Former US President George Bush Senior has shaved his head to show support for a child suffering from leukaemia.
The 89-year-old Republican made the bold decision to be rid of his familiar grey locks after he saw that all the members of his Secret Service security detail had just done likewise.
One of the agents has a two-year-old son currently undergoing treatment for the cancer, and is losing his hair as a result.
And in a display of solidarity, the president and his men got the clippers out earlier this week at his summer home in Kennebunkport, Maine.
A spokesman for Mr Bush identified the young boy only as Patrick, and said the security detail had launched a website, , to help pay for his treatment.
The Bush family lost their little daughter Robin to leukemia nearly 60 years ago. The former president got the idea when he saw everyone in his security detail had shaved their heads in support of Little Patrick.
Americans who feel their country has lost its way have to look no further than George Herbert Walker Bush. He continues to represent decency on all levels and in all that he does. His years of public service are exemplary.
Republican rebranding? Don’t stray far. Look to Bush 41 for the answers.
Decency should NEVER go out of style.
What an example he sets!
I met him and Mrs. Bush (Got a hug!) when they did a surprise, unannounced visit to Qatar. I happened to be on a 4 day RnR at that base. Walked to the “rec” center and was asked by a guy in a dark suit, “Would you like to meet President Bush?” Needless to say…..YES!
I thought he meant the one in office….. but, Hey! This was great. Very gracious man and a lovely woman.
Lucky opportunity. I actually met Lyndon Johnson in a similar manner on a field trip to the Smithsonian.
I stand tall and render a salute to him…and as a disability advocate, the photo speaks volumes about former President Bush.
We could use a little more compassion in this country. Good show.
While Imdid not care for his politics, he was a gentleman’s gentleman–perhaps the last of his kind. His service to our nation is perhaps unsurpassed by it’s selflessness. And even as he nears the sunset of his life he continues to demonstrate unparalleled empathy.
Totally agree, George.
He was also known for his decency and lack of arrogance when he headed up the CIA. Back in the day, many CIA folks lived in Manassas. Most of them said they worked for Dept of Army or State Dept. also.
I didn’t even mind his politics before he served under Reagan. Operative word is BEFORE.
One of the two finest, most competent men I have ever had the pleasure of working with in Government or politics. Full stop. Mrs. Bush is remarkable also. I’d readily put both of them in the National Treasures category.
