The White House and NASA on Tuesday will ask the public for help finding asteroids that potentially could slam into the Earth with catastrophic consequences.
Citing planetary defense, the administration has decided that the search for killer rocks in space should be the latest in a series of “Grand Challenges,” in which the government sets an ambitious goal, helps create public-private partnerships and sometimes offers prize money for innovative ideas.
“This is really a call to action to find all asteroid threats to human populations and know what to do about them,” NASA Deputy Administrator Lori Garver said Monday. She said the asteroid hunt would help prove that “we’re smarter than the dinosaurs.
So if someone discovers a huge asteroid headed our way, what do we do about it? Detection is only part of this equation. Have we been too complicit about the threat of asteroids causing a Catastrophic event? Will we eventually become the next dinosaur?
What do we do about it? Hide behind Corey’s ego that should shield us from almost anything.
PARTY LIKE THERE’S NO TOMORROW!
Preparation H cures asteroids….I think.
I suppose we could turn it over to NSA and see if they can gather enough information to help us decide what to do. ;-). A nice diversionary tactic but in all seriousness, a big enough asteroid strike could perhaps send us the way of the dinosaurs or certainly push us into a “Mad Max” existence. We are going to have to develop “instant launch” space vehicles and rid means for detecting and diverting asteroids. I know I’m simply stating the obvious…
Every one complains that no one in government ever listens to them. Now that the NSA is finally listening, every one complains again. The government can’t win.
How would we dodge one? Could we blow it up or hit it with enough ammo to throw its trajectory off course?
@BSinVA
That was actually very funny. 🙂
