Today is Election Day.  After today all the robo calls will stop. The polls are open in Virginia from 6 am until 7 pm.

Lines are expected to be long. Supposedly the best time to go to the polls is between 10 and 4.

We have heard for the past 6 months that Prince William County is the county to watch.  We shall see if it was the predictor it was supposed to be.  Virginia certainly has been a battleground state. What is the price tag for that distinction?

2/3rds of workers report that they keep their politics to themselves in the work place.  They also say they feel a need for secrecy.   That sounds sort of nice, actually.

The City of Manassas has extra questions on it.  They will vote on moving their local election from May to November.

Let us know what you find at your polling place.  Are the lines long?  What was the mood of the voters?

Meanwhile, I don’t think this will be an election that gets called early.

91 Thoughts to “Open Thread…………………..Election Day……………November 6”

  1. Washington Post endorses President and Vice President

Barack Obama and Joseph R. Biden Jr. (D)

    and

    Tim Kaine for Senate (D)

  2. Pat.Herve

I think Obama will clench it. I think most people realize the severity of the situation when he came into office.

Yes, the recovery has been slow, and slower than anyone would expect, but Obama was able to stave off a depression and financial collapse. Housing seems to be stabilized and new housing starts is ticking up. Financial sector is stable and coming back in many areas. Manufacturing is stable and rising. The auto industry is stable – allowing many companies (other than GM and Chrysler) to stay in business and continue operating and supplying parts to others (Ford, Honda). Obama came into office with 800,000 job losses per month – now 150K increase per month. Our Natural Gas production is at record highs, our oil production is on track to out produce Saudi Arabia. Since day one in office, there has been a group of powerful individuals who have been working against him in many ways, to insure he is not voted in for a second term. We shall see if their tactics work.

I am better off than I was 4 years ago – my employment and employer are stable, my 401k has rebounded, my home equity is back, my mortgage rate was lowered through a refi, I have more disposable income. Yes, our economy is poised for tremendous growth with pent up demand waiting – no matter who wins, the economy is getting better.

  3. Thanks for such an up-beat summary, Pat.

  4. Second Alamo

“Washington Post endorses President and Vice President” Am I suppose to be surprised? No more than Fox supporting Romney.

    1. It doesn’t always work out that way with the WaPo.

  5. Forrest

I got to the polling place at Sinclair this morning a bit after 6:00 am, and there was already a long line down the hallway. It took me more than an hour to vote, and the line was getting a little bit longer. Some startled looks and a muttered expletive or two when people saw how long the line was, but generally good spirits.

    1. Thank you Forrest! I guess my daughter will be really pissed off if she has to endure that.

At least its over. Maybe we should have 2 election days and go to odd/even.

  6. Watching

I was at Mullen this AM and there was already a line at 5:30 AM. The line never got shorter when I was there, it just kept getting longer and longer. People said they had never seen Mullen with lines that long. Everyone was nice and pleasant and cold, and just kept waiting. Mullen tends to go 70/30 for Democrats. It appears the Democrats are showing up in PWC this year. Final numbers for the county should be interesting.

    1. That is great news! Maybe we are a bellwether county.

  7. Censored bybvbl

There was about a 15-20 minute wait at Coles around 10:30. The wait would probably have been half that if people would read the amendments before they get in line. Don’t know how the crowd broke down as far as party lines – it has a tendency to go both ways.

  8. The Boy Scouts are at the polls at Sudley. I have nothing against the BSA other than I don’t think solicitation is proper at the polls, on public property.

What happens when those laRouche jerks show up and start harassing people. How do we draw the line?

How about they not be there?

  9. IVAN

About a 10 minute wait in Manassas this morning. People were coming in at a steady pace. It would have been faster if voters would have familiarized themselves with the ballot initiatives.

  10. Starryflights

Today is the day Mitt Romney gets his butt kicked by Barack Obama! Yeah!

  11. punchak

What were Boy Scouts doing there?
If for observing = OK, but nothing else.

    1. Selling crap. Popcorn mainly.

      re Boy Scouts

I dont think they should be there. I dont think anyone should be selling anything at the polls.

  12. MSNBC at Okras at 3:15. I saw Mr. Howler’s nose in the video of the Obama headquarters.

  13. Mr. Howler is putting in time for Obama and for Tim Kaine today. I am really proud of him for giving candidates that much of his time.

Some woman came to the house for my daughter. Get out that vote!!! I thought she was going to take me. Dear God.

  14. There have been about 1100 people voting at my polling station according to one poll volunteer. He said that activity is higher than ever before. He’s never seen it this busy.

  15. Starry, you are going to bring on bad Karma. Don’t jinx us now!!!!

  16. Our very own George Harris is giving rides to the polls if anyone needs a ride.

@Cargo, any idea of their party stripe?

  17. Nope. Well, probably GOP. I live in western Henrico, Cantor’s district.

    1. Ewwww. I didnt know that. Have you thought about moving?

I can’t remember my congressman’s name. Not sure he even is yet.

  18. Just heard it on the news!!!!

Polling has backed up SO MUCH, that like the “odd-even” gas rationing in New Jersey, Virginia is going to “ration” voting. Today…all the Republicans vote. Tomorrow…..all the Democrats….

    👿 😈 😉

    1. The Democratic God is going to get you, CArgo.

  19. Steve Randolph

    When will we know?

“One of the first things I’ll look at are the margins of victory in
the northern Virginia suburbs, especially Prince William County.”

    John King

    1. Did you see MSNBC around at Okras?

  20. Depending upon where you go on the net, you get different answers on which states have gone for whom. I don’t know how Politico can “call” a state for a candidate only 19 minutes after the polls have closed. They called Maine for Obama. The polls closed at 8. 0% reports in.

Yes, I know that its probably going to Obama. But that’s not reporting. That’s guessing.

I’m not going to watch or look for any results until around ten.

  21. Steve Randolph

    http://electionresults.virginia.gov/

Not all precincts are in but it appears:
    – Obama won Manassas City and Manassas Park.
    – Romney carried PWC and looks ahead statewide.
    – Citizens voted to move Manassas municipal elections to November.

  22. Starryflights

We just picked up two senate seats. Tea Party fave Scott Brown just got his butt tossed out in Mass by Elizabeth Brown. Donnelly wins Indiana over that legit rape idiot. Yeah baby!

  23. Granddaughter just called her grandfather to tell him all his efforts had paid off.

Kaine has been declared the winner!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  24. I just saw Nettie on MSNBC.

  25. TWINAD

Allen concedes! I went after work and waited about 1 hour 45 minutes. I have never stood in such a long line in my life! I actually thought it would be a 2 or 2 1/2 hour wait. Only 4 machines…

  26. CBS, MSNBC, ABC just called the election. 4 more Years for Obama!!!

    Fox News agrees even.

    Ohio pushed it over.

  27. Twinad, where were there only 4 machines? Incredibly stupid for a presidential race.

  28. Steve Randolph

From checking the state site, it appears the most
outstanding precincts at this hour are about 25 each
in PWC and Fairfax County plus 50 in Democratic vote rich
Norfolk City. (Have to wonder if someone is holding back the
totals down there so Norfolk might get the credit for Obama
winning Virginia and The White House a second time?)

  29. TWINAD

At Gainesville Middle…there were 5, but one was broken for the majority of the day a poll worker told me. That place was packed…very odd…I drove by an elementary polling place closer to my home than Gainesville Middle, with hardly any cars…then I got to GM and it was a ridiculously long line! I voted for Obama 4 years ago in Manassas in about 15 minutes.

  30. I’m calling the election for Obama and Virginia, barring any recounts for Obama in Virginia.

The votes for the Constitution party and the Libertarian party were enough to take away the win for Romney in Virginia.

For Romney to tie, he would need Florida, Iowa, Nevada, AND Virginia. With Fairfax still coming in…and Obama ahead… Obama takes it.

  31. @TWINAD

You all need to raise hell with whoever is in charge of that. Geez. They had people still voting at 10 pm on the other side of the county.

  32. @Cargo, there are a bunch of precincts not in yet for PWC. All of those precincts seem to be D rich ones at the other end of the county.

I just checked it. The R precincts are over here in the western end. My own precinct turned blue but in fairness, it also got redrawn.

I know one blogger who is going to be crying his heart out over it. (not me)

  33. Well, you won. Congratulations.

I REALLY hope that YOU are right and that Obama is NOT the incompetent, corrupt boob that he’s proven to be the last four years.

I’m am truly praying for that.

I fear is that he won’t be. That he will be WORSE without an election hanging over his head.

  34. And no. I don’t hate Obama. That would be like hating a scorpion for stinging me.

I’m just disappointed because I actually thought, against all evidence, that Americans were smarter than this.

  35. From Elena and Moon:

Sorry we are so stupid. Perhaps you and your political peers need to understand that backwards conservatism is never going to win on a national level.

We were preparing something nice to say about Gov. Romney who deserves a lot of credit. Remarks like what you just said really detract from the class he is showing.

  36. My remarks have no bearing on him. He’s classier than I am.

And its statements like “backwards conservatism” when applied to a moderate like Romney that shows your true colors.

Thank you for any kind remarks about Romney.

But, unlike you, I am deeply, deeply fearful about what this nation has become and what will happen to it under Obama’s unconstitutional actions. I truly believe that this country is allowing itself to fail because it wants free stuff. I truly believe that those of you that vote solely on the abortion issue are allowing the Progressives to use that fear to pull this country leftwards and downwards into a regulatory and socialistic morass. All it takes is for the press to yell, “He’s pro-life” and you’ll follow anyone, no matter how dishonest.

Congratulations. Now EVERYTHING will be Obama’s responsibility. With a do nothing, rubber stamp Senate, no compromises will be reached. Reid will continue to lie. The Senate will continue to refuse to do its job and present a budget or consider House bills.

America has chosen to be socialist. Congratulations. With 99 judgeships open, we’ll be having this unicorn dream for a long, long time.

    1. “Backwards conservatism” was not meant to describe Mitt Romney. I was speaking of you.

Perhaps I need to remind you that I supported Romney during the primary much more than many Republicans did.

I wanted 2 real choices when I went to the polls. Unfortunately, he had to try to be too many things to too many people in the GOP.

I suppose those with weak egos don’t go that far in politics.

As for your fears, I watched people fear the future a great deal while I was growing up. That feeling was prevalent in the south and probably had its roots of fear well grounded in Reconstruction. I think we will all be fine. We are Americans.

  37. Starryflights

Thomas Jefferson once said he does not fear the people, Cargo.

The American people have decided that they do not want to return to the failed policies of the 2000s that sent our economy into the dump. They want to continue improving our economy under the current president’s stewardship.

And women have decided that they will not allow their civil liberties to be removed.

Today was a great day for our nation, for our beloved state, and for the American people.

  38. Let me also add that calling the President of the United States a scorpion on this blog, regardless of who it is, is unacceptable. Calling the people who voted for Obama stupid is also rude and unacceptable.

The election is over. Let’s put election racor behind us. All of us have friends of a different party. Those people are still our friends. I plan on reconnecting with some of my friends of opposite political persuassion in the very near future.

Meanwhile, Manassas City is blue, Manassas Park is blue, and Prince William County is blue. (I just live on the red end of it) Last but not least, Virginia is blue. Not everywhere, but at the end of the day, it is blue.

  39. One, you are putting words in my mouth, again. Go read it again. I did not call the President a scorpion. I said that hating him for his actions would be like hating a scorpion for stinging me. It’s his nature to be a socialist.

But, you are right. I can’t guarantee the below, but I will try.

I hereby try to give up all resistance to his policies. I want every single one of them enacted to their fullest extent. Tax and spend. Regulate. Restrict businesses. Confiscate wealth.

I will try to no longer point out where his policies will hurt America. America has chosen. I advocate that the House vote present. Let him and the Democrat have it all their way.

America deserves what it gets. It voted for it.

    1. I am not going to argue with you. I can read and I know how to transfer meanings ….it was clear as was the insult.

  40. Some interesting statistics:

Virginia is blue by 94,000 votes. Obama 50.5% Romney 47.9%

    Manassas City is blue
    Manassas Park is blue
Prince William County is blue by 15 points. Obama 90,676 56.6% Romney 67,197 41.95%

Most of the precincts that went with Obama are on the eastern end of the county. My own precinct is now blue as are some other in the region. Gainesville, Haymarket and Bristow remain red.

I was surprised to find out just how blue PWC really is.

  41. punchak

Cargosquid :And no. I don’t hate Obama. That would be like hating a scorpion for stinging me.
I’m just disappointed because I actually thought, against all evidence, that Americans were smarter than this.

The millionaires and secret PACs weren’t able to buy the White House.
Billy Graham’s full page ads didn’t do it either.

  42. Starryflights

“I never considered a difference of opinion in politics, in religion, in philosophy, as cause for withdrawing from a friend.”

  43. Second Alamo

Obama: You’ve got your revenge, now accomplish what you’ve promised. You missed the boat in the first four. Try spending more time in the white house and less time in front of the camera. No excuses this time around! Just shut up and do it.

    1. SA, he missed YOUR boat. He did it on purpose. He was waiting for the rest of us…the American boat.

There were no excuses. He didn’t elect himself. We elected him.

  44. middleman

    Man, talk about sour grapes! If Romney had won, I would have graciously congratulated Alamo, Cargo and the rest and promised to fully support Romney/Ryan in their quest to return us to the 1950’s ;-}

Fox News is still insisting that Romney won…

    1. The 50’s really were a bleak time in so many ways.

  45. Lyssa

    Cargosquid :
And no. I don’t hate Obama. That would be like hating a scorpion for stinging me.
I’m just disappointed because I actually thought, against all evidence, that Americans were smarter than this.

I think Americans are nicer than you realize.

  46. Lyssa

Rove really melted down. Maybe he feared being hauled on the Koch Bros carpet. As I read ‘the linen is being set at the table in the chalet where they’ll plot their revenge’. Will Rove be dismissed for not pulling this off?

Koch Bros were the biggest losers last night. They are scary.

  47. @punchak
Of course they did. Obama’s PACs did. Yay!

  48. Pat.Herve

Karl Rove made my night. He was a crying wining little boy. What I thought was even funnier, is when Fox News went into the Decision Room – and pretended it was unscripted – yet, on the way down Megan Kelly talked about how she lost her communications while “practicing during rehersal” – so that whole Decision Room antic was staged.

I think Romney was shell shocked – he really thought he was going to walk away with this. I really believe he did not have a concession speech written before he needed it. Romney was gracious in his concession speech.

    1. It was too his credit that he just turned back into a nice man.

Fox news was Disgusting! I watched them for a while and then I couldn’t stand it any more.

  49. Second Alamo

I personally enjoyed the 50’s. No drive by shootings. No fear of letting your child out of your sight. A nation of people who loved their country. Being allowed to defend your family members when wronged. TV shows that focused on things other than someone trying to murder someone else. It was a very very positive time to be an American. Today is nothing but a constant barrage of cynical people berating one group or another, as if constantly on the edge of civil war. Our presidents spoke admiringly about the country, and you had no doubt that they were sincere. Support for our military was without doubt.

Yes, I do yearn for the 50’s.

    1. @SA,

All those black children were in their own schools and we could practice diving under our desks in case of nuclear attack.

Additionally, girls who got pregnant could get sent away to have a baby they had to give away. I remember that happening to a few of my neighbors.

Sputnik was cool though. So were wax teeth.

i don’t think people loved their country any more then than they do now. They were taught certain protocols which I have defended on this blog. However, I was strongly argued with by people who perceive themselves as good Americans. I think people had better manners in the 50s’

There were perverts. We just didn’t hear much about them.
