It’s time for Republicans to stop equivocating.  They need to call Trump out for his racist remarks and tell him to stop or they will retract their endorsements.  They need to stop hiding behind Hillary.  Right now many of them have put themselves in the untenable position of a self-avowed racist or Hillary.  Those really aren’t their only choices.

Republicans have a choice.  They can pour their efforts into the Senate and House races as well as the various gubernatorial races around the country.  If they do not, they will lose it all.   If they lose it all, they risk losing the party of Lincoln now and forever.

7 Thoughts to “Time for the GOP to tell Trump to straighten up and fly right or else”

It’s too late. There have been a series of disqualifying statements from Trump that can’t readily be undone by retractions, “pivots”, even apologies. The man has shown his true colors and decent Americans can’t cut him any slack. These words came out of Trump’s mouth, and brain, they define who he is, and he can’t un-ring the racist bell. The Judge Curiel thing was no worse than some of the other disqualifying utterances of Trump, but, because it was so mean-spirited and anti-American in a private commercial dispute setting that had nothing to do with the Presidential race, it is very visible at a time when Trump should be attending to the general election dynamics.

It has been very dispiriting for Republicans to watch so-called “leaders” like McConnell and even Ryan (who seems to be an exemplary person and political operative in almost every other way) try to navigate through the sewer. The fact is, they can’t do it, and they have to decide where their values are. As Republicans, the only honorable courses are either to ensure that Trump does not get the nomination, a difficult task considering his indisputable success in the primary process, or to admit we let the country down, sit out this election, accept our own considerable responsibility for those elements of the Clinton 2.0 Administration that we don’t like because of the failure of our nomination process to produce a qualified candidate, and resolve to do better the next time.

    1. Wonderfully written, Scout. I wish I had had you write the blog post. 1+

The die is cast, as they say. Trump’s gonna be Trump, and why would he change- he’s having great success in the electoral process so far. He’s just taking advantage of the seeds sown by the GOP over the past 8 years. He’s taking things to extreme, of course, but fear of “the other,” demonization of those who don’t agree with you, blaming the government for everything, fear of Muslims, attacking the press all didn’t begin with him. He’s tapped into the rich vein of fear, hatred and blame that the GOP’s been mining for years.

Like I said last week, before the idiotic statements he made yesterday about Orlando, it’s too late.

    1. Each time I think he has reached his nadir, he sinks lower.
