More violence towards law enforcement

Last night, shortly after midnight, 2 Ferguson policemen were shot and seriously wounded.  The shooter is still at bay and a manhunt is underway.

Black leadership is denouncing the violence as is the Obama administration.  No person of decency accepts this horrible behavior towards people who were just standing there in front of their station  at the end of their shift.

So where does it end?  The violence  really needs to stop.  We can’t have crazies picking off cops.  We also can’t have cops and municipalities committing acts like those cited in the Ferguson investigation.  That time has passed.   The protestors have gotten pretty much all they have asked for.  Maybe its time to work towards better relations in another way that exposes our officers to less violence.

What people forget is that cops don’t always see the best of society.  Perhaps its a natural thing to start developing stereotypes when dealing with people who aren’t behaving themselves according to the laws of society.  Cops have to resist the urge to categorize individuals.  They have to rise above it.  If they can’t, then they shouldn’t be cops.

Free Range Parents Investigated for Neglect by CPS

Washingtonpost.com:

It was a one-mile walk home from a Silver Spring park on Georgia Avenue on a Saturday afternoon. But what the parents saw as a moment of independence for their 10-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter, they say authorities viewed much differently. Danielle and Alexander Meitiv say they are being investigated for neglect for the Dec. 20 trek — in a case they say reflects a clash of ideas about how safe the world is and whether parents are free to make their own choices about raising their children.

Let me start off by saying that if things were this stringent when my kids were coming along, I would be in the jail probably for about ten years.  My kids ran all over the place and once they got a little age on them, there were times I didn’t know right where they were.  They also didn’t have cell phones. What is the free-range movement?  According to WaPo:

The Meitivs say they believe in “free-range” parenting, a movement that has been a counterpoint to the hyper-vigilance of “helicopter” parenting, with the idea that children learn self-reliance by being allowed to progressively test limits, make choices and venture out in the world. “The world is actually even safer than when I was a child, and I just want to give them the same freedom and independence that I had — basically an old-fashioned childhood,” she said. “I think it’s absolutely critical for their development — to learn responsibility, to experience the world, to gain confidence and competency.”

Officer Liu’s funeral: A time for grieving, not grievance

officer Lui

Another heart-breaking funeral is underway.  Officer Liu’s father spoke in Cantonese.  It was soul crushing even though I don’t understand Cantonese.  Officer Liu was an only son.  His wife also gave a beautiful tribute to her husband.  It was full of love and friendship and honor.  I felt like I knew this slain man personally as I listened to her words.

Jet Blue donated 1,100 seats to officers from around the country to come to NYC to honor this officer.  The streets were lined with blue as far as the eye could see.  Tens of thousands of officers were out there to show respect to the fallen officer.  The officers in front of the funeral home did not turn their backs on DeBlasio, who also spoke.  However, down the street, a large contingent of officers did turn their backs, even though they had been asked to be respectful by their CEO, NYPD Commissioner Bratton.  Some of those who turned their backs were from out of town.
