Dear Pete,

I would never have guessed that you too would have fallen so quickly into using children to propel you into the “immigration” spotlight.  I realize that you were probably not paying attention back in 2007 when this now, recycled tactic, was originally used and abused.

So allow me to take this public opportunity to educate you.  Back in 2007 John Stirrup, along with Corey, focused much of their attention on the “invasion” of children from South America into our public schools system.  They also wanted reimbursement for the supposed “free” education.  Only here is the problem, it wasn’t free (if you live in the county, in a house or apartment)there is a real estate tax being paid on that dwelling.  In case you weren’t aware, THAT is what pays for our schools.

Also, now pay attention, this is another critical piece of information, there is this pesky Supreme Court ruling, Plyler v Doe.  We HAVE to educate all children, I know, so irritating, but hey, I guess we could live in Afghanistan where no one has to be educated.

HHS is providing funds to house and educate these kids while we determine if sending them back home is a death sentence.  It may be, ultimately, this is the critical difference between you and me, you see, I see them as refugees.

You can’t claim “compassion” for children and yet have your actions be self-serving while possibly inciting another chapter of Help Save Manassas.

You are going down a dangerous moral path,  my friend, and I sincerely hope you rethink this journey you have chosen to embark upon.

33 Thoughts to “Pete Candland Attempts to Retread the Immigration Issue”

  1. Confused

    Hear! Hear!

  2. Starry flights

Oh, and here I thought we had solved the illegal immigration “problem” back in 2007 with that rule of law thing. Greg Letiecq said it was a great success . So why is Pete Candland dredging it up again?

  3. Rick Bentley

What has he done to bring this on? I read about his petition to get reimbursement from the federal Government, rather than wanting we the people to quietly bear the burden of educating illegal immigrants – is that what you’re upset about?

    1. No one is upset, Rick. Elena and I are laughing at Pete trying to retread an old issue. Do you seriously think that Obama is going to cut PWC a check? Bwaahahahahahahahahahahahaha

Funny, Obama gets blamed for everything, including following the law.

  4. Censored bybvbl

Candland and Stewart are two peas in a pod – opportunistic blowhards looking to promote their own personal political careers at the expense of PWC’s reputation. There are better candidates for Chairman both on the BOCS and within the PWC community than these two self-centered pols.

  5. Elena

    Rick,
Pete is sending a “bill” to President Obama. Just really silly AND a stupid political ploy. HHS is already paying YTF to house, cloth, and educate the kids.

He has a petition started that I imagine he actually will use to send campaign fundraising letters to and appeal to the voters on this emotional issue.

  6. I seriously don’t believe Pete is trying to out “illegal” Corey. Pete, don’t go there. You will not win. “Corey’s “illegal” street cred is signed, sealed and documented.

Now, news tip…if you want to win elections, don’t go down that ill-begotten path. The tide has turned and regardless of what Greg says, the Latino vote in this county has some sway. When you challenge Corey, it will be county-wide. Corey has at least made some friends in the Latino community.

Yes, political chicanery. Let’s be transparent. The petition is to get the names, numbers and emails addresses of people who might be considered like-minded.

Paint a big bull’s eye on your butt and say Democrats, vote me out of office because that’s where this is going in a minority-majority county.

Meanwhile, for your entertainment (just a sample)

Back in the day….that is, when my own kids were attending our local schools…our community had a great school system. The high school was a powerhouse in both academics and sports. Since the wave of demographic change over the past decade or so, the local schools have fallen to the very bottom of the heap in terms of county academic ratings. The high school is rarely ever mentioned now when the media lists academic prizes and achievements by individual county students. Teachers and coaches have fled west to the newer schools in the wealthier areas of the county. The football team was once the pride of the community and holder of many trophies, including the first state championship by a county school. I think they have won one game in the last two years. They can barely score a touchdown. Last Friday, they lost 72-0 to a newer west county school. Same goes for all the other sports, except for just a wee modicum of success in soccer.

The high school is now about 55% recent Latino immigrant. Then add in the immigrants and refugees from the Middle East and Asia, and you will have a very different high school than even ten years ago. Our only middle school is likely higher in Latino immigrant percentage than the high school because of recent immigration. And a parent living near me expressed amazement recently that her child was now going to an elementary school in a Tower of Babel.

Well, sir, during the last state review of school performance, only three schools in the county did not cut the mustard in academics. Our high school. Our middle school. And the first of the elementary schools built in the community. These three schools may be facing possible loss of accreditation and, I would guess, state takeover. And guess where the Obama administration decided to put the passle of UAC’s assigned to Loudoun? Right where the teachers and administrators are struggling so hard with some of the most difficult school problems in the county.

Not so nice in some places.

    1. That’s pretty much what happens when older neighborhoods age. I live in a neighborhood that is about 45 years old. The local high school was named as the # 1 high school in the nation by Newsweek or whoever does that award about 15 years ago, maybe a little less and that wasn’t even in its hayday.

As new schools are built for newer neighborhoods, it is normal for the jewel schools to decline. I guess people like us who aren’t working 2-3 jobs should go volunteer our services. I guess I am just not that good of a person.

  8. Wolve

Mrs. W dedicated herself to those schools for over 15 years when we came back to the States for good after years of overseas service. She was there in the “good old days” and during the demographic transition and into the era of academic and athletic decline. Having had a lot of personal contact with immigrant kids of all kinds, we were convinced that we would see the American culture assimilate these kids perhaps even within one generation. We had hopes….. which is why we stayed where we were while many sold out and went west. We did see some progress, to the point where we were swung in the direction of the “Dream” business as a way to solidify the assimilation. However, our enthusiasm is being tempered by the current shortcomings being displayed in those schools and by the refusal of the federal government to secure the border and give us a more orderly and controlled immigration. It appears to us that, while we want to see the original immigrant student situation function better to the benefit of all concerned, we are going to get hit by successive waves of immigrant start-up problems which serve only to complicate the situation and lessen the enthusiasm and acceptance of many. And the worst kick in the teeth is that the politicians seem to be ignoring the rest of us in the interest of buying ethnic votes for their own purposes.

    Interesting post Wolve.

I still think that the most enduring aspect of the encouragement of mass illegal immigration is and will be the endangerment of the American lower class.

We’re seeing it right now. “Poorest Americans falling further behind”. “Why has black America fallen lower statistically during Obama’s Presidency”. DUH!!!!!!!!!!!! Because lower class Americans’ wages and wage potential has been drastically diminished!

  10. Rick Bentley

I say again … DUH! Stock market climbing, lower half of America living in increasing levels of debt. Gee, what happened?

  11. Rick Bentley

The influx of illegal immigration benefits Democrats politically, but in terms of which party’s constituents it benefits, it’s those with money who reap the benefits.

Lower-class Americans who think the Democratic Party is fighting for them … are quite wrong.

We’re moving towards a series of Democratic Presidents, but an America where the social safety net collapses.

  12. Starryflights

We don’t have an illegal immigrants in PWC anymore. The Rule of Law thang solved all that, according to its supporters.

  13. @Wolve

The entire immigration policy needs to be rewritten. Much of it simply doesn’t make sense.

I very much support the Dream Act.

I see more and more immigrant kids graduating. this is a good thing.

  14. Forgot to ask, is Mrs. W still subbing?

  15. @Starryflights

Ha!!! Yuppers. That there Resolution solved the problem.

  16. @Rick Bentley

I see little difference in the Democrats trying to get political mileage and the Republicans trying to rev up their base.

Pete has another thing coming if he thinks he can capture Corey’s “illegal” cred. Hell, Corey is a movie star over it. Pete came real late to this party.

He is just posturing. Sending a bill to the White House. PUH-LEEZ.

He is capturing names and addresses to run for county chair is what that is all about and it is as transparent as glass.

  17. Wolve

Moon-howler :Forgot to ask, is Mrs. W still subbing?

Retired at the end of the last year. She got recruited to watch grandkids instead.

    1. Both are difficult jobs. Give her my best.

  18. Elena

I remain fascinated that people actually blame the least powerful for our economic struggles. Seriously? Corporate welfare isn’t to blame? Walmart type business models aren’t more detrimental than a immigration, legal or otherwise? Really?!

The growing delta between have and have nots has more to do with big money buying legislation that helps the large corporations than any immigration issue EVER could. Ask the farmers that are FORCED to buy Monsanto seed in order to farm and they will have a different view on who is sucking their profits up.

How about students being forced to go into debt because the banks won’t give them competitive interest rates. It isn’t like when I went to college. THIS, this is what is killing America, NOT poor immigrants!

  19. Rick Bentley

Corporate welfare, increasing debt, lack of oversight … they do us no favors.

But let’s not pretend that letting tens of millions of poor in doesn’t suppress lower class wages. You might as well be arguing against gravity.

“The growing delta between have and have nots has more to do with big money buying legislation that helps the large corporations than any immigration issue EVER could.”

I know that you and many other people WANT to believe that. But that doesn’t make it true. The value of labor is a very fundamental driver in the economic engine. It’s being changed, and the economy has been shifting accordingly. haves, and have-nots, and a government borrowing (and buckling, and groaning) to make the system appear to be a solid one.

  20. Rick Bentley

And, we will keep unnaturally propping up our broken system by borrowing … http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/newsbysector/epic/ftse100/11166684/Markets-rebound-after-day-of-turmoil-in-global-markets.html

And we can all keep pretending that either party has a palatable solution that will make the equation work for most people.

  21. Rick Bentley

My final word … as regards the coming election … DON’T VOTE.

Neither party deserves and explicit or implicit support.

If you vote, you’re part of the problem.

If you vote, don’t complain about it when you don’t like what your elected representative does.

  22. Ed Myers

Vote and then come on blogs and say you didn’t vote so you have plausible deniability when pontificating on how awful everyone else voted and how stupid the majority were for voting in the winning candidate. Check.

    1. I always vote, even in primaries.

  23. Elena

    Funny Ed, funny and accurate!

  24. Elena

Since the Sheriff would not post this comment I put on his blog, I will simply share it here.

I told the Sheriff he had given Pete very POOR advice on attempting to revive the now much reviled immigration topic. People in the this county don’t have the stomach for it again.

I told him I was very disappointed in this tactic, it was lacking any semblance of political sophistication.

    1. It’s definitely a tired old retread and very unwise given the demographics in this county.

There’s a lot more at play here than just illegal immigration. One major factor in lower class wage potential is off-shoring of jobs. Another is robotization and mechanization. A lot of the jobs these people used to rely on just don’t exist anymore.

it’s a gross oversimplification to assign all poor people’s job difficulties to immigration, illegal or otherwise.

  26. Rick Bentley

I agree that it’s important to stop encouraging employers to move jobs overseas. We should be using the tax code to discourage this – as we did during the Clinton years. I agree, that’s a part of why things are bad.

Importing cheap labor is having a real effect too.
