Democrat Don Shaw declared his candidacy Tuesday for the 13th House of Delegates District seat, which voters will decide in November 2015.
The district covers portions of the Brentsville, Coles, Gainesville and Occoquan Magisterial Districts in Prince William County as well as all of the city of Manassas Park.
His campaign announcement means that he will not seek the office of Brentsville County Supervisor in the special election that would be held if current Supervisor Wally Covington receives a judicial appointment from the Virginia General Assembly.
So that leaves the race for the Brentsville Magisterial District supervisor to the Republicans unless someone else jumps in. Meanwhile, this can’t be very good news for Del. Bob Marshall. Marshall has been in office for years and is seen as a politician with a not so hidden agenda. While he takes up a few popular causes in his district, he is mainly known around the State Capital as an anti abortion extremist.
During the last delegate cycle, a young math teacher almost picked him off. Will Don Shaw be able to accomplish this mission? As people get more and more repulsed by extremism, candidates who oppose Marshall will have a greater likelihood of unseating him. Don Shaw just might be the guy to do it. He is moderate, business oriented, protective of the environment and believes the women of Virginia can make their own morally appropriate choices in matters of reproduction. I interviewed Don on the telephone shortly after he declared his candidacy for the Brentsville District. I was quite impressed with his business background and his knowledge base.
“After having given the situation a lot of thought,” Shaw said, “I have decided I can make a greater impact in Richmond by working to advance responsible economic legislation and mainstream social policies in the General Assembly. I look forward to serving the constituents of the 13th House District.”
He is currently an Operations Director for a Small Disabled Veteran Owned Business (SDVOB) in Alexandria, Virginia. and he holds a Master of Public Administration degree with postgraduate education in Public Policy. Shaw is an American Legion Life Member, PTSA Vice President, and member of the Ruritans.
Shaw is a retired senior master sergeant, husband and father of three children who attended public schools in Prince William County.
We haven’t heard the last of Don Shaw–Not by a long shot.
Wow! This is great!
I suggest giving Don a call. He is very accessible and has really good ideas.
Do you mean to say that someone who disagrees with your position on abortion is an extremist? How so? In such a difference of views, why are they the extremist and not yourself?
Did I say that? Innocent look. Yes. I probably did mean that. I believe when you start telling other people how they must control their own reproduction, that is extremist.
Remember, you don’t know how I personally feel about abortion. You just know how I feel about policy and the legal aspect of women being in control of their own reproduction and the government staying out of people’s bedrooms.
So yes, if you think you have the right to force other people into parenthood, yes, you are an extremist.
The right to force other people into parenthood? How so? I didn’t command them to have careless sex in a situation where they couldn’t afford or want a child. They brought on the “problem” themselves. All I am recommending is not to solve that “problem” through visiting death into the womb. If that makes me an “extremist” in the eyes of those who have no problem with such a life-ending endeavor, so be it.
Other people’s sex lives really isn’t your business or my business. “Careless sex?” Tsk Tsk. How judgemental. Perhaps their sex wasn’t careless.
I’m antiabortion, but Bob Marshall wont get my vote. Moon you didn’t do the man justice by limiting his “failings” to pro-life. Confederate money, REQUIRING school teachers and staff to carry guns – he’s lost every attempt to gain higher office and he’s spent his entire tenure shoving his version of morals down everyone’s throat and being angry toward everyone else. His contribution to the economic development of the area has been nil and he saved a redundant PWC funded program because his mother in law used it. Preventing abortion is the only thing he’s “for”. He’s against just about everything and everyone that doesn’t share his narrow view. No one like that is pro-life.
I need a little balance to be present in the people I vote for. A little decency toward others as well.
Lyssa, you certainly finished off his resume. I think it was his father-in-law but other than that, I don’t disagree.
Being anti abortion is his life’s work. Everything else is an aside. He helped found American Life League which also opposes all contraception.
Every once in a while the guy comes along and does something common sense that I approve of. I think that is why he keeps getting re-elected because most people simply don’t buy into his extreme anti abortion approach. It’s one thing to be anti abortion. Its another thing to go to the extremes he does, like trying to get the morning after pill banned at JMU.
Don’t forget his statement about special needs children being “G-d’s punishment”, his Virginia currency bill, and Marshall-Newman.
Hope Marshall loses
@Starry flights
Haven’t you run out of “Hope” and “Change” yet.
Okay I’ll bite, How do you feel personally about abortion Ms. Moonhowling?
