Colorado legalizes marijuana–world hasn’t ended

So now Colorado has legalized pot for recreational use and the world hasn’t come to an end, what is next? Does this action end the war on drugs? Is the entire state going to pot? Will other states follow suit?

Where does Colorado stand since marijuana possession is against federal law? Will the feds swoop in and go after folks even though Colorado has legalized pot?  It doesn’t sound like the rules are strict.

What benefits do the states get?

Maddow issues smack down to Koch Bros

crooksandliars.com:

Here’s how this whole thing started. In late December, Rachel did a segment on how the Kochs buy their economic studies reinforcing conservative ideas. They do this by donating huge sums to universities and demanding the right to hire faculty who think like they do. That report is here.

Apparently the Kochs didn’t appreciate her reporting, because for some bizarre reason they don’t mind throwing billions around the political universe but shy away from receiving credit for it. So they had their lawyers send Rachel a letter, and boy was it a doozy, as you’ll see in the segment. It included a demand that she read a prepared script by the lawyers retracting her report and apologizing for it.

No guns allowed at McAuliffe’s inauguration

no guns

Hamptonroads.com:

Virginia legislators who lawfully carry concealed handguns at the state Capitol can’t bring them to Virginia’s inauguration Saturday due to stricter U.S. Secret Service security protocols due to the attendance of Bill and Hillary Clinton.

As The Virginian-Pilot reported Saturday, the former president and his wife, a past U.S. senator and secretary of state, plan to be at the Jan. 11 ceremony in Richmond for the swearing in of their longtime friend, Terry McAuliffe, as the state’s 72nd governor.

Because of that, House of Delegates Clerk G. Paul Nardo in an email Friday advised members of the 100-seat House of “special, one-time security arrangements” similar to those when Queen Elizabeth II visited the Capitol in 2007.

Melissa Harris-Perry: The Apology without equivocation

In the grand scheme of things, after seeing the segment that grabbed so much of the conservatives attention, what happened was no where near the end of the world.  However, Harris-Perry, who generally takes the high road, has not disappointed.  She offered a sincere  apology for her role as show host and the subsequent actions.  There were no “buts” or look what the other guys have done.

What more can she do?  Her critics, perhaps stinging from Daddy Duck calling gays an abomination, are still nattering on about what she did.  I doubt if they have watched the actual segment.

I believe Ms. Harris-Perry learned her lesson, after the media firestorm created by that segment.  Harris-Perry is herself from a transracial family.  Her father is black and her mother is a white Mormon.  I believe she was a little too close to the situation to see the Achilles heel in the segment until her guests misbehaved and the critics brought on the storm.

I see no reason for her to be fired.  She handled it as it should have been handled.  She unequivocally apologized.    Now if Faux News will just start apologizing and firing….I know, I know…it will not happen.  Santa will turn in to a black reindeer before Faux will admit to wrong-doing.

Does Congress give a rat’s ass?

Last Saturday, 1.3 million Americans were booted from unemployment benefits. If our vacationing legislators don’t do something quickly, millions more will be kicked off.

The Washington Post’s Brad Plummer had the following to say last Friday:

…there are 4 million people who have been out of work for 27 weeks or longer, translating to the highest long-term unemployment rate since World War II. These people — young, old and from all kinds of demographics — have a 12 percent chance of finding a job in any given month, and, contrary to the theories of Rand Paul Republicans, there’s little evidence that they’re more likely to find work after losing benefits. Cutting off their benefits only causes more suffering for them and more damage to the economy.

We have paid more attention to Duck Dynasty than we have to the plight of fellow Americans who don’t have jobs to support their families.  As Americans, we should DEMAND that unemployment benefits be extended for these people who simply cannot find employment in an America whose recession has not hit evenly.

Bombardment from the skies: Small meteor enters the atmosphere

earthsky.org:

Astronomers say that a very small asteroid entered Earth’s atmosphere on January 2, 2014, after being discovered only one day before.  They’ve labeled the object 2014 AA, because it’s the first asteroid to have been discovered this year.  The Minor Planet Center announced that the asteroid struck Earth’s atmosphere at around 05:00 UTC on January 2.  That’s around midnight, early morning on January 2 on the U.S. East.  The asteroid – which is believed to have been from about 1 to 5 meters across – is thought to have burned up over the Atlantic Ocean, probably off the coast of western Africa.

This is only the second time ever that astronomers were able to spot an asteroid before it struck Earth’s atmosphere.  The first time was in 2008, when the object known as 2008 TC3 burned up over Sudan in Africa.  Like 2014 AA, that object was discovered just a day before it entered Earth’s atmosphere.

Signs? Crop Circles appear in Central California

This design covers about an acre.  The owner of the land says he has no idea how it got there.  What caused the green lights on the horizon?  Could it have been part of a great hoax?

Beats the hell out of me.  Why did they have to ask the biggest dumb ass in Central California what he thought?  Yea, bub, like you know how the work of aliens looks like…

Someone will come forward.  Do people really have this much time on their hands?

Glenn Beck attacks GOP leadership

politico.com:

Conservative radio host Glenn Beck went off on Republican leadership after  the House passed a budget compromise Thursday, calling House Speaker John  Boehner “worthless” and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell a “liar.”

“I think John Boehner is one of the prime examples of worthless, worthless  Republicans,” Beck said Thursday on Mark Levin’s radio show. “All these people  saying, ‘Hey, the Republicans aren’t as bad,’ no. I think they actually might be  worse, because they claim to be something that they’re not.”

Beck told Levin, who called Boehner “utterly feckless,” that  Boehner and those like him “have got to go.”Read More
