McDonnell isn’t much of a businessman. Saslaw is right. Why should Virginians absorb the entire cost when clearly 1/3 cars on our highways are out of state. McDonnell shoots himself in the foot, again, with this proposal. The metrics aren’t on his side.

It is absurd. This is a maneuver so that McDonnell can go on after office, and say “I cut the gas tax” – without ever mentioning that he raised the sales tax in order to do it. Index the gas tax, put a gas sales tax in place – but to tax a pair of sneakers or pair of gloves to fund the roads is not a good plan at all. Where are all the Tea Partiers now? A person who does not even own a car could very well pay more towards transportation then a trucking company.
@Pat.Herve
Well, you don’t see the TP supporting him do you?
Now..Jindal we can get behind. HE’s thinking outside of the box.

This might be a real storm….I am waiting so see how this kicks down.
I just looked at the Jindal proposal. I love it. My income taxes will go to zero, and I am out of state enough that I can buy all my purchases across the border, thus avoiding the increased sales tax on all of my big purchases. Less money to Virginia. Saves me a ton of money. All the while, my unemployed and poorly compensated neighbors will see their tax contributions increase. So, this is the Conservative way, now I understand, and am beginning to like it.
I just saw that Scott Walker is onto a similar bandwagon – all of them trying to outdo each other.
Cargo needs to replant the Jindal link. I lost it.
@Moon-howler
Weird. I see it.
Here ya go.

I just didnt know where it was. I figured it was just as easy for you to plant it as it was for me to hunt it down.
Oh, OK. Washington state has no income tax but they have over 7% sales tax. My friends who live in south west Washington go across the river (Columbia) to Oregon that has no sales tax. Oregon has high property
In fact, several people I know do the same thing.
Good deal if your geographics work out for you.
The sales tax is more regressive than the income tax.
The Washington Post has a good analysis of the tax and discussion in the comments section here:

Thanks, Cindy!
Will I be depressed after reading it?
Good article, Cindy.
I especially enjoyed the exchange with Creigh Deeds. He really is a Virginia gentleman.
I got a very nice email from him this week. i had written him opposing the reappointment of Helen Dragas to U=the UVA Board of Visitors. He is in agreement.
She darn near destroyed the school since now Southern Association has put UVA a probation of sorts.
Post has that showdown covered, too:
