Cindi Lauper: Blue Christmas

Cindi Lauper does such a great job with this Christmas song.

I can promise you Elena didn’t do her make up for her.  *I* might have, but Elena sure didn’t.   Slap a big turquoise on the lady…the bigger the better.  My role model.

Merry Christmas to all the Moonhowlings family!

Wayne Lapierre: Dismisses gun culpability

Lapierre has marginalized the NRA right down to an extremist group.  He has blamed Hollywood, the game industry, culture, but never guns.  Guns simply have role in the deaths of 28 people.  UFB.

I am not willing to point the finger and blame guns solely, but they certainly play a role in the culture of fear that runs through our society now.  Until Lapierre is willing to sit down and talk about solutions that restrict some forms of weapons and some forms of ammo, his organization is just a joke.  Perhaps he doesn’t speak for as many people as he thinks he does.

The NRA will have to get different representation if they want to have any spot at the solutions table.  They have lost all cred at this point with the majority of americans, if recent polls are any indication.

Revenge of the purged: The A-hole factor

aholesamash

Why do we continue to allow low-lifes like these to continue to collect a pay check?

Three back-bench martyrs of the Republican Conference sent a message back to  their leaders yesterday: Payback’s a bear.

Reps. David Schweikert (R-Ariz.), Justin Amash (R-Mich.) and Tim Huelskamp  (R-Kan.), all stripped of prized committee assignments earlier this month  because of perceived sins against the party, did a three-amigos end zone dance  as GOP leaders struggled and failed to get the votes for a tax-cut bill designed  to empower Speaker John Boehner in negotiating the so-called fiscal cliff.

All three voted against a related spending-cut bill that  narrowly passed earlier on Thursday.

Schweikert Tweeted that he would be a “no” vote on the tax measure.

And, after Boehner concluded he didn’t have the votes to move forward,  Huelskamp issued a fiery press release accusing GOP leaders of trying to bully  rank-and-file Republicans into voting for a bad bill.

Gun hobbyists attempt to deport Piers Morgan

immigration

Huffingtonpost.com:

Piers Morgan’s outspokenness about gun control has brought about a petition seeking to deport him from the United States.

The petition, which has been submitted on a White House website, has received over 12,000 signatures. (It takes 25,000 before the White House is obligated to address the petition.) The petition was launched by writer Kurt Nimmo. The text reads:

British Citizen and CNN television host Piers Morgan is engaged in a hostile attack against the U.S. Constitution by targeting the Second Amendment. We demand that Mr. Morgan be deported immediately for his effort to undermine the Bill of Rights and for exploiting his position as a national network television host to stage attacks against the rights of American citizens.

Morgan has made several forceful attacks on pro-gun advocates in the wake of the massacre at Sandy Hook elementary.

The NRA speaks out–finally, assumes no responsibility

The NRA posed lots of solutions.  Many of them I agree with.  A police officer in every school would be great.  But who will pay for it?  In PWC, there are over 90 schools.  Let’s say one officer, when all was said and done, with a car, equipment, salary, benefits, and pension would cost in the neighborhood of $100,000.   That’s no small chunk of change.    Is the NRA going to help with the cost?  Didn’t think so.   I think I am low balling that figure anyway.  It sounds like we are taling $10 million.

The NRA suggested we get tougher on the mentally ill.  I am all in favor of that also.  What I haven’t heard is how the NRA is going to change.  Are they going to decide that the man on the street doesn’t need military type weapons?    How many rounds do we need to fire a minute?  The NRA assumed no responsibility in any of this and  I have a problem with that.

We tax cigarettes, booze,   gambling and use some of those funds to  fixing the problems those things cause.  Perhaps we need to start taxing guns sales  and ammunition sales to apply towards fixing some of the problems that America’s gun pastime is producing.

I can already hear the howling.  Let’s put it another way, I don’t want to buy guns and ammo.  Why should I pay for someone else’s hobby that leaves a very expensive foot print?  As long as 2A rights involve high powered weapons that can inflict untold damage on those caught in the crossfire,  those who insist on no restrictions can just help pay for it.

Marshall proposes bill requiring Virginia teachers to be armed

armed teachers

Washingtonpost.com:

Del. Robert G. Marshall is proposing a bill that would require some teachers or other school staff to carry concealed weapons in schools.

Marshall (R-Prince William) requested that the bill be drafted in response to the mass shooting last week at a Connecticut elementary school.

Gov. Robert F. McDonnell (R) said this week that there should be a discussion about whether school staff should be allowed to carry concealed weapons to protect children against intruders.

Marshall’s proposal goes beyond the governor’s comments, which were made in the course of a radio interview Tuesday. Marshall would not only allow staff with concealed handgun permits to carry them in schools, but require school districts to designate some staff members to do so. Those employees would have to be certified in gun safety and competence, Marshall said.

Thanks, Republicans, thanks for nothing

boehner-obama

The House has concluded Legislative business for the week.   Speaker Boehner could not  muster the votes.  There is no deal.

Eric Cantor probably played vulture politics,  hoping to not get the votes, so he could take the speakership away from Boehner.  Can we all say weasel together?  I wish I could have seen the fighting.   There seems to be a lot of that these days.

So they can all go home and the rest of us will watch our investments circle the drain.

Thanks, MOfo’s.  Just what I wanted for Christmas.

How many people in Northern  Virginia will lose their jobs right after Christmas?  I already know of people who have been laid off from the defense industry.  How will that impact the rest of the nation?  We are in serious trouble.

Perhaps the American people should hold Congress’s paychecks until they finish their job.  They have abrogated their responsibilities.

Zero  more days until Christmas.  Are you ready for the big day?  If you have little people around, you might be Christmas’ed out.  Who has a wonderful tradition they would like to share with everyone?  Who has a favorite album of Christmas songs?  How about just a favorite song?  Who sang it?  You may choose more than one.

I will go first.  Joan Baez has the voice of an angel.  have you ever heard her sing O Holy Night?  Jennifer Hudson runs a close second.  Then there is Rachel from Glee.  Rachel’s version is very dramatic and I can’t listen without it bringing tears to my eyes.  How about Roy Orbison singing Pretty Paper?

Winter Solstice 12-21-12

winter-solstice 2

Winter Solstice happens on a busy day.  As if  being the Mayan Doomsday isn’t enough, today is the shortest day of the year, which is what the Winter Solstice is.

Astronomically,  Winter Solstice represents the shortest day and the longest night, when the sun is lowest on the horizon in the northern hemisphere.  After 12-21-12, the days will get longer.  12-21-12 marks the first day of winter–known to the ancients as the starving time or the dark time.  Daylight on Friday, December 21, 2012 will officially be 9 hours, 26 minutes long.    Winter begins at 11:09 a.m.  (The Washington Post says 6:12 a.m. but who’s counting?)

The Capital Weather Gang reports some interesting facts HERE.

Winter was a very terrifying time for ancient people.  Darkness consumed much of their day.  Freezing temperatures, snow, ice and freezing rain made life difficult and dangerous.  Survival was never a sure thing.   Too much snow could trap the ancients inside their shelters which were usually caves.  Those who couldn’t get out often died of thirst and hunger.  Its no wonder that rituals began and the night before winter began was one of merriment–a little cheer to tide the folks over until spring.

Mayan Calendar: 12-21-12 Doomesday

Mayan Calendar
Mayan Calendar

12-21-12.  Not quite a palindrome.   December 21, 2012 has been long awaited because it marks the end of one of the Mayan calendars.  The popular TV shows, the X Files marked its alien take over based on 12-21-12.  People around the world are collecting food in survivalist mode.

The Russian government has supposedly assured all the Russians that there is no asteroid of planet out there with a direct course towards earth.  As they work to quell the end of the world panic in their country, I expect vodka sales are booming.

Quantico Drills Heard All the Way to Haymarket!

So, as I am making my blueberry pie, intermittently I hear this loud boom sound, like someone is blasting through rock somewhere.  My husband, who is off from work says to me, “I think that sound must be the concrete truck across the street, but damn, that’s loud.”

A short time later,  Alanna calls (you know, anti bvbl Alanna) and says “Holy crap, do you year that loud booming sound” and I say “yes” and we try to figure out where the hell  it is coming from.

She decides to call the non emergency number and is told that it is Quantico is running drills, but because of the especially low cloud cover, the sound is traveling especially far today!   Apparently they have been getting numerous calls from the Gainesville and Haymarket today.

Been here 11 years, never heard this before!

News and Messenger:   (Amanda Stewart)

When students arrived at many area schools Monday and Tuesday, they may have noticed extra police officers at school.

Prince William County police officials planned to have extra officers at area schools throughout the week in response to Friday’s shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

“An increased presence of police will be in and around the county schools this week,” Prince William County police said in a statement posted on the department’s Facebook page. “Please do not be alarmed. The pain of last Friday’s events has reached across our nation. We simply want to reassure our children that they are safe in school and our community.”
