Two Marines were shot and killed Thursday at the Officer Candidate School at the Marincs Corps Base Quantico and the suspected shooter fatally shot himself at the base, Marine Corps officials said.
The shootings happened at the school located on the Marines Corps base in Quantico at about 11 p.m., said 1st Lt. Agustin Solivan, a spokesman for the base.
Marines from the Provost Marshal’s office and officers from the Prince Williams Police Department responded and found two active-duty Marines dead at the scene. Officials declined to identify the victims until next of kin could be notified.
Military officials put the base on lockdown shortly after the initial reports and urged base personnel to remain indoors behind locked doors for nearly four hours.
Authorities said the suspected gunman had been barricaded inside a building on the base for several hours.
By 2:45 a.m. Friday, investigators had entered the building and found the shooter, also an active-duty Marine, dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The incident has been described as isolated. This one is a little too close to home. Details are very sketchy.
It highlights the high rate of suicides in the military, as well as the easy access to guns. The republicans refused to let commanders ask if their troops keep guns at home. This good-guy-with-a-gun case fails again, as military bases are hardly gun-free zone. There are too many guns in our society which makes us prone to dangers like these. We need gun control.
Starry…Starry…Starry…
How did I guess that this comment would be from you?
A) Bases are DEFINITELY de-facto gun free zones since, by law, everyone except the cops are disarmed.
B) This MURDER highlights the suicide problem? Really?
C) Since the strict gun control on the base did nothing to stop it…please, show how YOU would structure such gun control to prevent criminal acts with firearms.
Sad story, but Uriah Kiser of PotomacLocal.com did a great job breaking it. http://www.poynter.org/latest-news/mediawire/208065/online-va-outlet-beats-local-national-news-orgs-to-quantico-shootings-story/
\Kudos to Uriah Kiser!
I look forward to finding out more details about this tragedy. Death is too common an occurance 🙁
@Moon-howler
This is happening all the time now. Smaller online sites are scooping the traditional news sources.
Uriah is pretty much a one man show.
Probably a love triangle.

@Punchak
The shooter was the one who had done 3 tours of duty.
Remember a few years ago when everyone got all whooped out at Janet Napoletano over sthe mere suggestion that those who had served could possibly have any problems?
This I what happens to people after a decade of war. These people need help.
The toll of ten year wars and repeated deployments is extremely high. We will paying the price for this, in terms of human suffering, for decades. I do believe that many of today’s generation are not made of the same “stuff” as those of the greatest generation. Why? I don’t know, it’s just what I observe.
