RICHMOND — Former Virginia governor L. Douglas Wilder on Wednesday blasted Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s handling of an appointment to the state’s Supreme Court, saying his fellow Democrat had made political missteps that hurt him with Republican legislative leaders and black voters.
Wilder said McAuliffe failed to follow basic Richmond protocol by not running his pick by House and Senate leaders. He also dismissed as “silly” McAuliffe’s claims that the GOP was bucking his nominee because she is a woman. And he said McAuliffe had offended African Americans by choosing a white circuit court judge over a black jurist on the state’s appeals court — a perceived snub that he said would hurt McAuliffe’s friend Hillary Rodham Clinton in the 2016 presidential election.
“McAuliffe being the majordomo for the Clinton campaign in Virginia, this doesn’t help her,” Wilder said. “Some of us are not going to forget it. . . . The real question is, who in the hell was advising the governor?”
Wilder made the remarks during an interview with The Washington Post about an upcoming special session of the General Assembly, during which Republicans plan to take the rare step of removing a sitting Supreme Court justice.
So basically this is all about race. Wilder wants a black judge and the Republicans want to get their brownie points with the potential black voters. Wilder is rarely subtle.
Maybe Republicans and Wilder ought to be worrying about all the women they are going to piss off. Wilder probably won’t care.
Wilder is above it all. Remember those state helicopter rides from Richmond to Charlottesville for the governor’s booty calls in the middle of the night. Charlottesvillians won’t forget that little tax payer addition. Where is the billionairess now? Not the First lady or even a billionairess. She must have squandered her fortunes.
Disclosure: I was a Wilder supporter until I found out what a real POS he was. That happens. I also used to like Lindsay Graham. I guess a girl can change her mind.
McAuliffe should tell Wilder to f**k off. ‘nuf said.
I wish he would.
I am repulsed by the way Rossie Alston handled being a judge locally, especially with the case of Buck Carter.
I am disgusted that Wilder couldn’t control himself and used state funds to transport him and his trooper security detail down to Charlottesville so that he could have frequent sex with someone else’s wife. I believe what people do is their own business until I have to start paying for it.
There should be no booty calls at tax payer expense. Maybe Wilder should be going to prison rather than poor old McDonnell.
Wilder was doing some big time fleecing and with a billionaire’s wife no less. What McDonnell did was small potatoes by comparison.
Wilder is an insignificant person looking to get his name in front of the public.
Yea, he really is now. However, the first (and only) black governor of Virginia in modern times is still one for the history books. I wish he would behave himself.
I don’t like it when politicians I have supported disappoint me.
I am sitting here thinking about poor old Bob McDonnell. I never supported him. I disliked his politics. Yet, I think he has been screwed over. He never broke Virginia laws. Wilder certainly abused the tax payers more than McDonnell ever did.
When Republicans commit an offense, there is little appetite among conservatives to excuse their behavior, particularly for major figures like McDonnell and Petraeus. But when one compares the behavior of McDonnell to Wilder or of Petraeus to Hillary Clinton, it is hard not to view their convictions as political. Two rising Republican stars were removed from contention for national office.
In particular, the revelations about Hillary’s server this week reveal much more serious crimes than what Petraeus did. She should be tried for obstruction of justice and for compromise of intelligence information. There can no longer be doubt that significant crimes were committed, but we shall see if yet another democrat receives a get-out-of-jail pass.
Hillary didn’t hand over top secret documents to someone she was having an affair with. There is no comparison.
McDonnell to Wilder….well…for starters, I don’t think McDonnell should go to jail. If he does, then Wilder should have also.
I know of lots of conservatives who have had some pretty serious breaches and they still get to hob-nob with the rest of the GOP. Marc Stanford pops into my head immediately.
What Hillary has done is much worse. According to news reporting, she had “intelligence information” on her server, which was almost certainly breached and therefore compromised. The emails reportedly discussed capabilities and locations related to an ongoing operation. Then, rather than turn over the server to the authorities so they could assess what information was compromised and take action to mitigate any damage to intelligence sources and methods, she had it wiped. The aggregious part is the coverup — she has placed other people’s lives at risk to save her own ass.
Since all this is based on news reporting, which can be wrong, she should go to trial to separate fact from fiction. If this all turns out to be true, it would constitute a high crime and misdemeanor.
On the other hand, Petraeus simply handed a hard copy of his notebook to his girlfriend who just happened to be a Reservist with a security clearance. He should not have done it, but no compromise took place. The scale of actions is completely different.
Good point about Sanford. He should have been prosecuted.
I prefer to wait and find out the facts. There is simply too much partisan supposition in your comments.
I am not real sure who she supposedly jeopardized.
As many government security systems as get hacked, I am not so sure the data wasn’t safer on her own server….just saying….
@Moon-howler
“I prefer to wait and find out the facts. There is simply too much partisan supposition in your comments.”
That’s what a trial is for.
Do you think the truth really comes out in trials? Bwaahahahahahahaha.
A trial?!!! Is that the best thing the vast right wing conspiracy has to stop Hilary?
Judge Rouch stays, for now. Her appointment will be decided in January. The GOP was foiled by a tie-breaking vote and a defection from one of their own.
It was mostly about power, rather than people, in the General Assembly.
In my case, it was about the people. I still feel that slap on the wrist that Buck Carter was given was dead wrong and I hold Alston responsible.
In the Kelly case, I personally feel that the family had suffered enough. I just wish the mom involved wouldn’t go parading before the Manassas City council on her anti abortion rant. If I had killed one of my kids through negligence, I sure wouldn’t go around telling other people how to live their lives. That just takes elephant balls on a level I don’t understand. It’s twisted.
