Today is Election Day.  After today all the robo calls will stop. The polls are open in Virginia from 6 am until 7 pm.

Lines are expected to be long. Supposedly the best time to go to the polls is between 10 and 4.

We have heard for the past 6 months that Prince William County is the county to watch.  We shall see if it was the predictor it was supposed to be.  Virginia certainly has been a battleground state. What is the price tag for that distinction?

2/3rds of workers report that they keep their politics to themselves in the work place.  They also say they feel a need for secrecy.   That sounds sort of nice, actually.

The City of Manassas has extra questions on it.  They will vote on moving their local election from May to November.

Let us know what you find at your polling place.  Are the lines long?  What was the mood of the voters?

Meanwhile, I don’t think this will be an election that gets called early.

91 Thoughts to “Open Thread…………………..Election Day……………November 6”

Moon, I think we need a seperate election thread, there’s alot to discuss. BTW, “The Black Guy Won the Election” and is president for four more years. That’s for anyone still in denial.

    WHAT A GLORIOUS DAY!!!!

  2. Starryflights

@Second Alamo The last four years were the hard part. The wars are over and the economy is recovering. The Repugs have been humbled and rejected. While major problems remain, we have a steady hand on the till. From here on in, it’s smooth sailing and blue skies ahead!

  3. Lyssa

No child abuse laws, under God not in the pledge, women defined as chattel in some states and oh yeah, Jim Crow laws made life so simple. Plenty of kids were abducted and abused, drive by shootings only occurred in Las Vegas, NYC and North Jersey and Chicago or wherever the mob operated. The homicide rate per 1000 in 1950 was 4.6 and was 5.6 in 2005.

There were plenty of good things in the fifties, but a lot was swept under the rug and appearances became a reality that couldnt sustain as a practice.

    1. Excellent, Lyssa. Thanks for the FACTS.

  4. Starryflights

And hey, at least Paul Ryan didn’t have to resign his seat, bwahaha!

Yeah, the Fifties were good for naive middle class white children who could play outside pretending they were Davy Crockett or Superman or bake a little dessert in their Easy Bake Ovens. For females or minorities many of the every day tasks of life weren’t such fun. They probably shed more than a few Tiny Tears as they grew up.

    1. Very good, Censored! I am impressed!

  6. Anyone else realize that Puerto Rico just changed governors AND voted in favor of Statehood? Irony? It was the Previous governor that favored statehood.

I’ve seen an awful lot of whining on conservative blogs about how people voted for Obama in order to free-load. As long as that clueless mentality and dog-whistle call out to racism remains, the Republicans will remain a minority. Does paying into Social Security for 40 years before collecting it constitute free-loading? Does having a six-figure income and college degree and pension constitute free-loading? Does being a recent graduate with business skills and speedy promotions constitute free-loading? Does being a teacher with two children in public school and a husband employed by an IT firm constitute free-loading? Gee…it must pi$$ a lot of Republicans off that these folks that I know are white, voted Democratic, and probably the voters that the Republicans would love to recruit but they’re turned off by the message.

If the Republicans wish to remain a viable party they’re going to have to throw Lee Atwater’s tactics in the trash where they belong and look at this nation’s demographics. People are tired of being the boogeyman. Skip the fear-mongering and concentrate on an appealing message to the larger population.

    1. Bill O’Reilly was talking about people who just want free stuff…especially young people. then I heard “entitlements.”

I talked back to the TV when I heard it. Really its older people who want free stuff. Free stuff like stuff they worked hard for all their lives and have come to expect…you know like mediCARE and social security.

I am tired of some blow hard coming along and acting like people who are looking forward to these “entitlements” are lazy and have their hands out. It burns me up and makes me want to just walk up and punch them in the nose.

The Repubs will change into coprolites if they don’t change and realize that the old demographis are no longer valid. The country today isn’t like it was even only four years ago. Larry Sabato, on tonight’s O’Reilly program, tried to tell the for ever interrupting O.
about it. Even the “great” Dick Morris was talking about it.
They are becoming the party of old, rich guys/gals.

  9. You guys are right!

The Democrats aren’t in the habit of promising ever increasing amounts of government aid. That’s a GOP myth! And the new demographics aren’t interested in the GOP platform of basic conservative principles. The GOP has to understand that it has to cater to the demands of each group if they want to get elected. The GOP will just have to learn how to imitate the success of the Democrat party. They have to become Democrat – lite. Otherwise, no Republicans will get elected ever again! Evidence shows that! I say that they just need to stop resisting and just keep pouring money into the government programs.

    1. Stop it. You are being a pain in the ass with your mock obsequiousness.

You know, no one is rubbing it in your face. Either carry on a serious discussion don’t say anything.

  10. The credit agencies Fitch and Moody have stated that they will downgrade us again unless we fix the deficit.

Time to let those Bush era tax cuts expire and cut the budget! Do it now! We have to raise the taxes and the debt ceiling. In fact, lets just get rid of the ceiling. What good does it do? Why have it?

In fact, we need to return to the 60’s tax code! 90% on rich people’s highest brackets. It worked then…. sounds fair.

    1. Cargo, calm down. The worst time to implement draconian measures is during a recession or recovery from a recession.
The defit didn’t happen overnight. It won’t vanish overnight.

I dont know about you but I don’t plan to live like I live in a third world country just so the tea party isnt wetting its pants.

  11. clueless

The tea party and their veiled racism are on their last legs. I have voted for both parties in the past but cannot see a way to vote Republican again until Rove, the Koch brothers and the no tax idiot Grover fall by the wayside. I like our Governor but he and any other moderate Republican will not have a chance until they repudiate the extremists.

    1. Clueless, I am inclined to agree with you. I am not all that happy with McDonnell over the women’s issues. However, I also think his state party left him in a lurch and backed him in a corner. They killed his chances for national office because of, once again, extremism.

I think the Republicans need to throw out the clown and regroup. You never know who might land there. I used to be an R.

  12. Starryflights

Had Romney chosen Christie for his Veep, he would probably be celebrating today.

  13. @Moon-howler
What are you talking about? I’m just going along with the plan as supported by President Obama. Its the budget sequester agreed to by Congress and the President.

And since the rich need to pay more…. we need to start looking at loopholes.

I say that one thing would be to restore the 20 percent excise tax on motion picture theater gross revenues that existed between the end of World War II and its repeal in the mid-1950s. It was there to pay down the debt. Repeal the Hollywood tax cuts.

Second: Another valuable proposal would limit the ability of tax-exempt organizations to escape scrutiny and hoard funds. Congress might require them to spend at least 10 percent of their endowment each year, with no wiggle room. Why should rich people be able to go on influencing the culture, tax-free, for decades after they die?

Limits on the charitable deduction might be worth considering: Perhaps a $50 million lifetime limit, which should surely be enough for anyone; perhaps a $1 million to $5 million annual limit. Why should fatcats like Warren Buffett be able to get millions in tax deductions that average Americans can’t?

Limiting the pay of nonprofit leaders (including university presidents and foundation heads) to no more than the pay of a member of Congress or a Supreme Court justice might also be worthwhile. Who needs to make more money than that, especially when it’s coming from tax-deductible sources? At some point, you’ve made enough money, as a great man once said.

Beyond this, for truly serious tax increases, Republicans could propose capping the mortgage interest deduction so that houses worth more than $250,000 are ineligible.

We have to get creative with that taxes. Spending cuts will hurt people. We need to keep investing in the country.

    1. Those are some interesting ideas. Given the cost of houses in our area, I would not even consider that price for houses. Up here that gets you a rather small house. I might agree with a million dollar mortgage as a ceiling.

I actually like your idea about the non -profits but not such a low salary. Most people give up money to serve the public. Go higher and I might agree with you, even though I am not sure you can pull it off.

Movies cost too much as it is. How about home dvds? where would that fit in?

  14. I’m thinking that the tax should actually come from, not the theaters now, because the movie industry has changed, but from the movie makers.

  15. I’m thinking that the tax should actually come from, not the theaters now, because the movie industry has changed, but from the movie makers.

As for the houses, we must not restrict the taxation base. If one can afford a $250,000 house, why do you need a tax break on anything over that? I’m just using a similar number to the President’s income number.

THE COMING TAX INCREASES – A COMPARISON
    Current January 2013
    Conventional Short-Term 35.0% 43.4%
    Conventional Long-Term 15.0% 23.8%
    AMT Short-Term 28.0% 31.8%
    AMT Long-Term 15.0% 23.8%

I’m stoked! We’re going to fix that deficit. Of course, I don’t pay any income taxes since I don’t have an income. And hey, I just realized something. Since I’m unemployed, maybe I can go get some unemployment insurance. My principles won’t stand in the way. 99 weeks… I wonder if I’m still eligible. Of course, I’m not actually looking for a job at the moment. I’ve given up and just making do.

  17. middleman

I’m so glad to see Cargo has seen the light. I know he’s not just being facetious picking on what he thinks are liberal groups like the movie industry and non-profits to tax. This is the kind of across-the-aisle, Americans working together thinking that will really move the country forward…

  18. clueless

Cargo, great ideas. can you make the mortgage interest deduction more like $399,000? I would really appreciate it.

  19. @middleman
The funny thing is that I advocated lower tax rates and a broader tax base before. Now…since the rich people seem to have voted for Obama….let them have their wish.

    @clueless
Nope…sorry. Everyone has to pay their fair share.
