A Virginia Beach radiologist lent $50,000 to a real estate corporation owned by Gov. Robert F. McDonnell and his sister in 2010 — the same year the doctor was offered an appointment to a state medical board.
Paul Davis, who said he met McDonnell in church and has been friends with the governor for about 12 years, said he believes the appointment offer was unrelated to the financial assistance he provided the governor.
Davis said he declined the appointment because he believed it would take him away from his lucrative medical practice.
But the loan offers a new example of how McDonnell’s personal finances became entangled with his public role as the governor struggled to keep up with payments on property investments he and his family made during the height of the real estate boom.
Davis’s loan also appears to have been handled differently than a subsequent $70,000 payment made to the same real estate company by Jonnie R. Williams Sr., the chief executive of a dietary supplement company.
While Davis said he was sent regular monthly repayment checks by MoBo Real Estate Partners, three people familiar with the Williams transaction have said he was not repaid any money before last month, when McDonnell apologized to Virginians for the gifts scandal and announced he had repaid $124,000 to Williams.
That payment was intended to return with interest Williams’s payment to MoBo, as well as $50,000 given by Williams to McDonnell’s wife Maureen in 2011.
If the repayment wasn’t until last month one has to wonder where all this repayment money is coming from. This entire downhill journey that spiraled out of control for the governor all started over the fired chef. Maybe this is a good example of where the expression “don’t bite the hand that feeds you” originated. When someone removed the rock from on top of Governor McUltra-Sound, did anyone really have a clue what kinds of creepy crawlies were going to come out from under that rock?
The McUltra-Sound era has been truly remarkable, in every way. The man headed for the vice-presidency, by all accounts, has taken a nose-dive and has been caught in a tail spin. Don’t count him out though. There is always a spot for those with questionable ethics at the national level. McDonnell might come back once he gets his second wind.
“don’t bite the hand that feeds you”
Ha ha. Good one.
I don’t think my bank would be as forgiving if I refused to pay my mortgage until all my possessions were lined up on the curb.
This is clearly not a momentary or short lapse in judgement. This is clearly a lifestyle.
Rachel Maddow ripped into both of them again tonight. Ken won’t pay it back by check because he intimated he couldn’t afford it because he has 7 kids.
Maybe he shouldn’t have taken $18k in gifts if he couldn’t pay them back.
It is funny how when a Republican does the same stupid thing Democrats do Democrats finally take notice.

Well, keep up the pressure. Better late than never.
I don’t think any leader from any party ought to be able to accept gifts that reek of influence seeking.
I think that McDonnell’s gift-taking was so extreme that it caught our attention. Finally.
