So much for  government regulation of the amount of soda a person can drink.   At what point do we have the right to poison ourselves if we want?

I am not sure govt. has the right to control how much we drink, regardless of the substance.

New York Times email:

A judge invalidated New York City’s ban on large sugary drinks on Monday, one day before it was to go into effect, dealing Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg a major blow.

The decision by Justice Milton A. Tingling Jr. of the State Supreme Court in Manhattan blocks the city from putting the rules into effect or enforcing them.

Justice Tingling said the rule banning the drinks was “arbitrary and capricious.”

So is the judge right in this case?  You can be sure john Stewart will have something to say about this!

We are becoming an obese society – and the obesity is leading to early onset diabetes, as well as other ailments, increasing the healthcare costs of all – but especially of government (Medicaid and Child Health). Should the government do nothing when it sees what we are doing to ourselves?

What is the difference in having a tobacco age, requiring seat belts, and restricting the size of sugary drinks. No one says that you cannot have 64oz of coke, just that you have to have it 16oz at a time. Why have DUI laws when you can just let the insurance companies work it out.

Shame that it has been overturned.

  2. I lied. Jon Stewart is on vacation this week. Live to fight another day.

There are, alas, some things I drink that I’m sure we could get a panel of medical experts to say I should abstain from. Not sure I want the Mayor of Falls Church restricting me, however. At this point, I’m going to take my chances. On the other hand, If the Mayor wants to go on TV and start a public service announcement campaign to try to influence me to adopt healthier behaviors, let him have at it.

    1. Agreed. Influence away. Legislate nothing.

but at what cost – there is a chemical being used and overused – causing illness in the population. The costs of these diseases are rising, the numbers are rising. Should the government do something about it? What it the difference between overuse of Sugar and PCB’s, Asbestos, Lead, etc. There is no difference. I was at an affair recently, and the water (Dasani) was more expensive than the Coke – how can the water be more expensive, other than the company KO – wants me to become hooked on the Coke.

The Bloomberg rule does not prevent one from drinking all the soda they want, only in 16oz portions with free refills – what it does is make one Aware that they are drinking more than they should.
