60 years ago Sir Edmund Hillary reached the top of Mt. Everest, the tallest mountain in the world. (May 28, 1953) At the time they didn’t know if it was even humanly possible to reach the summit. Even though the crew used oxygen, they weren’t sure something else wasn’t going to kill them on the spot.
Below is a view of the world from the top of Mt. Everest.
“Nobody climbs mountains for scientific reasons. Science is used to raise money for the expeditions, but you really climb for the hell of it.” Sir Edmund Hillary
Conquering
Typo in thread title.
That said…there was a video of someone jumping off the summit in one of those flying squirrel suits. He hit 125 mph. And last week someone got in trouble for doing an interview via smartphone.
Smartphone. They get reception on Mt Freaking Everest. That Sunday…. over 100 people topped the summit.
Its no longer the challenge that it was. There are now ladders in places.
We live in amazing times.

Moderation?
It happens. Not sure why.
Very few things are truly daring any more. I remember reading about Mt. Everest and Annapurna way back then, getting chills down my spine. Now, two 80+ Japanese men have managed to get to the top. The mountain is littered with used oxygen cans and other stuff left behind by those who climb to satisfy their egos.
I also remember reading, with the same chills, about Jaques Cousteau’s daring expeditions down deep. Now, …
Space – same thing!
We probably have just as much trash up there has there is on Everest.
