A little Pilgrim history

Well, I would have missed a couple questions out of this video, starting with the religion of everyone on board. I would have sworn they were all Pilgrims except for the crew. Wrong.

One is reminded on Oliver Stone and his attempt to uncover real American history. It isn’t necessarily what you learned in 7th grade.

Wil all the history books be rewritten?

It’s traditional around on Thanksgiving–back to our roots

Where would our fan club be without this deightful reminder. I still like it. Plus, how else could our blogger friends possibly call us illegal alien apologists? We gotta give THE ENEMY some ammo.

Meanwhile, how is that mini dream act working out? Can we soon look for some real immigration reform?  There needs to be real solutions to our immigration issues.  No, we cannot deport everyone and there is no line.  Let’s come up with something real.

Hot off the press–more Asians immigrate to the USA now than any other subgroup of people.  Is it all legal immgiration?  You tell me!  Of course not.

I would like to dedicate this year’s viewing of this film to some special friends, the Twinad family. I truly hope this will be THEIR special year.

Extreme wings of GOP denying culpability in loss

Washingtonpost.com:

Evangelical leaders and conservative activists have a simple message for establishment Republicans about Mitt Romney’s failed presidential bid: We told you so.

After nearly two weeks of listening to GOP officials pledge to assert greater control over the party and its most strident voices in the wake of Romney’s loss, grass-roots activists have begun to fight back, saying that they are not to blame for the party’s losses in November.

“The moderates have had their candidate in 2008 and they had their candidate in 2012. And they got crushed in both elections. Now they tell us we have to keep moderating. If we do that, will we win?” said Bob Vander Plaats, president of the Family Leader. Vander Plaats is an influential Christian conservative who opposed Romney in the Iowa caucuses 10 months ago and opposed Sen. John McCain’s candidacy four years ago.

Oy Vey! Another make-over for Corey Stewart!

Does anyone here remember the dressing down that Chairman Stewart gave to Supervisor Candland when the BOCS was adopting the 2012 tax rate?  I sure do!  Corey was appalled by the very suggestion that we not fund our critical services to the residents in this county.  Many, including myself, were quite surprised that Corey would find the fortitude to defend the defenseless that surely would have been the most effected had such a low tax rate been adopted.

Let us not be too hasty though, that was THEN and this is NOW, well by now, I mean several months later.  The “NOW” now means Corey is back stumping for his next move up and out of PWC.   In the Washington Post article entitled “Corey Stewart Proposes Deep Cuts to Social Services Programs in Prince William County”, Corey is clearly back to politics as usual.

In a letter to supervisors, Stewart outlined $9.6 million in potential cuts that would significantly reduce funding for the county health department, the Juvenile Court Services Unit and substance abuse treatment for jail inmates, among other services. He  also proposes eliminating some funding for nonprofit groups, including Legal Services of Northern Virginia.

Is the GOP kicking the tea party to the curb?

Politico.com

It’s time, they say, for Washington bosses to be more assertive about  recruiting and then defending promising candidates. They argue that it’s  critical to start enlisting local conservative activists as allies and to ease  the tea party versus Washington dynamic that’s wreaked havoc on the party.

All easier said than done, of course. Tea party types have relished showing  the chosen candidates of the Washington establishment a thing or two — and it’s  hard to see them laying down arms overnight. But after a sure-bet election in  2012 turned into an electoral disaster, Republicans say resolving their primary  problem is, well, their primary problem.

Keep UMD in the ACC–no big 10

Maryland fans and followers found out over the weekend that the Board of Regents was voting today on a major move for all UMD athletics.  The University of Maryland is a charter member of the prestigious Atlantic Coast Conference.  To leave the ACC for the Big Ten is simply stupid and it will coast the school over $50 million.

Rationale behind this proposal is sketchy at best and fans have had little time to mount an offensive against this move.  A group has formed on Facebook to oppose leaving the ACC.  Keep UMD in the ACC.

Call 301-445-1911 or 301-445-2701 to voice your opposition.  The regents vote today.

AARP: 800 pound gorilla in the room

The day you turn 50 you get that dreaded over-the-hill invitation–but from whom?   Ah–from none other than your friendly folks over at AARP, better known as the 800 pound gorilla in the room.  It is a group that conservatives love to hate almost as much as the NEA–both of them, and PBS.  It’s a powerful group and it has 37 million members and $1.3 billion budget which is  a force to be reckoned with.

You can join AARP the day you turn 50.  Why so early, most people don’t retire at 50.  Well, the reasoning is, you have to get ready to retire at 50.  Actually, it is probably a good idea to start getting ready for retirement at age 25 but of course, no one believes it.  At 25, you are immortal.  (even more reason to prepare, looking at things from the other end of the barrel but you can’t tell young people anything.)

Israel fights back

How many rockets need to be fired into Israel before she fights back?  At least 500 rockets have been fired into Israel from the Gaza Strip in the past week.  Reports say that the rockets are often launched from schools and mosques, making the Israelis look like the bad guy for firing back.

At what point does the international community back Israel and acknowledge that it has a right to defend itself.  This type of disruption and harassment must be contained and stopped.  No pass for Hamas.  In fact, someone needs to go in and give them a solid pounding.  Not only is Hamas endangering the lives of the Israelis and the Christians and Jews and Muslims in Jerusalem, but they are endangering the civilians on the Gaza Strip, many of whom are children.

Are there rogue versions of Hamas?  Certainly this behavior isn’t sanctioned by the local government Hamas?  If yes, then this ought to be a solid reminder to be careful what we wish for.  Not too many years ago we all wished for democracy in the middle east.  Hamas is duly elected by the people–by the residents of the Gaza Strip.  Do you think this is really what they wanted?

Sadly, civilians now have no choice over the current situation at hand.  The civilians are going to be the ones blown to kingdom come once the Israeli war machine unleashes on the hooligans who are bombing Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and other Israel spots.

Hamas, meanwhile, represents the height of irresponsibility.

The news has jumped the shark! Generals taking orders from their privates

My favorite soap opera character is Grayson Wolf. And what is wrong with Susan Lucci? I know she is no spring chicken but geez. Put some meat on that woman’s bones.

You couldn’t make this stuff up. Stephen just will never get it.

I am not sure I will ever get past General Petraeus being a hottie. He probably never will either. Then we have the iron pumping girl friend, the diplomat other woman with an evil twin and a shirtless FBI agent.

Stop. This is just too far fetched. No freaking wonder we are quagmired in Afghanistan. Get out of there!!! Someone sent me an email today about the generals taking orders from the privates. I think that says it all.   How do we get past this soap opera?

Mitt Romney still complaining about “the gifts”

Mitt Romney also had his gifts. How about lowering taxes for the rich boys? Expanded oiling drilling? Ripping the heart out of Planned Parenthood? He had his own gift bag.

However, not all Republicans are hell bent on blaming a no longer traditional America for all the GOP’s woes. Listen to what Bobby Jindal has to say about how Americans view these gifts. According to the Washington Post:

We think voters generally make decisions based on a complex assessment of their own interests and what they think is good for the country. Mr. Romney apparently views the people as a series of segmentable, selfish market shares. That is “absolutely wrong,” said Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (R). “We have got to stop dividing American voters.”

It’s encouraging that many Republicans are repudiating the contemptuous, and contemptible, O’Reilly-Romney worldview.

Is American no longer traditional? Is ‘traditional’ a dog whistle for something else? What has changed radically recently? All roads lead me to suggest the obvious.

How do the Republicans get back in the saddle and start discussing ideas rather than relying on the sound-bytes from the many bases?

To the Democrats, Romney is just the gift that keeps on giving as he speaks of Obama giving gifts.  It looks like Romney meant what he said in his 47% quote.

UN: Contraception is a human right

Huffingtonpost.com:

GENEVA (AP) — The United Nations says access to contraception is a universal human right that could dramatically improve the lives of women and children in poor countries.

It is the first time the U.N. Population Fund’s annual report explicitly describes family planning as a human right.

It effectively declares that legal, cultural and financial barriers to accessing contraception and other family planning measures are an infringement of women’s rights.

The report released Wednesday isn’t binding and has no legal effect on national laws.

The global body also says increasing funding for family planning by a further $4.1 billion could save $11.3 billion annually in health bills for mothers and newborns in poor countries.

The U.N. doesn’t count abortion among the measures.

I totally agree. Women will not have economic autonomy and control unless they have the basic right to control their own reproduction.   This concept is even more important in lesser developed countries where  women have inadequate health services.   Women in poor countries often walk miles  to clinics and to traveling health care providers in hopes of getting contraception so that they can avoid yearly pregnancy.

It’s about time their plight is universally recognized.  How many children can women bear in a lifetime?  How does unlimited fertility affect poverty?

The Post’s View: A wrongly imprisoned man in Virginia

Washington Post Editorial:

IN VIRGINIA, a young man has languished in prison for four years for a crime he did not commit. Now that his lone accuser has admitted that she invented the charges against him, the state and the courts seem paralyzed, unable to quickly arrange for the release of the wrongfully imprisoned man. This is a travesty.

The man is Jonathan Montgomery, age 26. In 2007, a then-teenage girl named Elizabeth Paige Coast accused Mr. Montgomery of having molested her six years earlier, when she was 10 and he was 14. It wasn’t true.
