We are the World: Visited, Revisited, and Revisited Again on SNL

The Original (For Africa)

The Remake: We are the World for Haiti

And the SNL Version

That original song was wonderful. It crossed all generations. Sadly, the for Haiti version just made me sad.  I hate hate hated the ending.  I got depressed seeing Michael Jackson, who had done so much with the original.  I knew who all the artists in the original were.  I only recognized a few in the Haiti version.

But to be fair, I was a lot better 20 some years ago than I am today, so perhaps I should be kinder.  I was very disappointed in the much awaited We are the World for Haiti.  SNL brings it all home.  Don’t ya just love Willie Nelson?

A Little Levity Please

Elizabeth Hasselbeck seems to think we should all go around in mourning because of the economy or maybe its over the 2 wars.  She wasn’t quite clear during her rant.  She needs to read some history.  Americans got through the Great Depression  listening to FDR’s Fireside Chats.  He tried to cheer people up, keep them informed, give them hope.  Yes, he told a joke or two.  Americans have always maintained their cheerfulness in the face of adversity.

Some background, Sarah Palin, like her or not, mocked President Obama by writing on her hand as her ‘teleprompter.’ Now everyone knows that all presidents since JFK have used the teleprompter.  They have other things to do rather than sit around memorizing speeches.  However, laughing at President Obama over his use of the teleprompter is something his opponents have latched on to, and so be it.  He is a gifted speaker.

This humor seems rather harmless to me.  Palin mocks Obama,  Gibbs mocks Palin.  No one is a sacred cow.  There is nothing much vicious being said.  So why does Elizabeth Hasselbeck get close to hysterical over the issue?  I don’t watch The View.  I don’t enjoy watching and listening to people attempt to scream over each other.   But isn’t Hasselbeck really a little over the top or is she just politically naive?

Did Hasselbeck think Palin was serious?  Didn’t she realize that Palin was spoofing the President?  I thought it was silly but also harmless.  And she got it back at her.  Hopefully she is woman enough to take it.  I imagine she is.

A really wonderful interview with Jenny Sanford who is actually quite the wit herself:   You might have overlooked the interview because it isn’t high comedy.

Tancredo’s speech was over the top.  I would hope the audience was offended.  I thought that Amerigasm is one of the funniest skits I have seen Jon Stewart do.  Have a mavericky watch as Stewart analyzes Palin as a pop culture phenomena.

Obama’s Socialist Christmas Ornament Program

It’s Friday and time for another round of Jon Stewart. It was a toss up between this one and the last Tea Party of the Year. The ornament program won.

My biggest problem with the war Fox is waging is that it destroys confidence. During the Depression and WWII, FDR continually spoke to the American people, reassuring them. He tried to paint a rosy picture, perhaps rosier than it should have been.

Much has been made since those days about the fireside chat mentality of the era. People felt reassured by their president on a weekly basis. However, back then there was no 24 hour news. News was a family time, when the family all gathered around a huge ugly radio and they listened. And the president spoke. It didn’t matter if those listening were Democrats or Republicans. They listened and somehow gained a little more positive outlook on the week ahead.

After a day of Fox News, I just feel despondent, like the world is coming to an end and that it is 2012 on Mayan calendar. The doom and gloom of the country is just oppressively hanging in the air because this dark picture has been painted for hours.

How the $%^&*() are we ever going to gain confidence and assurance in our country if we continue to hear how it is headed for financial ruin and socialism an any other vile condition you don’t want attributed to your country?  It appears  American people have no chance of showing their true mettle because too many have fallen victim to the pessimism of this news channel that seeks to destroy a presidency.

Political Humor Ron Paul Interview

I know people who simply would not vote for Barak Obama because they were afraid of another government run by the same party in all three branches. Well, I guess their fears were unfounded.

I did not realize that abstinence only education was being funded….AGAIN. Research, time and time again, since the 90’s, has clearly demonstrated abstinence only education fails if it is taught as the ONLY form of sex education. And yet, THIS is funded bipartisan in the Finance Committee but the public option fails? Give me a break!

I really thought that real change was possible. If the Democrats are unable to unify on health care, comprehensive immigration reform seems more and more unlikely, leaving the disaster of “status quo” in its place.

Joe Wilson: Fund Raiser Extraordinaire

This has been a really somber day, both weather-wise and in spirit. I need to laugh. As I combed through some of my various favs like Bill Maher and other irreverent beings, I thought nahhh…Bill is a little crude, a little too in your face. So I settled on satirist Rick Horowitz.

Yup, more on Joe Wilson. I understand that fund raising has really taken on new zest and zeal since his outburst of uncontrolled emotion. Wilson helps out both sides, it seems–his own and his opponent’s.

His opponent, Rob Miller, who no one had ever heard of, has amassed something like $800,000 in the past 2 days and Wilson has gotten an extra Half million or so and lots of atta boys. Letterman has made him infamous by citing my favorite:

#2 “It’s been weeks since a politician embarrassed the state of South Carolina.”

Now the House Democrats want to make him a real martyr by passing some resolution condemning him if he doesn’t apologize on the floor of the House. Such theater and high drama from all!

On to Satirist Horowitz:

The Dreaded Obamaphobia

Lots of kids have come down with the dreaded obamaphobia today.  They caught it from their parents.  Where are the truant officers?  The schools probably can not afford them.

Isn’t it Virginia state law that kids go to school?  Compulsary attendance laws specifically list what constitutes an excused absense and what the attendance laws are.  I don’t think Obamaphobia is on the list of excused absenses–at least I didn’t see it.

What I find amusing is that most of the people who are keeping little Johnny and Jane home today are the very people who have been stridently going around screaming RULE OF LAW any time the subject of illegal immigration comes up or if they see someone they think might be illegally in the United States.  Funny how rule of law suddenly becomes a convenience.  Maybe this one time, on the first day of school, rule of law can be wink wink nudge nudged away…for a greater cause.

Video of the President’s speech will be posted as soon as it is available.
