Jon Stewart: Conservative Libertarian
Warning: some adult subject matter.
Jon Stewart does a real good Glenn Beck. You have to watch out for that social justice!

Is it just me or does Jon Stewart’s spoof make more sense than Glenn Beck?
I have decided Beck is just dangerous. His audience is too wide and there are just too many people who buy into this crap. Is this a cult?
Life: The Discovery Channel Begins the Sequence to Planet Earth Sunday Night @ 8
Life. This series is an 11 part event that follows the facinating Planet Earth Series. It is best watched in Hi Def. It begins at 8 pm Sunday night.
Following the first installment of Life, we can settle in to the second night of The Pacific.
New Moon is in the mail now. If you purchased it from Amazon, you can download it to watch while you are waiting for the mail to deliver it. My kind of service: instant need gratification. I saw up to watch it at midnight but decided I would never make it through the entire movie. For those of you who are mentally an adult, New Moon is part of the vampire Twilight Series. While written as a book for young people, many adults also enjoy the Twilight Series. (Sort of like how many like Harry Potter.) I like Vampires and I like Forks, Washington, the setting.
Davy Crocket is Dead!
Well, that is true. What I meant to say was that the actor who played Davy Crockett is dead. Fess Parker died at age 85 today. It was his wife’s birthday. They had been married for 50 years. Parker also played Daniel Boone, but Davy Crockett was the idol of every kid in America in the 50s.
Parker appeared on Disney Hour as well as in the film Davy Crockett. He was a tall man, 6 foot 6 inches tall and every young male wanted to be Davy Crocket. Even the girls wore coon skin caps. There were lunch boxes, figurines, buckskin shirts, rifles, and of course there was the song, the Ballad of Davy Crockett:
Born on a mountaintop in Tennessee, greenest state in the land of the free. Raised in the woods so he knew every tree, kilt him a barr when he was only three…(be impressed, that was from memory.)
Nancy Reagan has expressed her condolences over the death of Fess Parker and has stated that he was certainly a good friend to her and Ronnie. RIP Fess Parker. You certain rocked the world of a lot of little baby boomers.
Moonhowlings discussion of “Constantine’s Sword”
I came upon this movie, Constantines Sword, quite by accident, while uploading movies to watch instantly on the T.V. I was profoundly fascinated, not just by the storyteller and his narrative, but the journey of Christianity and its intersection with Judaism, throughout history. For me, the movie was truly moving, in a very personal sense. When it was over, I wondered, how is it possible that the Jewish religion has survived? What dedication must it have taken to continue the traditions under such heavy persecution.
In the end, I came away feeling even more strongly that religion is more often than not, misused and abused. That the most important message, from almost all religions, “love they neighbor as thyself” too often becomes, well, completely forgotten.
One fact that was truly an eye opener was the use of the cross. Now, as a Jewish person, not knowing much about Christianity, I just always assumed it was because Christ was crucified on the cross. Could it be true, that Constantine had this vision when looking up into the blue sky, 300 years after Jesus’s death, of a cross in the sky, a vison he would replicate by crossing his swords? Once he conquered his enemies, believing Christ had been the reason he had vanquished his enemy, the symbol of the cross would now be used to represent all Christians.
I look forward to the discussion!!!
Movie Speak at Moonhowlings
REMINDER: Constantine’s Sword
Discussion begins tomorrow, Monday, March 15.
Elena and I recommend movies to each other off of Netflix. We have both enjoyed the fact that we can just drag them down from cyberspace and watch on the computer when we want to.
We have decided to try out a new idea on the blog, We will announce a movie and dedicate a thread to it a week later. Those who want to watch and discuss, great. Those who don’t, no problem. We will suggest the first film and hopefully contributors will suggest additional films that they have enjoyed. The only rules right now are that it has to be a film that you can watch instantly on Netflix.
This week’s film: Constantine’s Sword
The thread will go up next Monday for discussion.
Let us know by comment what you all think of this new blog twist.

Big Love Post-Mortem
There are a few Big Love aficionados here at Moonhowlings. Today was the end of a very short season. Lots happened, so this thread is for us!
So where is all this headed? Will Margene stay with Ana and Goran? Will Nicki conceive? Will Barb leave Bill and will she hook up with Tommy (played by Adam Beach)? How about Bill’s state senate seat? Will he be recalled because he stupidly announced he was a polygamist? How will the incest at the compound spill over into their lives?
Next Sunday: “The Pacific” Arrives March 14
No, not a tsunami, but the epic saga by Hugh Ambrose has been made into a mini series being shown on HBO. “The Pacific” starts Sunday March 14 and is getting quite a billing.
The book has been published and is being billed as a companion book. Hugh Ambrose will be in McLean the week the miniseries starts.
According to the History Channel:
….executive produced by Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg, and Gary Goetzman-Hugh Ambrose reveals the intertwined odysseys of four U.S. Marines and a U.S. Navy carrier pilot during World War II.
Between America’s retreat from China in late November 1941 and the moment General MacArthur’s airplane touched down on the Japanese mainland in August of 1945, five men connected by happenstance fought the key battles of the war against Japan. From the debacle in Bataan, to the miracle at Midway and the relentless vortex of Guadalcanal, their solemn oaths to their country later led one to the Great Marianas Turkey Shoot and the others to the coral strongholds of Peleliu, the black terraces of Iwo Jima and the killing fields of Okinawa, until at last the survivors enjoyed a triumphant, yet uneasy, return home.
In The Pacific, Hugh Ambrose focuses on the real-life stories of the five men who put their lives on the line for our country. To deepen the story revealed in the miniseries and go beyond it, the book dares to chart a great ocean of enmity known as The Pacific and the brave men who fought. Some considered war a profession, others enlisted as citizen soldiers. Each man served in a different part of the war, but their respective duties required every ounce of their courage and their strength to defeat an enemy who preferred suicide to surrender. The medals for valor which were pinned on three of them came at a shocking price-a price paid in full by all.
Just a glimpse:
Author Hugh Ambrose will be at Tyson’s Barnes and Noble on Wednesday, March 17 for an author event.

We are the World: Visited, Revisited, and Revisited Again on SNL
The Original (For Africa)
The Remake: We are the World for Haiti
And the SNL Version
That original song was wonderful. It crossed all generations. Sadly, the for Haiti version just made me sad. I hate hate hated the ending. I got depressed seeing Michael Jackson, who had done so much with the original. I knew who all the artists in the original were. I only recognized a few in the Haiti version.
But to be fair, I was a lot better 20 some years ago than I am today, so perhaps I should be kinder. I was very disappointed in the much awaited We are the World for Haiti. SNL brings it all home. Don’t ya just love Willie Nelson?
To Kill or Not to Kill?
Tilikum the Killer Whale turned killer again yesterday. He dragged 40-year old trainer Dawn Brancheau into the water and killed her in front of horrified spectators. Yesterday’s incident was not the first time this killer whale has killed. There have been 2 other incidents, one in British Columbia in 1991.
According to the Orlando Sentinal:
Witnesses told the Orlando Sentinel that the animal suddenly grabbed Brancheau by the upper arm, tossed her around in his mouth and pulled her beneath the water as dozens of tourists looked on in horror.
Trainer Dawn Brandheau was an experienced trainer and had worked with this animal many times before.
Sea World says it has no plans to put this animal down. Animal training experts were somewhat shocked by this news. Other animals who kill in captivity are usually euthanized as a matter of public safety. Lions and tigers, elephants, and other animals often kept in captivity are nearly always put down. Dogs are put down. Apparently Tilikum will not be.
Should any animal who has killed humans 3 times be euthanized? What should happen in this case? Frankly, I am shocked. I would think at the very least this animal would be returned to the wild. It is unclear if this animal was born in captivity or not.
Is it Real or is it SNL?
No one has taken a good swipe at Fox News in about a week. Everyone has been too consumed with the weather. So is SNL fair and balanced or has FN been unfairly treated in spoof?
Nothing Says Snow Day Like Jon Stewart
Jon Stewart discusses the past weekend as only Jon can. He discusses Ronald Reagan’s birthday, the Superbowl, the Tea Party Convention and its guest speakers, Sarah Palin and Tom Tancredo.

A really wonderful interview with Jenny Sanford who is actually quite the wit herself: You might have overlooked the interview because it isn’t high comedy.

Tancredo’s speech was over the top. I would hope the audience was offended. I thought that Amerigasm is one of the funniest skits I have seen Jon Stewart do. Have a mavericky watch as Stewart analyzes Palin as a pop culture phenomena.
What Happens When Houses Become a Public Nuisance?
Some houses fair a lot better than others. Serendipity, the house in the movie Nights in Rodanthe, was being reclaimed by the sea. A storm in October 2008 just about finished it off. Dare County served notice that the house was a public nuisance and had to be moved or torn down. The Pennsylvania couple who owned it decided to level it.
Along came a couple from Western North Carolina who fell in love with the house. They purchased it and moved it to a less precarious spot in Rodanthe. Just amazing!
Each locality seems to have its own set of problems, doesn’t it. Neighorhood Services in Dare County probably operates a little different there than it does here. I had no idea how houses were moved. You can see Serendipity move right off its pilings and onto the truck. It looks impossible, but they did it!
You might want to turn the sound down. The music got annoying real fast.
It’s That Time of Year Again: 24 Begins
The TV show 24 starts tonight, Sunday, January 17 at 9 pm on DC Fox 5. The season premiere will be a 2 night 4 hour show. 24 star Kiefer Sutherland will again spend a season going through 24 hours of incredible espionage, terrorism attack, counter terrorism, an arsenal of weapons and probably torture. This season’s 24 will take place in New York City.
Jack Bauer, the hero of the show, has seen more lives than a cat. A grandfather, he is beaten, shot, tortured, kidnapped, drowned, imprisoned, poisoned, drug injected, and just about anything else you can lay on the human soul, and he lives to fight another day. He continues to be fired and brought back in to government service. 24 has had both a black president and a woman president. In that respect, it is quite futuristic.
It is also that time of year when Elena and I have to square off over the reality of 24. I say art imitates life. She feels 24 is pure fiction. I justify some torture using the TV show 24. Elena rejects torture under any circumstances. So, there’s the trailer for the Moon-howler/Elena segment of 24 also. Hopefully, our readers know that while we disagree on some issues, we can agree to disagree. We just wanted to include you all in our annual tiff over the show.
(P.S. We also disagree on PETA. We will do that one in the spring, in time for the Kentucky Derby.)
