight.  The efforts will be lead by The Boss, Bruce Springsteen.

Washingtonpost.com:

NBC announced Thursday that it will air a one-hour celebrity-studded telethon at 8 p.m. Friday to raise money for the American Red Cross relief efforts for Sandy victims. The network also invited its commercial-broadcast brethren to lay down their November “sweep” plans that night and join in carrying “Hurricane Sandy: Coming Together.”

If I were a betting woman I would bet that the signature song of this event is going to be We Take Care of Our Own.

Springsteen is a Jersey boy by rights, having grown up in Freehold, New Jersey which is near the Jersey Shore.  Jon Bon Jovi is from Perth Amboy.

Meanwhile, Springsteen and Bon Jovi–does it gret any better than this?

  3. From the New York Times:
U.S. Military to Truck Fuel to Region Hit by Hurricane Sandy

As long lines persisted at gas stations in the New York metropolitan area, federal authorities moved Friday to restore supplies, turning to the Defense Department to deliver 24 million gallons of extra fuel to the region and lifting restrictions on deliveries by foreign-flagged ships.

With the reopening of the New York port to tankers on Thursday, and the return of a critical Northeast fuel pipeline to full capacity on Friday, the biggest outstanding problems are the lack of power at hundreds of gas stations and continued panic buying by the public, industry officials said.
As of Friday, according to AAA, only about 40 percent to 50 percent of the gasoline stations in New York City and New Jersey were operating, and even fewer on Long Island, most of them out of service because of power failures.

In conjunction with Friday’s move, the Pentagon was authorized by the Department of Energy and the White House to tap the Northeast Home Heating Oil Reserve.
