cicada4This red-eyed fellow is ready to join his brothers and sisters for a chorus of humming, sawing and chirping.  It’s sort of his swan song before his demise.  Bugs are strange beings.  What sort of DNA coding is in them that makes them awake after 17 years, crawl to the surface like zombies, to sing a song and then croak?

I like the cicada sound.  There is something soothing and predictable about their song.  It reminds me of the south.  Ordinarily I HATE bugs but the cicada is except from Howler hate.  (so far)

I hear that Round Elementary is literally crawling with the creatures.

The invasion has not yet reached Vienna, but I’m ready for them. I’m keeping my skillet greasy. Be sure to remove the wings and legs before you sautee, folks.

  2. Scout

Well, I’m sorry, Moon, but the wings and legs are that sort of hard keritinous tissue that, if you cook them long enough to be tender (or even digestible), the sweet meat in the center is ruined.

But, if you want to do your way, do it your way. Just don’t invite me over for a locust dinner at your house. (I’ll come over for drinks before, however).

  3. Second Alamo

That makes sense. If you don’t pull off the wings and legs they’ll get away!

Their chorus always sounds as though they’re off in the distance – even when you know they’ve got to be overhead as well.

Our Border Collie has left them alone despite his ardor for snapping at bees, flies, and moths. I’m guessing that one must has touched his nose with its somewhat sticky feet.

  5. I just think they are the hueys of the bug world.

  6. Why do the citizens always thank the supervisors for allowing them to speak at citizens time?

It really grouses me to THANK them.

  7. Lyssa

Come hear and listen to those things non stop….the sound is wearing on you after six hours – one thing to drive through it. This is with the windows SHUT!

    1. I feel like they are in my head. Some of them sound unearthly.

My neighbor’s dog is scarffing the cicada up like they were popcorn. They walked by my place a couple of days ago and he snapped up about five or six while we were chatting. The owner says the make for nasty poop 🙁

NYC police: Notes to Obama, mayor had gun threats

WASHINGTON (AP) — A suspicious letter mailed to the White House and intercepted this week was similar to two threatening, poison-laced letters on the gun law debate sent to New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, one of the nation’s most potent gun-control advocates, officials said Thursday.

Gun huggers are trying to murder president Obama.

    Trains

    1. I assumed trains. I should have asked what all is happening that you would like to share with people who might be trying to decide if they want to stroll on over.

  13. Tornadoes terrorizing Oklahoma City area right now…7:42.

Totally amazing to watch this first hand. It makes me glad I live in Virginia.

The special VRE excursion trains to Clifton and back are always popular.
Plus there are model train layouts, music, vendors, food, etc.

Apparently a proposed new PWC seal has created a stir.
It does appear to be more “basic” than most.
That is a tobacco plant on the old one, right?

    1. The ‘mary-jane’ seal (I know its really tobacco) remains. The blue squares are the new logo. We are trying to establish and grow our brand. The seal will be used on official things like police uniforms and vehicles–any place we are official. The logo, as I understand it, will just be a symbol.

Its a huge stink over nothing if you ask me.

Seriously, more people are sitting around behind their computer screens attacking over a logo and meanwhile, the chairman has called all the delegates who oppose this freaking road that is going to gut this county like a catfish (and we get nothing out of it) ‘cowards’ from the dais.

Meanwhile we get the dubious honor of paying 6% sales tax while the rest of the state outside Northern VA gets to pay 5%. Does anyone scream about this? No. They would rather sit around and wet themselves over a logo rather than howl over getting screwed by the state.

Good for Corey for calling that one out. (yes, that kudo hurt me but he is right on that call.)

    2. Actually, some of those seals are beautiful. Thanks for that link. Prince William’s is not beautiful. It looks like a 2nd grader drew it. Is there any place in the county where tobacco is grown? No. You can bearly find a cow. It might be a good contest for our 80,000 plus school kids to design a new county seal. A nice thousand dollar prize would justify any instructional time spent. Kids might learn a little more about their county. On the other hand, that might not be such a good idea.

One of the best designs is the Richmond County Seal. Prince William has the Potomac River as well as the battlefield and everything that goes with that.

My neighborhood seems to be immune from cicadas or something. I haven’t heard or seen a single one yet.

    1. Many people would say you are very lucky.

Do you get the annual ones in August?

  17. punchak

    @Emma
    No such critters here (n)either!

  18. Emma

I could hear a few on my bike ride this morning around Ashton. And they were dive-bombing us at the P-Nats game last night. But still nothing in my neighborhood.

  19. Lyssa

    @Emma

    ….soooooo jealous.
