Planned Parenthood Shuts Down the United States Government ????????

On many different occassions I have shared the fact, that while attending Marymount University, a Catholic school, I did my internship at Planned Parenthood.  So, for all this talk about abortion abortion abortion, let me share some facts in order to paint a more accurate picture of ALL the critical services that Planned Parenthood provides.

The clinic I worked in did not provide abortion services.  On a sliding fee scale, based on income, women and men, of all ages, came to the clinic.  Although most were women, men also used the services for STD screening and HIV testing.  The women who worked at this clinic were amazing.  No one “pushed abortion” what they “pushed” was EDUCATION.  Their goal was to empower women and men, to be safe, whether it meant HIV, STD, or pregnancy prevention.   The level of service was as  professional as any doctor’s office I have seen.  Their goal was comprehensive care in a non judgemental environment.

Did you know that the Human Papiloma Virus, an STD, if left untreated can cause cervical cancer?   How do you SAVE womens lives, a simple test, one that the clinice I worked in performed ALL the time.

In countries where women cannot get routine Pap tests, cervical cancer is much more common. In fact, cervical cancer is the major cause of cancer deaths in women in any developing countries. These cases are usually diagnosed at a late (invasive) stage, rather than as pre-cancers or early cancers.

Not all American women take advantage of the benefits of Pap test screening. Between 60% and 80% of American women who are diagnosed with invasive cervical cancer have not had a Pap test in the past 5 years. In fact, many of these women have never had a Pap test. In particular, elderly, African-American, and/or low-income women and women who are recent immigrants are less likely to have regular Pap tests.

My experience there was amazing. The people who worked there truly cared about the health of the people that walked through their door. Their goal was to PREVENT unwanted pregancies and STD’s. Their counseling for HIV testing was compassionate and professional. Not one person was given their results over the phone, whether negative or positive, you had to come in and speak with a counselor.  Other services included dispensing birth control pills and offering condoms for free!

Cutting funds to Planned Parenthood is detrimental for the health can well being of women and men in this country. On one hand we all recognize that insurance premiums area often out of reach for many people, Planned Parenthood provides a critical service at an affordable rate, they are able to fill a need. Abortion is not what we are talking about when you simply use a broad brush to deny funding to Planned Parenthood, the care this organiation has provided to women and men for decades has been critical.

I am personally disgusted at the level of ignorance to what Planned Parenthood provides, that I am feeling very hopeless at this point. This is not about the budget, this is about an ideology that is attempting to trump the well being of ALL Americans.

editors note:  This IS NOT a budget issue.  The title X money Planned Parenthood recieves is reimbursement for comprehenisve family planning services.  The government will still have 300,000 million dollars in Title X money, it just cannot be used for Planned Parenthood services.

What Is Title X?

Title X (ten) of the Public Service Act is a federal grant program signed into law by President Richard Nixon in 1970. According to the Guttmacher Institute, a New York-based reproductive health research center, the law had broad bipartisan support and was the result of increasing concerns that low-income women were not able to get access to family planning services and had higher rates of unwanted pregnancies than more affluent women.

Title X grants, which are administered through state health departments or regional agencies, support family planning programs in 4,500 clinics serving 5 million individuals across the country. The funds, which totaled $317 million last year, are used to provide a range of reproductive health and family planning services primarily to low-income individuals. The program is run by the Department of Health and Human Services and provides funding for contraceptive counseling and supplies, STD testing, breast and cervical cancer screenings, vasectomies, hypertension and blood pressure measurement, prenatal care and sex education.

“Highway to Hellwig” Park Saga Continues…………………..

How much parkland are citizens willing to spend their tax dollars on for private interest  groups.  Whatever happened to the idea of passive recreation, a park that ALL citizens can enjoy, as opposed to parks that EXCLUDE citizens and only INCLUDE a small minority of people.  Hellwig is a blatant example of clear duplicity.  The Park Authority, under  the guise of fixing the entrance, is really simply allowing Parkland to be “given” away ( an annual lease fee of ONE dollar) to another private interest group.

Read more of the background information here, the Prince William Conservation Alliance blog.

UPDATE: March 23 2011 — Despite the Board of Supervisors direction that the Park Authority work with the County Transportation Dept. to prioritize improvements to the front entrance to Hellwig Park (see below), the Park Authority Board is scheduled to vote tonight on a resolution approving a lease agreement with the Northern Virginia Soccer Club for their use of the property purchased to improve the front entrance to Hellwig Park.

According to the staff report, the lease agreement covers a five year period at $1/year and would renew by mutual consent. Click here to read the staff report and proposed lease agreement.

Update: Park Authority votes to allow five year lease to Virginia Soccer Association. PA demonstrates the worst of government decision making. The “premise” of the PA for supposedly needing the use of tax payer dollars to buy land to build a second entrance was based on safety? HUH? So now, instead of dealing with this critical “safety issue” by fixing the original entrance, as they were directed to do by the BOCS when denied the money to purchase the land, the PA will instead do nothing. You see, in order to fix the entrance, the newly leased house would have to be demolished.  How pathetic.

There have been many instances in our history where small groups of individuals have perpetrated heinous acts of violence, intended to instill fear in the public and our government.     Some examples of these infamous acts of violence can be found by The Mafia, the Manson Family, Timothy McVeigh,  Abortion Clinic bombings, Assassinations of Doctors,  Columbine High School, Fort Hood Massacre, and most recently, the murderous rampage by Jared Lee Loughner.

Did we have have congressional hearings for all these horrible events?  No!

In this nation, whenever the larger group is held responsible for the acts of a small minority, as Americans, we should feel compelled to reject blanket statements of culpability by mere association.   Because Bernie Madoff was Jewish, as were several presidents of the some the too big to fail banks, at the heart of the financial disaster, should all Jews be held accountable?

I resoundingly reject such suppositions.

Disparity Between Have and Have Nots at Unprecedented Level since 1928

Intuitively, I simply refuse to agree that the poor and struggling middle class is the reason our national and state budgets are in the toilet.     Both Reagan and Bush slashed interest rates which created a building boom and fueled the  economy, but under Bush, what new industry was created, what jobs besides those associated with real estate flourished?  Isn’t that part of the reason this recovery is so difficult to grow our way out of?

Being “Pro-Life” Requires More Than Being “Anti-Abortion”

This past week I have been especially saddened by the rhetoric and zeal regarding the defunding of Planned Parenthood and the passage of Virginia’s new regulations that will essentially close almost all abortion provider clinics.

But that isn’t really what I want to discuss, what I want to discuss is the overwhelming disconnect I see emanating from social conservatives.  Let me say this, as strongly as I can, being pro-life does not end once you “stop” an abortion.  For those that so passionately advocate on behalf of those poor innocent “unborn”, where,  I ask,  where is that same compassion for human beings once they take their first breath,  not only at the beginning of their lives, but along the journey of life, until, in the end, we all must make our final peace and move through that last cycle of life, death.

Where are all these social conservatives when social workers, whose job is to save children and the elderly  from abuse, are underfunded but overworked?  Where are all these social conservatives when critical programs like head start, which feed America’s hungry children, are cut?  Why does compassion seem to end upon birth?  Why are so many of our elderly choosing between medicine or food?

Don’t Tread on Freedom of Speech!

I can tell you, on many occasion I saw this very quiet peaceful protester on 234 throughout the past several years. All he did, was stand in the grass, next to his signs. I don’t recall it saying anything incendiary, but he was definitely against the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. He never shouted, he never waved his arms crazily,he just stood there, like a man on his own private mission to make his voice heard.

I was very surprised to read in the paper, the thuggish behavior of a young person in “uniform”. This “teenager” exited his van, kicked Mr. Hersch’s poster and then got back into his van.

He said that about 12:30 p.m. a green van with an advertisement on the side that read “1-800-Marines” drove up to the intersection and a teenaged passenger got out and kicked down one of his signs.

That’s when the act of civil disobedience or disorderly conduct came into play.

Hersch said he stepped out in front of the van to prevent the driver — who he said was in uniform — from driving away.

Morton Kondracke: “She’s A Joke Within Her Own Party’

From Politico’s On Media blog:

At the Roll Call/CQ election analysis session at the Ronald Reagan Building this morning, Roll Call Executive Editor and Fox News contributor Mort Kondracke blamed Sarah Palin and Jim DeMint for Republican failure to capture the Senate.

“The people who got slapped the hardest in this election — besides Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama — are Jim DeMInt and Sarah Palin,” he said. “Jim DeMint and Sarah Palin are responsible for the fact that the Senate did not go Republican. They’re the ones who are responsible for Christine O’Donnell. They’re the ones who are responsible for Joe Miller in Alaska. They’re the ones who are responsible for Ken Buck in Colorado. They’re the ones who are responsible for Sharron Angle in Nevada.”

Then Kondrake discussed whether Palin could be the 2012 nominee: “She’s a joke even within her own party,” Kondrake said. “The idea that she would be the presidential nominee is unthinkable.”

Respond. How far off base is this non-partisan discussion?

Monstrosity on Silver Lake!

Check out this monstrosity being built on Silver Lake, County property, leased by the Rainbow Riding Club.   Citizens are wondering why there are no building permits for this construction.  So we called, and this is what we were told…………………………….”since this is county property, we will not cite ourselves for improper building practices”.

WHAT?????????????????????  So, what this tells us is that only regular citizens like you and I are held to a county standard.  Really?

What may be most troubling, is WHERE was the legally required public hearing when this contract was created?  Citizens were denied the right to comment on what would happen with THEIR public park land, public park land we all paid for through the Dominion Vally rezoning process.

This construction is on county PUBLIC PARK land that was leased to Rainbow Riding, but who is financing this building?  If it is Rainbow Riding, well, they are a private entity LEASING public land, since when were they allowed exemption from building codes?  Furthermore in their contract with the county, it states the exact opposite.

Pursuant the contract:

p2 b. All such improvements shall be constructed in a good and workmanlike manner, in accordance with all applicable governmental laws, ordinances and regulations, pursuant to approved site plans and building plans and therefore (if applicable ordinances and regulations require the approval of such plans), and after licensor obtains all required permits thereafter.

Where is the Environmental Impact Study?  Where is the Public Facility Review?  Where is the building permit?  WHAT is this facility for?  Is this just for private use by Rainbow Riding or will they charge a fee to rent it out for bigger horse events?  If so, was there a traffic impact analysis completed?

What is very worrisome, when reviewing the contract with Rainbow Riding club, is that our county has basically given our public land away with little to no restrictions of what uses are allowed on County land.

A Tribute to Sargent Shriver

I write this post, not only as a tribute to Sarge Shriver, but also to my godfather, Edgar May, who was a dear friend of of his.

My godfather has an amazing story, one where, as a young child, he was able to leave Switzerland, with his mother and sister, all carrying “golden” visas to the United States.

Why were those “golden” visas?  Because they were Jews escaping Nazi Europe, most Jews were not so lucky to obtain those Visas.

He spent his entire life in public service, as veteran of the Korean War,  a journalist exposing welfare recipient abuse (he earned a pulitzer prize),as head of the OEO, and finally as a Vermont Senator.

Edgar met Sargent Shriver while working on the anti poverty campaign.  He always admired his spirit and dedication to hard work.  As my godfather is a true humanitarian, so was Sarge Shriver.

Here is the article in the Washington Post:

It took only a walk with Sargent Shriver to learn how deeply loved and loving he was. Former Peace Corps volunteers, from the early days of the program that he began in 1961, or ones just back from stints in Third World outposts, would stop Sarge to thank him, embrace him and tell him stories about their life-changing service.

Countless others approached him on airport concourses, city sidewalks and elsewhere: people whose lives were changed because of the anti-poverty programs that Shriver started in the Johnson administration – Legal Services, Head Start, Job Corps, Community Action,VISTA, Upward Bound. Or the parents of children in Special Olympics, the program began by Shriver and his wife, Eunice, that revolutionized the way we treat those with mental disabilities.

“After the shootings, Obama reminds the nation of the golden rule”

John McCain, once again, demonatrates why I liked him.  Having met him, having done his make-up for CNN and MSNBC,  having witnessed his kindness to his staff ( a must in my mind to demonstrate true character), and his kindness to a “common” make up artist,  I feel like he has earned my respect again.

From an op-ed in the Washington Post:

President Obama gave a terrific speech Wednesday night. He movingly mourned and honored the victims of Saturday’s senseless atrocity outside Tucson, comforted and inspired the country, and encouraged those of us who have the privilege of serving America. He encouraged every American who participates in our political debates – whether we are on the left or right or in the media – to aspire to a more generous appreciation of one another and a more modest one of ourselves.

I believe, what Moonhowler and I have been trying to convey, is that although we cannot and should not assess blame, we can look inward and wonder, how our words, and how are actions, can be better, can rise above the anger.

I disagree with many of the president’s policies, but I believe he is a patriot sincerely intent on using his time in office to advance our country’s cause. I reject accusations that his policies and beliefs make him unworthy to lead America or opposed to its founding ideals. And I reject accusations that Americans who vigorously oppose his policies are less intelligent, compassionate or just than those who support them.

He goes onto say being respectful is a goal, not always an achievable one, but one we can, and should strive for.

The suggestion that disagreement cannot our should not be spirited is not realistic, nor does John McCain imply that is our end goal, but I believe when we call for civility, we can still call for vigorous factual debates, without suggesting your “opponent is the devil incarnate”, “a traitor”, or any other pejorative !

Public Parks SHOULD be FOR the Public……RIGHT???

Did everyone watch the Board meeting yesterday? What a joke! What an embarrassment!

In a nutshell, the ENTIRE Board, led by Corey and Wally voted to screw citizens and reward private interest groups, whether they be a small little league football team or big developers, it’s all about the short term payoff $$$$.

Did you know that the co-owner of the Avondale property and Brookfield homes paid an UNDISCLOSED amount to the Grizzly football team to build their ill gotten  private/public parkland. Why should you care? Because WE all end up paying for the infrastructure required to support these homes. The property tax revenue from these new homes will NOT cover the services the County must provide for those homes. Oh, and let’s not forget the realignment of Vint Hill Road,  funded by ALL taxpayers.  WE all must pay for that un-needed improvement and in return, we don’t even get a lousy park, a private small interest football team does!

Where are all the fiscal conservatives?????????????????????????????????

Do you have kids that enjoy parks? How much money was “donated” to the Grizzlies so that they could build their ball field? Are you willing to sit by silently while developers pay off special interest groups in order to “buy” votes for their project. Where are our elected officials, our “servants of the public” ? What is their trade off in allowing these back room deals?

Remember when this Board REFUSED to create a partnership with Bull Run Conservancy, a park that would have served EVERY single resident at NO cost to the taxpayer, and yet THIS project, this back room deal,  tranfering park rights to the Grizzlies, a private football league,  is acceptable?
