Mrs. Caddigan restates the obvious–too much building and not enough of a commerical base. If she could only arm-twist the rest of the guys to stop rubber-stamping the development. “Slow down the construction of the new homes and concentrate on the commericial” is more than fair….
Growth exceeds the rate of revenues. That’s the way it has always been.
The BOCS needs to slow the growth. Good for Pete Candland for echoing her remarks….before he went off the deep end on zero base budget approach.
For the record, Prince William County, at least in modern times, has never required teachers to buy their own supplies. Most of them do buy things they want for their own instructional purposes, but they don’t have to. Many years ago, a secretary at a mid county elementary school used to hand out one strip of staples at a time, or so I have been told. Perhaps in that case…..
Prince William County Schools do a darn good job with what they are given. It sickens me to read some of the garbage I read on the blogs from people who live in a fantasy world about how they would run things.
Milt Johns did a superior job in his presentation. I am totally tired of all the wannabe’s thinking they know more than he does or more than the school board in general.
As I cruise though the blogsphere, I see that we must have hit a nerve.
Kudos to Mrs. Caddigan.
While I respect Mrs. Caddigan, she only gets on this horse when school issues are in play, otherwise she is as bad as the rest of them at rubber stamping new housing development without the developers paying for the public infrastructure needed to provide the public services residents from those new houses will demand from local government. To refresh some memories, this happens because residential developers get their paydays much quicker than commercial developers do and profit margins on residential development is much higher than on commercial. Residential developers bribe the BOCS with campaign contributions, plus off-record goodies, and window-dressing “proffers”. This shell game has been going on in PWC for decades, first with King, then with Seefeldt, then Connaughton, now Stewart. Caddigan’s complaining about the consequences of, in most cases, her own votes. These are basically crocidile tears.
@Blue Moon
Go back a little further…you are letting some people off the hook who need to be in the net.
Oops. Crocodile, not crocidile.
Blue Moon,
Hope springs eternal! I hope that THIS time Ms. Caddigan puts her vote where her mouthr is. She ended up voting for Avendale which we know turned 25 homes in several hundered. Thank the Grizzlies for providing cover to the BOCS on that one. Stonehaven is headed down the same path unless knowledgable citizens get out there and educate the public how citizens actually get screwed in the long run. The ignorance of these sports teams to get out and talk about how they are getting more playing fields is beyond any common sense. Even in the staff report it acutally says that it would be premature to discuss any parks. Don’t these people know that the park land will be the ER and land under the new power lines that will most likely be approved.
A person on Inside Nova pointed out a great point yesterday…when it comes to splitting the share of County tax money, Fairfax County follows the same percentages that we do here in PWC. The difference is the lack of commercial taxes and that our taxes are so low, that there is less money to put into schools. If Candland wants to give them more money, then lets scrap this flat tax fiasco…
I think that Candland is right to want to change the ratio split but…it needed to be done before the rate was advertised. If we do that now, something is going to come up short somewhere.
@Moon-howler
Sorry MH, out of touch for the rest of the day yesterday. Could you be a little more specific? Sure there’s plenty of fish could go in that net but your post was specifically about Caddigan so I mostly focused on her. My shot at the past and current chairs was because they set the tone for the board. Of the 4 named the worst are Connaughton and Stewart because they came to office with strong rhetoric about getting the corruption out of PWC gov’t/politics but once in office became even worse than their predecessors, all for personal political ambition and/or weak character. I will give Connaughton credit for publicly stating that Stewart (a fellow Republican) has integrity problems but that’s really the only nod he deserves for his time in PWC politics.
@Moon-howler
Also, certainly Hilda Barg, John Jenkins and Wally Covingtgon rank much worse than Caddigan when it comes to records on voting this issue. Jenkins is probably the worst of those three because after all these years on the board, against all evidence to the contrary, he still says that in PWC development pays for itself. Either he’s the stupidest person in PWC politics, or he’s a liar, or he’s corrupt. No good options there.
@Elena
Yes, Elena. Hope does spring eternal. But, as my father always said when he was alive, trust everyone but cut the cards.
