Saying Adrian Peterson has “shown no meaningful remorse” for injuring his young son, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell suspended the Minnesota Vikings star without pay for at least the remainder of the 2014 season Tuesday morning for violating the league’s personal conduct policy.

The NFL Players Association quickly announced it will appeal the decision and demand a neutral arbitrator — not Goodell — to hear the appeal, accusing an unnamed league executive of telling Peterson his nine weeks on the exempt list would be considered time served.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said Peterson’s time on paid leave was taken into account but cited the aggravating circumstances laid out in Goodell’s letter to Peterson as explanation for the extended discipline.

How does anyone judge someone’s remorse?  I find that odd.

Is Roger Goodell over-reaching or is he doing the morally responsible thing.

It sounds like Peterson’s career is over.

I find this entire case troubling.  In the first place, I know plenty of people, myself included, who got a switching for naughty behavior.  I don’t think it hurt me at all.  It was part of building my character and I am glad my parents cared enough about me to instill some  of that moral compass in me.  On the other hand, I saw some pictures who were supposedly Peterson’s son after his switching and those injuries shouldn’t have been there. In fact, switchings shouldn’t leave injuries.  That’s just over-doing it.  The kid was only 4.

I think this is a bigger issue.  It’s an issue about parent rights.   It’s an issue about about corporal punishment of children.  It’s an issue about holding athletes to some standard.  It’s an issue about the NFL, NBA, etc having the power to discipline players.

It will be interesting to see what becomes of this case.  In the meanwhile, I do hope Adrian Peterson’s child grows up to be a good man.  I hope that Adrian Peterson continues to discipline his child, but less harshly.

9 Thoughts to “Adrian Peterson suspended for a year”

His career’s not over Moon. He has several good years left, barring injury.

I think the NFL’s handling of this is completely insane. Craven.

I’m not a big fan of using tree branches to whip kids. Or of Peterson. But this is wrong, to keep him out of work for an entire year for a mistake made while trying to help raise his child – who was out of control, and who needed some sort of “whipping” by some people’s standards.

He basically is suspended at this point not for the action, but for thought crime – for not agreeing with Goodell and not being apologetic enough.

Kind of surprised the right wing isn’t concerned about “the war on spankings”. I am a bit concerned, myself. Some children do need physical discipline. And if that goes too far, and a parent makes a mistake, I hardly think a year off work is appropriate.

My fear is that Peterson’s child will NOT grow up to be a good man. He was acting out and is learning the lesson that he can act out, and if anyone tries to punish him, they will get castigated. He will grow up with the baby’s mama here who stirred this all up, as her meal ticket, and I doubt that the kid’s going to grow up into a fine young man.

Again, I’m not a big fan of Peterson, and he’s probably kind of nutty – I always had that impression. But the mother here is more of a villain, to me. This went public because she wanted to get full-time custody so as to get more child support, while embarrassing Peterson. Dwight Howard’s ex is trying something similar right now, filing criminal charges over a spanking.

I support the right to spank.

This is a four year old boy.

    This was not a “spanking.”

Agreed – and it’s to be expected that Child Protective Services became involved. And I’m not second-guessing their findings. And I don’t have a problem with Peterson going through the legal system or anything that I know of that happened there.

But I’m saying the NFL creating a year-long suspension, in part because he’s guilty of thoughtcrime, is wrong.

    1. I am finding myself agreeing with Cargo and agreeing with Rick. Peterson was wrong. He was way too heavy handed. I am not sure he was treated evenhandedly himself by Goodell.

Ray Lewis – murderers got into his limo after a club shooting, Ray drove them away and refused to cooperate in murder investigation – no suspension.

Ben Roethlisburger – 6 games for getting college girls so drunk that no one could see, and arguably raping them.

Every week – guys get 1 or 2 game suspensions for endangering each other’s lives with spearing and other hits.

Ray Rice – originally gets 2 games for dragging fiancée out of an elevator and admitting he hit her.

Donte Stallworth – 16 games for driving drunk and killing people.

Leonard Little – 8 games for driving drunk and killing a woman.

Peterson – 16 games for embarrassing the league, and thought crime.

    @Rick Bentley
Now I see where you’re coming from.

    The NFL is the problem.
