28 Thoughts to “Unchosen: Yes, Virginia, there is a Cantor loss”

  1. Lyssa

Maybe EW Jackson will help Brat out. He’s such a happy fellow and speaks for God.

  2. Wolve

Perhaps his personal relationship with his God is why EW is happy. Isn’t that usually how it works?

    1. And good for EW. I don’t think anyone begrudges him his personal relationship with his God. I think what people mind is that he doesn’t have boundaries. He wants to unleash his God on the rest of us. Our God might not be the same as his. That’s the reason his God doesn’t belong in government. For the record, I like my God a lot better than I like his.

  3. Wolve

EW’s God says: “Neither do men light a candle; and put it under a bushel, but on a lampstand; and it give light to all that are in the house.” Matthew 5;15.

What does your God say about that candle?

    1. Mine would say, “”And whenever you pray, don’t be like the hypocrites who love to stand in the synagogues and on the street corners so that they will be seen by people. I tell all of you with certainty, they have their full reward!” Matthew 6:5.

If one puts that candle on a lampstand, he puts it on his own lampstand and uses it as a guide of how to live his life. He does not take it up and shove it down other people’s throats.

  4. Lyssa

    Well, for starters………

They profess to know God, but they deny him by their works. They are detestable, disobedient, unfit for any good work. Titus

If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. John 4:20

If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless. James 1:2

“Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. Matthew 6:1

“Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye. Matthew 7:1

And then two personal favorites from Timothy and James

“Having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.”

“What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith.”

    1. Great response, Lyssa. I missed this earlier. I like #1 statement the best, by Titus.

I think you got to the point much faster than I!!!!!

EW’s God has commanded his followers to serve as a light to the world. God got the ball rolling himself by sending his Apostles out into that world to spread the Good News. EW is a minister, a preacher, an advocate for his God and for the morality demanded by that God. EW is doing his job as permitted to him by our Constitution. As Barnes stated in his Notes on the Bible: “When people light a candle, they do not conceal the light, but place it where it may be of use. So it is with religion. It is given that we may benefit others. It is not to be concealed, but suffered to show itself and to shed light on a surrounding wicked world.”

You seem to believe that your God disapproves of those who openly spread the Good News about Him. Does he thus condemn St. Peter and St. Paul and all the others who have preached that Good News honestly to the people in His name? Does your God ask you to hide in a cloister, so to speak, and not let anyone else know about Him and your faith in Him?

The Holy Scriptures say that EW’s God gave Moses and the people of Israel a list of ten rules to follow if they wanted to stay on his good side. EW believes that He meant what He said and that ALL the rules apply without question, including the one about not killing. Does your God see it the same way or does He let you pick and choose as you wish?

Love the sinner. Hate the sin. Your God feel that way too?

    1. So EW is opposed to war and wants to expand Medicaid to the working poor? How does he feel about SNAP cards?

I guess he believes in literal interpretation of the bible. How do his personal beliefs fit in with the bibles condoning of slavery?

He was pretty clear during his campaign that I was headed to the fiery pits of Hell.

  7. Lyssa

We are at an impasse – sigh. I don’t have my own God like you do. I stick with the one true….shared by many.

  8. Wolve

I beg your pardon, madam; but it was our blogmeister, not myself, who separated this into two Gods, hers and EW’s.

  9. Lyssa

Correct. I still don’t like EW. He’s simply not nice. One thing I really try to think about is that part in the Our Father where it reads “…forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.” In one of my Theology classes we spent almost half a semester on forgiveness and on that one phrase. Quoting bible passages is easy, saying it and living it are two different things. Maybe why that quote from James is a favorite.

  10. Wolve

Well, I hardly think EW could be said to be “shoving” his religion down someone’s throat. Two of the issues which are important to him are pro-life and pro-traditional marriage. In that he shares his beliefs with a wide array of Protestants, Catholics, Orthodox Jews, American Muslims, etc. So which “religion” is he shoving down those throats?

I think we can agree that the government has no power to declare us all Christians or Jews or Muslims or whatever. However, we are all free to use our own thought, education, and influences to attempt to sway government policy on particular issues. We have ideas and preferences which are formed in our own minds from those influences. If our ideas come from the left, we are free to espouse them and seek their adoption by our democratic means. If they come from the right or middle, the same deal. No guarantees of acceptance but every right to pursue them.

So, if EW’s views on the issues come from his religious faith, how can one justify his being told to stay out of the public forum and not have the same rights of advocacy as ourselves? What kind of democratic system would that be? He is seeking a societal reaffirmation of traditional marriage and the right to life, not to convert everybody to his particular religious faith. To say that he must keep his candle under the bushel is to exclude a large segment of our society from participation in perhaps our greatest human right.

    1. Let’s just cut to the chase–he can burn his candle in his church or on a street corner for all I care. I will walk on the other side. He doesn’t have the right to shove his candle into government or make his candle the law of the land or the state.

As for traditional marriage–that sort of tromps on the civil rights of a whole lot of people who aren’t in traditional relationships. Yet EW would not allow those people to marry. That to me is rather unchristian. As for being pro life, he is entitled to be as pro life as he wants to be. What I question is the fact that he would also not extend benefits to those same children. That seems hypocritical to me. So many who oppose abortion in any and all circumstances also oppose aid to families.

What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, Go in peace, be warmed and filled, without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. But someone will say, You have faith and I have works. Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith.

      ~~James 2:14-26

      Talk about picking and chosing….

  11. Wolve

How does EW view slavery in the Bible? Don’t know. How do any of those African-American pastors and bishops arguing against abortion and same-sex marriage view slavery in the Bible? Lots of strong Black churches in ths country. They must have come to grips with it. Moreover, a large part of our Abolitionists were also very devout Christians, including the aforementioned Rev. Albert Barnes, whose 1852 oratory was entitled: “What to the Slaves is the Fourth of July?”

    1. I was thinking more along the lines of literal interpretation of the bible.

Actually there is nothing directly in the bible about abortion (spare me the old testament I knew you interpretation) and I also don’t believe same sex marriage is discussed. There certainly is polygamy in the bible. There is also whore-mongering–lots of it.

  12. Now back to Eric Cantor…

Help me figure this out, folks. why would anyone be cheering that Brat won that primary? He will go to Congress, if he even wins, and will be powerless. Eric Cantor was the #2 Republican in Congress. He was in a huge position of power.

Why would Virginia Republicans want to give all that up?

It sounds to me like Uber Republicans cut off their noses to spite their faces.

I will laugh like hell if Brat gets beaten. Cantor was unstoppable. Brat? Not even sure he will win. You know that the Democrats are going to pour enough money into Trammen’s campaign to float a battleship.

  13. Cargosquid

    @Moon-howler
We got rid of Cantor because he arrogantly assumed that his position was safe, no matter what programs he advocated, his political actions in the GOP in Virginia, and no matter how much he ignored his constituents.

People are tired of “too big to fail” whether it is business or politics.

As for powerless, just his election has derailed programs that would hurt the nation.

    1. You shot yourself in the foot. Now you have no one.

That doesn’t even make sense. Its better to have someone do part of your bidding than none of it.

Surely you don’t think the Democrats would miss the opportunity to pile on this one?

  14. Lyssa

I believe there is an anti incumbent move rising….regardless of party. I find EW offensive because he uses religion to justify his dislike of others. Religionizing behavior is not far from medicalizing bad behavior. Inferring God is on your side as you wage “war” on those different from you and claiming God justifies your actions is a mix we don’t care for from others from outside this country.

  15. Scout

@ Moon: the people of the 7th district didn’t mind giving “all that up” because “all that” was essentially useless to them. The only persons who were benefitting from “all that” were Mr. and Mrs. Cantor.

    1. I am thinking along the lines of Virginia having Republican representation in the third most powerful legislative post. Do Republicans just not work that way???

  16. Wolve

EW uses religion to espouse basic Judeo-Christian morality. Just because you don’t accept his viewpoint doesn’t mean he dislikes you. It is more likely that he prays for you. However, the fact remains that EW has as much constitutional right as any of the rest of us to thrust his “candle” into the public forum and to seek societal acceptance of his viewpoints.

    1. Constitutionally, no one really has the right to make their religion the law of the land.

Some of the stuff I heard out of his mouth wasn’t what many of us consider Judeo-Christian morality.

I am growing weary. He is a religious nut who would be happier in a theocracy. Why on earth did Virginia Republicans waste their vote on him?

  17. Lyssa

EW said all Democrats were anti-god. I would say he doesn’t like democrats. There are several million democrats espousing basic judeo-christian morality. EW does not agree with them because they don’t interpret things the same way. EW is certainly free to say what he thinks and expect to be given the respect all human beings deserve. And so am I, I don’t like him, I think he’s mean and uses religion and race inappropriately. And I daresay there are many millions that would not categorize his comments as basic judeo christian morality. I think he espouses a very odd and narrow viewpoint. He should give the same respect to others that he expects for himself.

  18. George S. Harris

Here we are on the God thing again. What happened to the Constitution provision against any religious test? If I ever thought about vein in politics and someone asked me about my religion, I would remind them of the Constitutional provision: Article VI, paragraph 3, and states that:

“The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the Members of the several State Legislatures, and all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States.”

    Amen!
