cone flowerSigns of August–the beautiful coneflower, also known as Echinacea.  Echinacea is found in herbal medicines  and is used for many things including treatment for the common cold.  There is little medical evidence that medicinal values of this plant are anything but an old wives’ tale but a whole lot of people seem to think otherwise.

The coneflower comes in many colors.  the most dramatic are the magentas and hot pinks.  It sure is a favorite of mine.

Did everyone take advantage of the tax free weekend for back to school?  The end of no tax on Amazon is looming…September 1 is the drop dead date on that one.  To anyone who said they didn’t ever vote to increase taxes…well…yes they did if they voted to tax purchases from Amazon.

50 Thoughts to “Open Thread…………………………………………Monday, August 5”

  1. what a great headline:

DONOR JONNIE WILLIAMS, STAR SCIENTIFIC ARE COOPERATING IN MCDONNELL PROBE

It good to know that Governor Ultra sound is getting PROBED also.

What’s sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander.

  2. Here’s a shocker:

The New York Times | BREAKING NEWS ALERT

    newspaper? What’s that?

  4. Friar Tuck

Leakingham advises us that the chickens are coming home to roost. What is going to happen when those chickens land on a certain supervisor’s desk? You know, the one who carries stories out of executive session to his buddies who then publish a slanted version of what was said?

What about the roosting chickens when all the dots are connected?

When will those who have been damaged start filing lawsuits? The damages will not be chicken feed.

What kind of DB refers to themselves in the third person anyway?

  5. If every household in the Commonwealth of Virginia changed just ONE incandescent light bulb to an ENERGY STAR qualified CFL, Virginia would collectively save more than $91 million in energy costs over the lifetime of the bulbs. This savings would provide enough electricity to light the State Capitol for six years and three months, while preventing the release of over 1.8 billion pounds of greenhouse gas emissions into our atmosphere.

  6. Lafayette

Sir Sean, needs to stop with his saying “STOP” while holding up his hand. He’s acting like he’s talking to his kids or students.

    1. Maybe he wants to be a crossing guard for the tri county parkway.

  7. Well, just took my Praxis I tests.

    Reading 184
Math 186…..thought my scores would be reversed…must have missed something in Reading.

    Writing to be scored.

    I hope that’s good.

    @Moon-howler
And if that happened the environmental impact of heave metals in out soil and water table would cost us trillions of $. Sheesh, I thought you loved the environment?

    1. I have no idea what you are talking about.

Its probably a better idea if you stick to the topics that are posted.

  9. Rick Bentley

Drudge Report informs me today thet Bill Clinton “won’t touch Weiner”.

  10. Alan-a-Dale

Just n case I don’t get thru on the hate-blog–

What world do you live in? I have lashed out at no one. This is a mean-spirited blog. You handle personalities and not the facts or policy. You mimic and ridicule people and then probably pew pack on Sundays.

Don’t try to go all Gentle Ben on me.

It is obvious to everyone in the county what is going on. You are trying to get your boy elected to the chair. You are doing it by trying to destroy anyone who you think might be an obstruction.

Everyone knows this including the people in the City. Can you say OBVIOUS.

  11. Reason

The Dep County Exec and the woman from PFM definitely outsmarted the merry men – those self proclaimed financial wizards. Actually, blown completely out of the water is more accurate. Seems to me that the thought processes of the merry men are a bit outdated, maybe their employment peak was in the 80’s. Just leave the complicated stuff to the experts, boys.

Do they make a trans-anal ultrasound? If so they should use one (in an XXL if they come in sizes) to probe the Gov.

    1. Then what would his name be?

  13. Wolverine

Yes, Moe, it’s called a colonoscopy.

    Rick Bentley :
Drudge Report informs me today thet Bill Clinton “won’t touch Weiner”.

That’s hardly news. Everybody knows Bill Clinton might support gay rights but Slick Willie don’t play that way.

  16. @Furby McPhee
He’ll let the interns handle Wiener.

  17. Lafayette

I don’t know why, but I’m still consumed with his(Sir Sean) audacity with the “STOP”. Gives whole new meaning to “talk to the hand” motion.
Those are the very people that helped launch his career on the backs of the PW citizens.

  18. Lafayette

    @Moon-howler
It’s that time of year again, and probably the last I post this just for you. Tomorrow is the opening day of the F-word. It’s still the largest in The Commonwealth. 😉

  19. The next meteor shower is the Perseids on the nights of August 11 and 12. At its best, under dark skies, you might see a score or so “shooting stars” per hour.

  20. Lyssa

Wow. I see the Sheriff has shut down opposing viewpoints. Most of the criteria are focused on people who don’t believe the Sheriff and question, don’t like his writing and people who are mean, nasty and libelous. Gee, I’ve read we usually criticize others based in our own faults. I’ve never ever seen it actually written or so definitively stated.

    Another blog bites the dust.

    @Cargosquid

MH is rubbing off on you!!!

Obama and family heading off for vacation … AGAIN! What percentage of his time has he actually spent in DC, and don’t count the dinners, parties, concerts, and roasts while in DC either. Somewhere there’s a carnival running itself … oh wait.

  23. @Lyssa
Why do you say that? Her mention of stuff like that is one of the original reasons I showed up here years ago.

I was always aggravated when I was out to sea and meteors appeared….. IT WAS ALWAYS OVERCAST!

    1. Its always overcast on land also.

Just waiting for one of the parks to turn into a sky viewing park for special events. So far it hasn’t happened.

  24. Lyssa

Sorry, I missed that and didnt pick it up.

I don’t know much about astronomy. But I enjoy mythology so there’s a start. Hopefully I’ll have time to spend on that and birds. I have a good constellation map at the office. Hopefully that’s burning into my brain.

  25. @Alan-a-Dale

Alan, it looks like you are going to have an even rougher time. It appears that the blog you refer to is a do as I say not as a do blog. In other words, the blog owner can make fun of anyone he wants, ridicule and belittle but don’t dare do it to his pet politicians. Especially don’t say his favorites leak information.

The Peto-phytes will get tired of talking to each other soon. The owner will make up more inflammatory red meat and they can all start chattering to themselves again.

  26. punchak

    @Second Alamo
The whole Congress is off on vacation until September, in which month they will have 9
(NINE) working days until October 1; an important date.
They “work” three days a week.
Why don’t you wail on that group?

  27. @punchak
Actually, the less “work” they do, the safer we are.

  28. @punchak
The President doesn’t…well…isn’t supposed to…. write new laws and regulations. He’s just supposed to enforce current laws. So…. he SHOULD be working…..besides, he has other jobs other than enforcing laws….CINC…. Head of State…etc. Security is an ongoing job. Presidents are supposed to only screw us over with laws written by Congress.

    1. All presidents are allowed to go on vacation. Look at how many vacations you and I have been on.

  29. Lady Spots

    T2T = Mrs. H.

  30. Scout

I can think of presidents who should have taken many more vacations than they did. That job doesn’t strike me as one where one succeeds by chaining oneself to the desk with nose to the grindstone.

  31. Friar Tuck

Methinks that one particular ‘lawmaker’ in the blogosphere isn’t so jazzed up on Virginia politics. Maybe Utah politics is a closer match?

  32. Little John

    @Friar Tuck

I think you meant to say “self appointed enforcer” there, Friar.

  33. Can anyone recommend a good trash company? It seems no one does private residential any more.

  34. Friar Tuck

There is no internet hit squad with the intent to bring down the blog sites.

More fantasy to promote this blog by throwing raw meat.

Think I will just quote myself.

Lady Spots was right about T2T. She spreads delusion. I think all these idiots are part of a cult to uplift their prince.

Something just ain’t normal about all this.

  35. I finally had the water problem in my refrigerator repaired.

A 2 Z Appliance was great. I highly recommend. They were prompt, courteous and pleasant. They came when they said they would and called when they were on the way.

My old appliance repair people retired and a relative took over the business. He was none of the above.

  36. arrggghhhh awful political research call. The stupidest questions ever Research Center. Poor sound quality. Incredibly stupid questions.

Whoever thought those questions up should be buggy whipped.

It is not the headline that Ken Cuccinelli II would have written, of course.

But considering the flak Virginia’s attorney general has received for pressing his defense of the commonwealth’s “crimes against nature” law to the Supreme Court, Cornell law professor Michael Dorf’s recent post must seem almost like vindication:

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/supreme-court-asked-to-revive-virginias-anti-sodomy-law/2013/08/18/c8cad8bc-05b5-11e3-88d6-d5795fab4637_story.html?hpid=z2

Cuccinelli wants to bringvbackbthe state’s sodomy laws. He is more concerned about what happens in our bedrooms than jobs or schools.

Beautiful full moon over my house tonight!!!
    Want to forget about politics.

BTW – Rachel Maddow had a long segment abt Gov. McDonnell (Sponge Bob) tonight.

    1. I caught it at 4 am. She is going to not let him off the hook.

  39. Furby McPhee

This is for all the Democrats here. Who do you want in 2016? Hillary or Biden. And why one over the other?

    1. It’s far too early to have that discussion here.

How about the discussion about when the House is going to start doing something other than trying to defund the ACA or throw up some other obstacles to reproductive rights.

What a lame ass group of legislators.

  40. Furby McPhee

Good grief, you are stuck on bashing republicans. We can’t even talk about something else in an open thread?

It’s not too early to talk about 2016. People here were talking about Ted Cruz in 2016, so is it only too early to talk about Democrats?

Hillary is been all over the news about running in 2016 and there’s already plenty of talk about if Biden will run against her or not. Who will Obama endorse? Or will he do what Bush did and stay out of it?

My question wasn’t even an attack. I’m just wondering who Democrats like better and what the reasons are.

If you like somebody else, go ahead and say it but most Democrats I know think it’s going to be either Hillary or Biden.

    1. Stuck on bashing Republicans? With the fools the Republicans have put out there, what else do you expect? Please note I don’t bash all Republicans. However, for the upcoming election, you are darn right. I am bashing them.

I have no idea who I will support in 2016. I have this election to focus on. If you want to see me support Republicans, wait until the City has elections.

Until then, its going to be a long wait.

  41. Furby McPhee

I wouldn’t expect you as a hardcore Democrat to support republicans. I just thought it was weird that I brought up a very generic topic in an open thread and you immediately switch the subject back to your favorite issue. It’s like we can’t even talk about anything else.
