violet

As promised, our very own Downton Abbey discussion page.  I haven’t figured out how to keep it running but I will.  I have put my favorite character at center stage.  Let’s begin with  calling out our favorite characters.  Mine is definitely Violet.  Et tu?

16 Thoughts to “Downton Abbey Season 4 episodes 1, 2, 3”

  1. If you are a hedonist like I am and can’t wait, the UK version is on sale for release 1/28 at Amazon and PBS. The Amazon copy is $10 cheaper ….29 bux!

    I have pre-ordered.

Absolutely Violet…hands down! Did you know that she has never watched any of her scenes or any of the episodes? She said she is too critical of herself if she watches herself and wishes she would have done this or that differently. I just can’t believe it! She is so perfect in the role…I don’t know how she can even think she could do better than she already is! Sybil and Matthew were other favorites, so I’m really bummed they are both gone; just don’t kill Violet!

    1. Isobel is growing on me a little. I think I like Bronson.

Violet is my favorite. I think they do a good job with Lord Granham, making him a decent man but unable to adjust to the changing times. Least favorite character: Livia, although honestly I wasn’t a big fan of any of the daughters until they finally had Mary starting to act like an adult.

I hope people have seen the SNL “Fancy Entourage” parody commercial for if Downton Abbey were running on Spike TV. Very funny.

  4. Emma

I’m actually kind of bored with the season so far. I want to smack Lord Grantham. After nearly losing everything, he’s still a clueless dolt.

    1. He really is a clueless dolt!!! I want to smack him and his upper class cretinism silly.

  5. Twinad

Have to agree on Grantham. I loved Cora’s line…”how could anyone be so stuuuuuuuuuuupid!” LOL. Well, guess what, your dumb husband!

  6. Emma

Grantham reminds me of my favorite line in the gawd-awful movie “Titanic”, where Rose’s mom shouts out “Keep the classes separate!” while the lifeboats are being loaded.

    1. Each season he seems to become more irrelevant. Sadly, he still holds the power.

  7. Lyssa

    Moon-howler :

That sums up the English aristocratic class as years passed after WWI. Well said.

  8. What will become of Anna and Bates? Will Mrs. Hughes tattle?

Will Mary regret turning down what’s his name? Her intentions seem fairly honorable. She wants Matthew in her head still. That’s a hard one. She is a young widow with a child.

Edith should have told her hostess to zip it. I can’t believe the restrictions women were under. I do believe it but I have a difficult time with it.

My heart is breaking for Anna and I teared up when she was confiding in Mrs. Hughes. I’m glad Mary turned Lord G down, if only so that his “man” won’t be coming back to Downton any time soon. Rose was cringe inducing if you ask me…is there a character more vapid? What if Mrs. Hughes and Carson are headed for the sack?

Ahh, I can finally talk about Anna. As I’m sure everyone figured out, that was the controversial scene I was hinting at. It’s going to be a major plot line for the rest of the season and not surprisingly put a lot of strain on her and Bates’ marriage.

You haven’t seen the last of Lord Gillingham or his man servant either.

    1. Gillingham’s man servant needs to be taken out and shot…after being painfully beaten.

Anna is in a lot of pain. I have ordered the UK version which arrives next week, Jan 28. I know I will cheat and watch ahead of schedule. I have no self discipline where DA is concerned.

      Furby, are you watching now…again?

Tell me again how you did this so I can appeal to my cousin or to Roger in UK.

I’ve got a friend “over there” and we each have a Slingbox. It’s like a Tivo except you can watch it from your PC anywhere. So he records shows I want to see from the UK and I watch them on my computer here and I return the favor for him. (He uses it more than me since most big shows air in the US first.) You don’t need two Slingboxes for it to work if you only wanted to do it one way you could get by with one.

I finally decided that I liked how they handled the Anna rape plot. Obviously not that she was raped, but they handle the aftermath well. This will be a lingering event for a long time. Anna is trapped in a situation she can’t escape from. She can’t confide in Bates for fear of what he would do.

Minor spoiler alert: Lord Gillingham returns to Downton, which means his man servant (I think he’s a valet but I have a hard time keeping all the different ranks straight) is back too. Downstairs dining with all the other servants. It’ll make your skin crawl.

Complete sidebar but my bringing up the Slingboxes will let me plug my main reason for getting them…Australian Rules Football. It’s very hard to find on TV in the US but it is the craziest sport I’ve ever seen. Has anybody seen it? Or better yet, know any channel that runs it in the US?
