Democrat Terry McAuliffe has opened a double-digit lead over Republican Ken Cuccinelli II in the race for Virginia governor, in a new poll capturing increasing dissatisfaction among voters with Cuccinelli’s party and his conservative views.
According to a new Washington Post/Abt SRBI poll, McAuliffe tops Cuccinelli 51 percent to 39 percent among likely voters in the Nov. 5 election. McAuliffe led by eight percentage points in a poll taken last month. Libertarian Robert Sarvis, who has capitalized on voter unrest with the two major-party candidates, is at 8 percent, according to the new poll.
The margin between the two major-party candidates is driven by a huge gender gap. Among men, the two candidates are running even, with Cuccinelli at 45 percent and McAuliffe at 44 percent. But among women, Cuccinelli trails by 24 points — 58 percent to 34 percent.
Funny. It seems the past 2 years several folks (yea, mostly men) have come along on this blog and mimicked Elena and me as well as some of the other posters for speaking of the war on women. In fact, I think it is fair to say that some of the men were down right dismissive of us and our warnings.
24 points is pretty significant. So, whether then men want to believe it or not, it’s fairly stupid to make war-like noises at women in this day and age. Start messing with women and their rights and it gets fairly ugly. Groups like Women’s Strike Force and Cooch Watch made noteworthy progress sounding the clarion call over some fairly outrageous behavior on the part of the wannabe governor.
It doesn’t matter the issue or location. I recall the women of Manassas City doing some rather strong come back when they rallied behind their candidate. Regardless of whether you think women are significant as a voting block or not, perception has become reality.
The only thing left to do is make sure to urge all the women you know to get out there and vote.
McAuliffe should not take comfort in these numbers since I am pretty sure that a good number of votes will not be for McAuliffe so much as they will be against Cuccinelli. In the case of the female vote–it is right on.
Cuccinelli is doing well with the little old lady vote.
I know lots of old ladies, myself included, who wouldn’t vote for him.
The RPV Chairman told a small gathering in Tidewater that low turnout may be the key to a November surprise. Apparently, we should hope for less than 35%.
And lousy weather.
@Starryflights
He can’t even count on that. Most of the ones I know are leaning left. Even the moderate Repubs are tired of Cooch intermingling his religious views with his political ones.
It gets worse for Cooch:
Opposition to tea party reaches new high in Virginia, according to new poll

Opposition to the tea party movement has reached a new high in Virginia, a new Washington Post/Abt SRBI poll shows, kicking a key leg of support out from under Ken Cuccinelli II as he tries to win the governor’s race on a strongly conservative platform.
Cuccinelli (R), the state attorney general, now trails businessman Terry McAuliffe (D) by 12 points among likely voters, the survey shows. And Cuccinelli’s decline comes as Virginians are increasingly turned off by the movement that has backed him strongly and with which he shares many views.
Obama is coming next!!! Awesome
