The north east gets slammed by another storm–this time a nor’easter.  Give it a rest, Mother Nature.

How much more can the east coast take?  Once again, the D.C. area dodged a bullet.

More election post-mortem goes on.  What advice do you have for the Republican Party?

Is the  brand  broken?  Is there a Republican message problem?

93 Thoughts to “Open Thread…………………………………..Thursday, November 8”

  1. What were the Democrats doing while Republicans were crying conspiracy, whining about mainstream media, and doing a hate-on at Chris Christie for acting like a gracious adult?

They were sending volunteers out to people’s houses to find those who had not voted to see if they needed a ride to the polls.

I had to convince some very enthusiastic Dem volunteer that I was not named Laura and that indeed I had voted.

No one believed me when I said the Dems came to get my daughter to drag her screaming and kicking to the polls. Elena thought I was making a joke. It was true!!!!!!!

Well that is a little hyperbole. She was at work and headed to the polls in the afternoon. She didn’t scream and kick. She went willingly.

  2. I absolutely agree. Yet another thing for the Republicans to emulate. When will they see the light? Conspiracy? Meh. The press is completely unbiased and even handed. If Obama had lost, the press would have been the first to congratulate Mitt on doing a fine job with smiles on.

    1. Victim mentality serves no purpose. What you ought to be looking at is why Independents gravitate to the democrats rather than the republicans.

Most people on this blog are Independents, not Democrats.

  3. Here’s how you get people to vote your way. Glenn Beck mentioned this over a year ago when the questions about changing the Puerto Rico status. Puerto Rico had the referendum on changing their status. It followed exactly as he said. A commenter on another site explains it better.
    __________________________________

This was a two stage vote for a reason.

A majority of Puerto Ricans do NOT want to become a state. Every referendum, every poll, where there is a clear choice of maintaining their current status vs becoming a state, they always choose to maintain their current status.

Here’s what happened: Polls over the years have consistently shown that a strong minority want to maintain current status, a slightly smaller minority wants to become a state while a still smaller minority want full independence. Someone figured out that those last two together form a slight majority.

So, they rigged a two-tiered vote process. The first question asked only if they wanted to maintain current status or change to a new status, without specifying what that status would be. They did this to get people that want full independence to vote the same way as people that want to become a state. 54% did so. Then, with that question supposedly settled, the second question was: what do you want that new status to be: independence vs statehood. So, if they can no longer maintain current status, 2/3 prefer statehood, 1/3 prefer full independence.

Its BS. They rigged the game. The real question is: maintain current status vs statehood. That’s a clear victory for maintaining current status.

The whole thing is being run by DC Democrats. They want 2 more D Senators and 6 or 7 more D Congressmen plus 8 or 9 more EV votes for President.

    ___________________________________________

    BRILLIANT!

…A young voter in the capital San Juan, Jerome Lefebre, said: “Puerto Rico has to be a state. There is no other option.

“We’re doing okay, but we could do better. We would receive more benefits, a lot more financial help.”

I, for one, welcome them into statehood, if they want it. We can afford to send them more money.

  4. @Moon-howler
Romney had the majority of independents according to the exit polls. What he was missing was 10 million Republicans.

And while most people on this blog proclaim themselves to be Independents, not Democrats, they voted for the Democrats. I’ve decided that its best to join the club and support the Obama agenda. 60 million people can’t be wrong.
I’m just going along with his statements and plans.

He wants to cut the deficit. He helped with the sequester. His plans have the tax raises. I say, let’s do it and get it over with. The sooner the better. Why drag it out? Fiscal cliff? Not so much, because if it was a “cliff” Congress would not have set it up this way, right? Everyone wanted this to happen. It was the sensible thing to do.

So…ok. Let it happen. We have to stop kicking the can down the road. And, apparently, most of America is just fine with Obama’s plans. So, let’s get it done. The Republicans should just vote “present” and let them be implemented. I mean, why not? Nothing in those plans is going to hurt the country. All that revenue to add to the investment spending coming from DC is going to do great things. I’m sure of it.

    1. @Cargo

I simply do not believe the exit polls. Who are they calling Independents?

What Romney was missing were women, young people and Latinos.

The Republican party has been threatening to both women and Latinos.

You are saying if you vote for a candidate you belong to that party. Bull snort.

This is Virginia. I wasn’t a Republican from August 2011 until Nov. 2011.

The job cuts have already begun.

Thank you tea party for stonewalling rather than compromising.

  5. Starryflights

The republicans could also use support from African Americans.

The American people voted for responsible government, not “free stuff.”

Boehnor has agreed to new revenues, finally. A

    1. That ‘free stuff’ is so offensive. It simply makes me sick and I have lost all respect for Bill O’Reilly saying something like that.

Some people everywhere want free stuff. To associate the acquisition of “free stuff’ to voting for President Obama is simply unacceptable.

  6. Since the Left was unwilling to compromise with the Tea Party…hey…both can play.

But NOW, since the people have spoken….let the sequestration begin. As I said….the GOP should just vote present on everything and let Obama’s policies run. That’s what the people want, obviously. 60 million Democrats and 12 million missing Republicans allowed President Obama to be re-elected. So, let’s enact all his policies.

I’m serious. I have absolutely no problem with it. Since the Republicans will have infighting with the Tea Party in the House, and people like yourself will never hold the Democrats responsible, since “compromise” always means “agree with the Democrats”…we should just not fight it. Between the partisan press and the partisan supporters… let it all go. Voting “present” allows the Democrats to have full responsibility. They get all the credit.

    1. I have a huge problem with it, Cargo. So does every other person in Northern Virginia if they have a brain.

The Tea Party was and is way out of step with modern America. Their candidates brought this country to a near financial disaster.

They are done and so is Grover Norquist. Those candidates had their chance to fix things. They didn’t. I guess they didn’t have the magic bullet either.

Funniest thing about silver bullets. They don’t do you much good against a near fianancial depression.

  7. @Moon-howler
Do you know WHY he and the Democrats are associated with “free stuff?”

    1. I know they shouldn’t be.

So tell me who you think is getting free stuff.

If you say ME i will drive to Richmond to punch your nose. 👿

  8. “The Tea Party was and is way out of step with modern America. Their candidates brought this country to a near financial disaster.”

Then how do you explain the 2010 successes and the current statements by Fitch and Moody about our credit rating…and nary a Tea Party statement in sight?

Again, please, tell me the procedure under which they were supposed to have fixed things?

Personally, I think that they all need to step back now and vote “present.” The people have spoken. They want more spending. So, lets eliminate the debt ceiling and enact Obama’s budget…oh. Wait. The Senate keeps killing that. Let’s enact the Sena..wait, they don’t have one….The HOUSE budg…dead on arrival in the Senate, not even put into committee…so I guess we should just vote “present” on the omnibus spending bills and continuing resolutions.

I say enact those taxes. We need the money to spend our way into prosperity!

    1. The debt ceiling is there for a reason.

Cargo, you and I will never agree about the teaparty. You love them I hate them.

The 2010 ‘successes’ were a play on people’s fears, being in the middle of a recession that wasn’t coming back like they thought it should. Those candidates ran on having answers. They didn’t. A lot of good Republicans got the shaft during that time and that’s too bad.

Actually, those people should have looked at history and how long it takes to come out of something like we went through.

  9. Pat.Herve

    Cargosquid :
What he was missing was 10 million Republicans.

That was the same lame excuse that was used when McCain lost – bottom line, President Obama and the DNC had a better ground game. And people did not believe Mitt Romney, as he flip flopped are every topic, depending on who he was talking to – he said what that particular crowd wanted to hear.

    1. Romney had to make himself over so many times to appeal to the various bases that the poor guy couldn’t even remember who he really was. there was no way he could come back and appeal to mainstream support, even conservative.

You can’t have the wingnuts and wearers of the foil hats dictating policy.

You know the most offensive word in the English language to normal Republicans should be RINO.

  10. Pat,

What excuse? He WAS missing 10 million Republicans. No excuse. They didn’t vote for him, but voted for Bush. McCain had the same problem. Obama DID have a better ground game.

Apparently millions of Republicans were cared more about “sending a message” to the GOP than they did about electing Obama again, knowing what was at stake.

I said nothing about WHY they didn’t vote because each has their own reason.

And since Obama won because more people care about keeping the spending up than anything else…hey, it must be a good idea, right? So, let’s do it. I’m on your side now. I’ve seen the light. The GOP needs to just get out of the way.

    1. If that’s why you believe more people voted for Obama then its time for you go to have a beer and sleep it all off.

People voted for Obama because they like him and because he supports ALL Americans. He didn’t have his nose in someone’s sex life and he didn’t see illegal aliens coming out from under every rock. He realized that the children were here through no fault of their own and he opened the doors for them. How many latino kids turn 18 eary year? Do you think they are going to vote towards their own opression?

      Gay people-same.

Bottom line, Obama doesn’t do much for angry old white men (and sometimes their wives)

  11. And now…something completely different to take our minds off of the recent drama.

    I present Skippy’s List.
    http://skippyslist.com/list/

    Excerpt:
    Explanations of these events:
    a) I did myself, and either got in trouble or commended. (I had a Major shake my hand for the piss bottle thing, for instance.)
    b) I witnessed another soldier do it. (Like the Sergeant we had, that basically went insane, and crucified some dead mice.)
    c) Was spontaneously informed I was not allowed to do. (Like start a porn studio.)
    d) Was the result of a clarification of the above. (“What about especially patriotic porn?”)
    e) I was just minding my own business, when something happened. (“Schwarz…what is *that*?” said the Sgt, as he pointed to the back of my car? “Um….a rubber sheep…I can explain why that’s there….”)

To explain how I’ve stayed out of jail/alive/not beaten up too badly….. I’m funny, so they let me live.

    The 213 Things….

    1. Not allowed to watch Southpark when I’m supposed to be working.

    2. My proper military title is “Specialist Schwarz” not “Princess Anastasia”.

    3. Not allowed to threaten anyone with black magic.

    4. Not allowed to challenge anyone’s disbelief of black magic by asking for hair.

    5. Not allowed to get silicone breast implants.

    6. Not allowed to play “Pulp Fiction” with a suction-cup dart pistol and any officer.

    7. Not allowed to add “In accordance with the prophesy” to the end of answers I give to a question an officer asks me.

    8. Not allowed to add pictures of officers I don’t like to War Criminal posters.

    9. Not allowed to title any product “Get Over it”.

    The rest are great!

This one: 71. I must not flaunt my deviances in front of my chain of command. wouldn’t work in the Navy. This is just called entertainment.

    175. We do not “charge into battle, naked, like the Celts”.
Well, I think that the Marines do.

The scary part? Skippy isn’t alone.
    http://skippyslist.com/friends/

CamelBaks are for water, not beer. (I beg to differ.)

The sound of the Phalanx anti-missile defense system going off is not just a way to alert the crew that the ship is about to sink. (Yes it is.)

Not allowed to shoot at Civilian Contractors in Suburbans if they’re tailgating me. That job belongs to the LT. – True story, don’t ever give that guy the finger. (I love the military.)

UAV’s will not be used to “check out chicks”. Nor will Rotary Wing Assets, NVGs, Thermals, or Long Range Photography Equipment. (Yes they will and I’ve seen the photographs in the intel shop.)

Personally owned watercraft (jet skis) are not supposed to be transported on military trailers, in convoy. (True story: My ship’s CO discovered skiis in the SEAL speed boat while crossing the Atlantic. Their Chief magically appeared at his side. He asked said Chief…”Why do you have skiis in your boat, Chief.” The SEAL answered, “Skipper, those aren’t skiis….those are close inshore recon platforms.” My CO allowed them to keep the skiis. With one condition….. Man, it looked like the Skipper was having in good time in Marseille Harbor.)

  12. @Moon-howler
The last one took a couple of years….we’re behind. The ONLY one that lasted longer is the Great Depression and that one was extended for the exact same reason. But…I’ve seen the light. I’m all in favor of printing more money, enacting more regulations, and taxing more people.

    1. There is not another one to compare it to. Each recession/depression/near depression has its own texture. However, most economists predicted that it will take a full decade to recover from the 2008 crash.

  13. @Moon-howler
“People voted for Obama because they like him and because he supports ALL Americans.”
That’s why “voting is the best revenge.” But..if you want to believe that….whatever works.

    1. Actually winning is the best revenge. Now lets grow up and get over that best revenge stuff. You obviously weren’t listening. STFW! I thought it was a great response.

That’s part of the problem–that republican tendency to try to make something out of nothing when you have freaking elected officials differentiating between rape and real rape.

  14. @Moon-howler
“He realized that the children were here through no fault of their own and he opened the doors for them.”

Great! What other laws can he circumvent with executive orders! We need that efficiency to make America great again!

      • @Cargo,

Happen all the time. Get over it. Love those exec orders, even when Bro Bush does them.

  15. Second Alamo

How about making nothing out of something … like Benghazi, or maybe the firing on our drone by the Iranians on November 1st. BTW, when’s that full investigation into Benghazi suppose to start? I’m not holding my breath.

    1. Good, because you might run into a problem. @SA

More making something out of nothing at all.

      Conspiracy! Conspiracy!!!

  16. Censored bybvbl

    @Cargosquid

What excuse? He WAS missing 10 million Republicans.

Maybe they just died off – the base is getting older and older. (Slap my typing hand!)

  17. @Moon-howler
Like Whoopi Goldberg? “I know it wasn’t rape-rape. It was something else but I don’t believe it was rape-rape.”

Well, she’s not an elected official.

And I’m glad that you agree that electing President Obama is revenge. Way to support ALL Americans. He surely does.

    1. I said winning was the best revenge. Did you actually hear the original comment in context? Seriously, is that the latest BFD out of the republicans?
      🙄

Tell me, if you were Obama, what would you have said? no, don’t boo. Vote. Voting is the best __________________________________________________.
Let’s hear a better way of saying it.

Whoopi Goldberg is a comedienne and an actress. She also isn’t responsible for the enacting legislation that conforms to the Republican platform.

The republicans need to get most of that crap out of their platform. The sad thing is, your rape boys aren’t outliers. The problem is, the rest of America doesn’t think like that. They don’t think women should have to bear the offspring of a rapist.

  18. @Moon-howler
For what reason does the debt ceiling exist?

    1. I am not in school, Cargo. that ship has sailed.

  19. @Moon-howler
I’m not asking as a school question. That was a real question. Since they keep raising it, what is its purpose? If it doesn’t actually DO anything, why do they keep it? I don’t know its purpose since it doesn’t seem to actually have a purpose.

    1. I think it is just a form of accountability. That’s all I know.

  20. @Moon-howler
Ok…what crap? Right to life? Defense of Marriage? Support for small business? Support fo lesser regulation? I pick those because those tend to be the ones that you criticize? Or are there other parts that you are talking about?

The problem is that you are brainwashed into thinking that there is a “war on women” and will support any politician that is pro-choice no matter what other deficiencies they might have. Akins and Mourdock said some stupid stuff. But if there was such a danger to Roe vs Wade, Bush would have done it when the GOP controlled all the branches.

Voting is the best way to support America!
Voting is the best way to support me!
Voting is the best way to elect me and change America!
Voting is the best way to send a message!

There were any number of ways to say that. But his mind was thinking revenge. What a peculiar word for a President to use.

    1. Cargo, how dare you! Don’t you stand there, you young impertinent imp, and tell me there is no war on women. What the hell would YOU know about it? You don’t know one GD thing about women or what kinds of restrictions have been placed on women and girls in my lifetime. I have forgotten more than you will ever know about this subject.

Brainwashed? Screw you. You don’t see me walking around blathering about some cult tea party. You and your think-a-likes have thought yourselves into obscurity. You cannot get your candidates elected. There aren’t enough of you. You are obsolete. Real women simply won’t put up with you all’s crap.

You are absolutely right that I support pro choice politicians. 95% of the time, if a politician is pro choice I can tell you their position on about 300 other issues. One exception would be Senator Colgan. If they aren’t pro-choice, then ditto. They have eaten the entire poisoned apple. I don’t care what they are personally, mind you. I care about their legislative beliefs.

Why don’t you come back after your wife has boxed your ears soundly and works on your social skills. You should listen to your wife before shooting off your mouth. Your wife is right.

You can think what you want but you may not come on my blog and insult me. An apology is in order.

  21. punchak

Again, in my car, surfing the radio, I came upon Hennity. He was going after PALIN. Well, maybe not her, but the Romney bunch that didn’t use Palin during the campaign. According to Hennity, Palin is LOVED by the true Republicans and could have, and would have, made a big difference in the election.

He told an anecdot about Palin going to Albany, NY, without any prior fanfare (believe THAT if you will) and, gee whizz, 22,000 people showed up just to see her. Amazing, huh?

    1. Yea and I don’t believe him.

The more moderate Republicans would have dropped him like a hot potato.

  22. Morris Davis

    @punchak

I was surprised to hear Hannity backing a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants with clean criminal records. Pretty sure Palin wouldn’t approve. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/election-2012/wp/2012/11/08/sean-hannity-ive-evolved-on-immigration/

    1. When did Sean Hannity have a frontal lobotomy? Since when has he become the great enlightened one?

  23. Dr. Ann Stevens, sister of slain Ambassador Chris Stevens spoke with the Washington Post about what is being done to honor her brother.

Dr. Stevens told the WaPo that Chris felt the best security was making friends. the family does not feel like the incidents surrounding his death should have become a political event. The family says that the state Department is communicating with them.

Its time to honor Chris Stevens and honor family wishes.

  24. From insidenova.com:

    Part of PWC’s strategic plan–

The plan mandated all students would pass all Standards of Learning test categories by 2014, exceeding state and national average scores. A chart in Healy’s presentation revealed 89 percent of county students passed the reading exam and 71 percent passed the math portion, compared to 89 and 67 percent statewide in the 2011-12 school year.

    Stupid, PWCS, stupid!!!!!!!!!!!!
ALL students are never going to pass the SOL tests. Why set yourself, schools, students and teachers up for failure. This goal can never never never be reached–not if you are honest. (not saying they are)

Why do school systems keep doing this to themselves. Its political and it is stupid and counter productive.

    FOOLS!

  25. Elena

    Moon,

Cargo is living in lala land. Let him stay there, he will ensure that his party is marginalized for decades to come with his inablity to see the forest through the trees. You lived the era when abortion was illegal, you saw, with your own two eyes, the struggle women went through to control their bodies. It is people like Cargo, in their blissful ignorance, that woudl unwittingly turn back us back to a previous century.

We know womens reproductive freedom is at risk, look at our very own state. Abortion clinics targted under the guise of “protecting” women. What a joke. No evidence to support that assumption, in fact, the only evidence exists to the contrary, abortion is one of the safest procudures. In fact, statistically, giving birth carries the mortatlity rate. In fact, this country ranks 47 in maternal mortality. But we all know how certain republicans hate facts. If McDonnel signs this legislation, it will put such an unnessary burden on clinics that probably most will be forced to close.

Was it our paranioa that Romney said he would pursue ending all funding to Planned Parenthood? Nope, pretty sure he advocated ending one of the most affordable womens’ health clinics in this country. Right though, that isn’t targeting women at all, you just misundersood deary, silly ole you.

  26. @Moon-howler
I didn’t insult you. You just proved my point. But I’ll retract “brainwash.”
I am sorry that I offended you. But you do vote on a single issue. If the candidate is pro-choice you’ll vote for that candidate even if that candidate is bad on other issues.

And young pup….really? At 50, that’s nice. What would I know about a “war on women?” So, we have to be women to understand anything? Hyperbole much? I hate to tell this, but not all women agree with you that there is a war on women, including my wife.

Defunding PP because they refuse to separate their money making business of abortion from their other services is not a war on women. Want PP to be fully funded? Simple. PP drops the abortion issue and separates it into a completely separate entity. And no..don’t tell me that there’s no taxes funding abortion…money is fungible. Abortion is an issue that divides this country by 50%, give or take a few % points, depending on how the question is asked. Roe vs Wade is not going to be overturned. If it was, Bush (a supposed conservative) and the GOP Congress would have done it.

And 16 of the 32 Tea Party candidates, using a broad definition for “tea party candidate, since Akin was NOT the Tea Party candidate (He actually got money from the McGaskill campaign in the primary), won their races with two races too close to call. And some of these races were in deep blue territory. People like West almost won despite his district being redrawn to include 40% more Democrats.

And 60 million voters DID vote for increased spending. If you voted for Obama and the Democrats, you voted for more runaway deficit spending. But..since the people have spoken…who am I to oppose it?

As I said earlier….let it all go. No limits on abortions. Fund it with tax money. Increase spending. Invest in the future. Ramp it up. You think I’m joking…but you’d be wrong.

Do it. Let’s enact every. single. Obama. plan.

    1. Don’t you dare tell me that you didn’t insult me. I decide whether I am insulted or not.

Just who do you think you are?

Your wife voted with her ballot. She may call it what she wants. I prefer to call what has been going on a war on women. Free speech and all. No one says war like Rush slut Limbaough.

You are a young imputent pup to tell a vintage woman anything about reproductive rights. I didn’t ask anyone to agree with me. There are lots of women out there who contribute to their own oppression. Its usually because their husbands tell them too. I live in a different kind of family. My husband is even worse than I am and my son runs a close second.

You are also woefully wrong about Planned Parenthood. Woefully wrong and proud of it.

Roe vs Wade–ditto. woefully wrong and proud of it. All it takes is a test case and a stacked court. i doubt if George Bush would have pushed it. His wife was pro choice. Instead he took the chicken sh!t way around it by using SOTUS appointments. You see how that one worked out for you all.

As for breakdown of who is pro choice and who is anti choice…anti choice folks bully people. You dont know how many times I have been targetted. I have had sprained limbs and eaten the payment more than once in my earlier days. I have have people tell me in my not so younger days how brave I am to speak out. BS. Why shouldn’t I speak out. I have had some A-hole come up into my driveway and rip my bumper stickers off my cars. I have been keyed.

The point I am making is, people like safety nets. They often say one thing and inside the voting booth, do another. Those 3 million votes came from somewhere. People don’t understand also that you can have political beliefs that you might not necessarily act on. (Joe Biden)

its a complicated issue and one I have studied for more than a quarter of a century. You really don’t know very much about it. Most people learn, around me, that it is probably not the best topic to take on. I am outspoken opinionated, and I fear absolutely no one on the subject. That includes people, politianss, clergymen and churches.

  27. I did like it. You need about 50 more like minded jokes though to get back in good graces.

  28. Moon,

I didn’t do it to get back in “good graces.” If I offended you, I’m sorry. But, you are a one issue voter. And I already retracted “brainwashed.” That’s all I can do.

Isn’t it enough that I’m now SUPPORTING the liberal agenda?

    1. @Cargo, you don’t know what kind of voter I am. You have no idea what my check list is or who I will accept under what circumstances. All you can do is assume.

I might not care if a supervisor is pro choice or not. They aren’t in a position to do anything about it one way or another.

  29. blue

Abortion.. Abortion is one of those issues that simply will continue to divide us; not sure there is a solution here, it is either murder or it is a solution to a biological inconvieniance. How do you walk away from murder? Can you nibble at it and say its ok in this case but not another? On the other hand, if it is nothing more than the termination of a biological inconvieniance, then, yes, it is certainly the right of the “host” to terminate that pregnancy at any time – not unlike a cancer – whether for economic, or any other reason. So, what we have is a truce of sorts. Both sides have compromised with the first trimestor, where the religous have agreed to let God sort it out in the early stages and the secular have agreed to prohibit it beyond that date. That agreement of course is no longer good enough for those who want no limits and who continue to seek exemptions to allow it to go further– and therein lies the rub. Worse, politicians know that they can use that divide by invoking fear of the other side to their advantage (money and votes).

It is my sense that Obama used abortion more efectivley than Romney did. Obama coldly looked at his base and voter margins. Romney committed to holding to the deal, against his moral conviction and he paid for it in no small part because it was used to reimforce the larger context of the effort to divide us through the male, rich person, republican based, war on women.

    1. I find it amazing that now people are acting like the hard cases, rape and incest, are liberaling things up. Absurd.

Many of us don’t think abortion is murder. Naturally the closer to term one gets, the more repugnant abotion becomes.
There are no simplistic answers to very complex issues.

    @blue

How about people minding their own business. Don’t believe in abortion? Don’t have one.

It seems that it’s the Right that keeps trying to nibble away at Roe v. Wade.

It’s an issue that Republican operatives have used to keep the religious base of their party in line at the polls. It’s a dog-whistle.

  31. @Censored bybvbl
You and your dog whistles. What dog whistle? They STATED their OPEN opposition to abortion. And you apparently didn’t get the point. Either its murder or its not. YOU have decided that it is NOT. So, ‘minding your own business” is the pro-choice” side. Because if one believes that it is murder, they MUST oppose it.

    @Cargosquid

MYOB. I grew up in the South, the Bible Belt. The Baptists didn’t tell the Presbyterians not to dance. The Catholics didn’t tell the Methodists not to eat meat on Friday. People were religious without thinking they had to convert their neighbors.

I find it odd that because you oppose abortion since your mother chose not to have one that you think that you have the right to limit women’s choices. Grow a vagina, a uterus, and some ovaries and then you’ll be qualified to have an opinion on child-bearing. Most of these anti-choice folks oppose most methods of birth control too. What does that say??? Rhythm method and abstinence only? Barefoot and pregnant? Unemployed? A month old fertilized egg as important as your wife or your daughter or any living woman? Keep up that talk. We’ll see Democrats elected for years in the future.

I don’t believe in sodomy, child abuse, statutory rape, domestic violance, poligamy or a host of other crimes against humanity — whether or not the participants do. I expect the State to act to restrict these activites in a civil society as well.– or should I mind my own business? We do actually have a definition of a self determined human being in Roe vs Wade. Now blow your whistle for trying to expand that definition and other exemptions to it.

    1. @Blue

Child abuse, domestic violence, statutory rape, are all associated with victims. They hurt people. Sodomy and poligamy, if engaged in by consenting adults don’t hurt anyone. Considering sodomy is considered anything but missionary style….oh well…never mind. It is no longer a crime.

  34. @Censored bybvbl
Mind my own business? Because I stated what the the basic argument is and why they feel the need to change the law? You have decided that the unborn do not have the right to life. They are not separate beings from the mother. That a 9 month fetus is the same as a month old fertilized egg….. You see, that is the question. Because some locales allow abortion on demand. Not Virginia unless its “for the health of the mother.”

Blue says it best. To those that are pro-choice….its not murder. To those that are pro-life…it is.

But all this talk of dog whistles is silly. The stances of the parties are well known on abortion.

  35. But..hey! I’ve seen the light. Lets put tax funded Planned Parenthood agencies in every low income neighborhood to provide free services for the health of the women. You’re right. The people have spoken.

  36. WHAT THE HECK?

    CIA Director Petraeus has resigned.

He had a freaking affair after a 30 year marriage.

My head can barely wrap around that. What an idiot.

    1. It is more likely to happen after thirty years than after 2. Life goes on. Affairs happen every day.

Maybe he should have tried to stay. I wonder who outted him.

    @blue
Who’s trying to expand that definition? It appears to be you who is trying to limit it.

You forgot to throw in bestiality. It’s a typical right-winger’s response to the dog-whistle.

    @Cargosquid

It’s a dog whistle reaction when 20 different people rush to say the same thing at the same time – whether it’s “revenge”, the birth certificate, Libya, “stuff for free”. They got an email and they’re going to spread the word.

Are the stances of the parties well known? The Republican platform appears to ban abortion under any condition. Is that the stand of most in the party – even in instances of rape or incest or the mother’s life? If so, expect to lose more elections. The Democrats, for the most part, leave those decisions to the mother – limited only by Roe V. Wade or other state regs.

  39. Mom

Careful throwing in that bestiality reference, you don’t know what someone’s persuasion may be, some of us are still wondering why Elena’s cat was really on the roof. You don’t want to be accuse of starting a war on bestials, err, bestialists, err bestialities, err, sheep-lovers, err Hokies, yeah that’s the ticket.

  40. @Censored bybvbl
So….is it a dog whistle when the left or the media do it? Or is it that there are people that think the same, or are reacting to the same stimulus?

  41. Mom

Me thinks you doth protest too much. What’s going on in that shed on your back forty?

  42. Censored bybvbl

    @Cargosquid

Yeah, both sides do it and some of the media as well. When there’s more breadth than depth beware…

Mom, don’t read anything into that ^. ( Hope my cats never venture onto the roof and get caught on camera!)

  43. @Censored bybvbl
In that case…as long as you admit that it applies to both sides….ok then.

  44. @Moon-howler
Heh….if Petraeus had been President instead of CIA Director….then sleeping around wouldn’t have mattered….. 😉

  45. TWINAD

What is Corey going to do?! Elected Republican leaders (Boehner), conservative commentators (Will and Krauthammer) and even loudmouth conservative pundit (Hannity) are all voicing a “change of heart”, evolution of thought (wow!) on immigration reform. How is Corey going to get to the next level if he continues with his own mantra (if someone is here illegally, they should be deported. Period. End of story.) Just heard him say it last week on TOP. Doesn’t matter if said person is contributing to HIS county as a business owner? Doesn’t matter that he has an American family? None of these things mattered to him a week ago. Will he flip flop on this issue? Can’t imagine he ever would, but if the Federal Government steps up and makes a change to Federal Policy that is not in lockstep with what he espouses, what is he going to do?

    1. Be a good little politician, stick his finger in the air and see which way the wind is blowing????????

  46. TWINAD

He has seriously got to be just FUMING! He probably doesn’t read the Post and opinion pieces and I don’t know what in God’s name the Times is running. But if he has read all the conservative commentator pieces that I have, he has got to be fit to be tied.

    1. I am still trying to figure out how the R’s all turned on a dime since the election.

I would like to think it might have something to do with paperwork……
