I will not be voting for Marty Nohe this Saturday. I cannot.  I do not live in his district.  Perhaps it is for this reason that this blog provides an endorsement.

Marty is just a decent guy.  He tries to help any resident of Prince William County without regard to party or ideology.    In fact, Marty seems to be driven by decency and doing the right thing more than any ideology.  It was Marty who put a voice of reason on the immigration wars right here in Prince William County.  It was the right thing to do.

Marty has helped my family out several times over issues.  He and his wife didn’t have to spend hours on the phone with me giving me some much needed information and sought after advice, but they did.  They are givers, not takers.

He has helped out the Sudley community when boundary lines split up neighborhoods when the last magisterial districts were drawn.  I was sorry I didn’t end up in his district.  I am even more sorry now.   He provides park activities for neighborhoods and especially pays close attention to those neighborhoods where families  might not have quite as much.  Marty is keenly aware of such things.

Marty is very much a family man.  He walks the walk in that regard.  Just a glance at his Facebook page shows his level of involvement with his own kids.  He also tries to provide opportunities for other folks’ children.

Marty has also turned the other cheek from some of the viciousness and disrespect shown to him by some of the local blogs.  That takes a big man to do that.  Very few of us could withstand some of the  vitriol that has been thrown his way with the dignity and good humor shown by Supervisor Nohe.

Go Marty go!  May the force be with you.

    Standing ovation. Marty Nohe is one of the few Republicans for whom I’d vote. He’s been an asset to this magisterial district.

    For all the trash talk that the SoN does about Marty’s employment, he (SoN) is mysteriously silent about Marty’s challenger’s occupation.

  2. Wombat

    Marty is the only member of the board who consistently votes based on what he believes to be in the best interests of his constituents and the county – even while dealing with some of the nastiest attacks ever. Even on those times when I haven’t agreed with his votes, I’ve trusted his motivations. He is also an “honest broker” between the liberals and conservatives on the board. I don’t even want to think about what the county would look like if he is not re-elected.

  3. ElGuapo

    Marty Nohe isn’t crazy. That makes him VERY DIFFERENT from the folks who run Prince William’s Republican Party. Have you ever actually talked to some of those people? They sound like aliens from another planet.

    The good news is there are fewer of them in Northern Virginia every day. That’s why they rigged this primary to cling to control for four more years. It’s the only way they could get more crazy people elected!

    I’m afraid to see what they try next time!

  4. Leveleer

    These people have no interest in Prince William County’s budget. They are interested in social issues. If you are gay, support gay marriage, or believe in a woman’s right to choose you aren’t going to like the people Candland endorses.

    These people aren’t really fond of Mexicans, Muslims, Jews, Asians, or anyone who isn’t a lily white ultra conservative bible quoting Christian either. If you don’t believe me, just go to any of the voting places and watch who shows up.

    Women are ok as long as they do what they are told.

    If Candland’s people win, Prince William County will have an interesting four years. That’s what happens when you don’t pay attention.

  5. Scout

    Marty is a decent human being who has developed the rare talent of maintaining some optimism and cheerfulness in the face of really low, nasty attacks from people who would rather insult those whose views are different than to engage substantively and politely on difficult policy issues. Prince William County is lucky to have him. I suspect that his family provides him with the ballast and balance he needs to keep things in perspective. Hats off to him. Hats off to his wife and children. Public service at its best.

  6. Wendy

    Marty Nohe GETS it.

  7. Wendy

    Gosh, we sound like the fawning that takes place on SON…except I think there are a few more of us.

    “Have you ever actually talked to some of those people? They sound like aliens from another planet.”

    Try improving your English. And ask them politely to speak slower so you can understand.

    1. I see no reason to question El Guapo’s English. That’s just not appropriate.

  9. Wolve

    @Leveleer

    Lots of mindless hate in that Post #4 of yours, Leveleer. Shame on ya.

  10. Jackson Bills

    @Leveleer
    What a crock of shit, dipshit.

    1. No! Stop the name calling now. I shouldn’t have to baby sit the blog.

  11. Leveleer

    @Wolve

    If you want to see mindless hate, Read the Sheriff of Nottingham. He’s Pete Candland’s biggest fan. Pete has been in the “hate” business for a long time. I haven’t seen you complain over there.

    We all know who writes the Sheriff’s material. Shame on Candland. I’m really tired of the school boy smile he uses to cover a really mean spirit. The same for his handler.

  12. Wombat

    I’m sure there are plenty of other blog posts where we can discuss our opinions about Candland, etc. This post is an endorsement of Marty Nohe. I’d prefer to stay positive – as Marty always does. Keeping Marty on the board is the best hope we have to counter the negativity.

    1. I agree, Wombat. Feel free to discuss other supervisors in the open thread. Let’s keep this one about Marty.

  14. Al

    I actually live in the Coles District. I support Marty Nohe. I plan to vote for him this Saturday.

    http://albornbiz.blogspot.com/2015/04/im-voting-for-marty-nohe-this-saturday.html

  15. Mom

    Just curious Al, if indeed you do vote what will you do in November? The ethical thing given that you would have participated in a closed process limited to Republicans (which you frequently claim you are not) would be to support the winner. Does that mean that Mr. O’Meara can count on your support in November if he wins on Saturday?

    1. “Ethics” and this fire house primary don’t really belong in the same sentence.

      I don’t think anyone else is running, are they? It would seem to me that just doing nothing would be pretty harmless.

      However, expect a Nohe win.

  16. Al

    @Mom
    I have little interest in satisfying your curiosity, Mom. That being said, you may be assured I’ll do the right thing.

  17. Greg

    If you feel strongly about a candidate go vote regardless of your party identification. No one should be preaching about ethics after the local party’s clear inability to run a smooth nomination contest. These are friends, family and neighbors and frankly there is nothing partisan about most issues the board deals with.

    1. Absolutely! Great point, Greg.

  18. Greg

    And by the way, there are currently only two republican candidates in Coles. This could be the ONLY opportunity to exercise your right to vote. Don’t let some silly community organization held together by shoestrings dictate to you when you can voice your constitutional right.

  19. ElGuapo

    Good advice Greg.

  20. Mom

    Nice set of situational ethics you have.

  21. Greg

    Happy to discuss the numerous situational ethical dilemmas the local party has created since last fall once you dismount from your high horse, Mom.

    I play to win, not to make 40 of the most extreme partisans in the county feel good about their process.

    If I want to vote, I will vote. If my favored candidate is not nominated I will weigh my options in November. Pretty simple. Let me know when you figure out which zoning cases are republican or democrat or which party platform supports reducing traffic congestion and reducing class sizes. There are rarely ever any partisan votes on the board. Ill be waiting.

  22. Censored bybvbl

    Suppose a person votes for only the candidates he/she is willing to vote for in November. That doesn’t seem to be a problem. I could vote for Nohe because I’d be willing to support him. I wouldn’t vote for Stewart because I’ll probably vote for the Democrat in November.

  23. ElGuapo

    @Greg

    I’m liking what I’m hearing Greg.

  24. Mom

    @Greg
    No horse to dismount from, just playing by the rules. I don’t have to like them but since I don’t get to individually set them, I choose to abide by them. If you don’t like the candidate for either party and want to vote for the candidate of the other, don’t blame me if that party chooses not to run one. That is on them and to a lesser extent you.

    As to “which zoning cases are republican or democrat or which party platform supports reducing traffic congestion and reducing class sizes”. I think you know the answers. The answer to the first part, at least in PWC, is generally speaking the Republicans are initially opposed to poor development applications, that is until they are bought off by the local developers See: Stewart, Corey. In truth the development industry is pretty smart in that they take every opportunity to buy both sides of the aisle and thus create the circumstances that lead to more congestion and higher class sizes.

    Now when it comes to the fixing the latter problems, the only ones I see trying to address them are Republicans, specifically those being most vilified. If want obstructionists or elected officials who compound the problem to be held responsible then you need to focus on Nohe, Stewart and Jenkins. Caddigan and Principi play the game for personal political gain while May sits on the sidelines playing swing vote. Now perhaps you can understand why the more fiscally conservative among us want not only Jenkins out of office but Nohe as well. Both are equally detrimental to the county regardless their political stripes. BTW, it has nothing to do with Pete and the purported puppet-master, it’s much more grass roots based than that. Many have simply just had their fill of those two and adverse impacts they have on their daily lives.

  25. BSinVA

    I would vote for Nohe only if a Democrat was not running. I would vote for a Democrat only if a Green Party candidate was not running. I would vote for any Candyland acolyte only if Sarah Palin was running against them. or maybe Hitler!

  26. Mom

    Hmm, only thirty comments to prove Godwin’s law, it usually takes twice that.

  27. BSinVA

    I said “maybe”. Therefore, it doesn’t count.

  28. Check out Al Alborn’s blog. He enumerates the reasons why he is voting for Marty Nohe this Saturday. He makes some excellent points.

    http://albornbiz.blogspot.com/2015/04/im-voting-for-marty-nohe-this-saturday.html

  29. @Mom

    Yes. We all saw the thundering herds of people lining up to speak against the taxes. NOT.

    Most of us here don’t agree with your assessment of things. That is not to say I agree with any supervisor all the time.

    Now stand back, from what I have seen, Pete isn’t actually a real conservative. I don’t know what he is. Real conservatives don’t prioritize libraries over educational funding. Real conservatives don’t expect the government to haul your water for you. Real conservatives tell people to bring their own freaking water like they have to do to Ben Lomond soccer fields.

    Gainesville district will soon have 2.5 libraries. /what other magisterial district can boast that?

    Nah…he isn’t a conservative. He is just just trying to get elitist earmarks for his peeps.

    Ben Lomond soccer fields have been here a long time. There are no water fountains down there. People haul their own. But then again, Ben Lomond isn’t in the golden zip code.

  30. I heard a great story about Marty last night from an educator I have known for about 25 years. She had gone to a 50 year celebration at Fred Lynn School. Marty was there and gave a short speech about the people who had touched his life while he was a student there at Fred Lynn. He remembered the names of his teachers and spoke about the impact their presence had had on him.

    My friend came away so impressed that she is now going to go vote this Saturday and she will grab up about 10 of her closest and best friends. Marty just represents Prince William County.

  31. Lyssa

    Wow! When your only tool is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. Republican/Democrat zoning patterns? For real? I do question the expense of the water line to nowhere.

  32. Scout

    At this level, the term “conservative” is just a self-applied marketing gimmick that certain candidates think will help them get cheap votes. It doesn’t really have much policy import. As has been noted by a few of our fellow commenters in this thread, most issues at this level don’t have any significant partisan or ideological content.

  33. Lyssa

    I like that “self applied marketing gimmick”….exactly what it is.

  34. Watching

    So where is a reasonable, middle of the road, compromising person suppose to go if they think they are a Republican? Christine Todd Whitman wrote a book many years ago called “It’s My Party Too”. I am beginning to think that title was a fallacy. Between the litmus test of social conservatives and the tea party “burn it all down and we would be better off” mentality there is no where for a mainstream person to go in the Republican Party. Unfortunately both those spectrums are full of fearful people and fearful people are motivated to vote. Poor Marty.
