Where are the Rules?

If there’s rules then I’d like to see them changed so that the next time a citizen makes a racist comment they get called out. In my opinion, Bob’s talk was uncomfortable and made me cringe a couple times, but in comparison to some of the other things that I’ve heard from people standing at that podium, I’m not quite sure it rises to the standard of a public reprimand. As far as I know, this is the third instance of this happening since October.

  1. The Hispanic lady that tells the board to kiss her a$$ to which John wants her deleted from future broadcasts.
  2. Maureen Caddigan says ‘Can someone stop that woman from coming here?’ in response to Donna Widawski’s.
  3. And now Bob Wills

Again, none of these incidents bother me more than these incidents which stand out in my mind.

  1. The woman who said she doesn’t like it when a Hispanic can own homes and she can’t.[I mean what is that about? Let’s do an exercise, re-read the previous sentence and substitute Black for Hispanic. Obviously offensive. Do people not get it?
  2. Mattes’ statement – It is scary, and she wouldn’t be surprised, if these guys [daylaborers] came across the road & jumped a car and hijacked it.[Okay, worse case scenario, you have a group of men(Hispanic) loitering, looking for work, most likely in a state of mixed immigration status.]
  3. Another lady who said she felt uncomfortable when the daylaborers nodded their heads at her.[Reminds me of Obama’s grandmother admitting she felt uncomfortable with Black men.]

Stewart Asks to Change Resolution Again!

News Channel 4 reported yesterday that Corey wants to ‘strengthen’ the resolution and would like it done immediately, claiming that he already has the 7 votes required to alter the resolution. Doesn’t the County have any other business to address? Stewart & Stirrup just voted to strengthen the resolution and now they need to strengthen it again? This is one of the oddest displays of public governence that I have ever witnessed. This smells of desperation on their part and it will be interesting to see what happens.

Update #2:  Corey made a statement at the beginning of the meeting saying the resolution would not be voted upon today.  So, that’s that.  I don’t think it’s necessary to plan on speaking to the issue this evening.  I will keep you informed.

PWCBOS 05/20/08 Meeting

The Board will have both a 2:oopm & 7:30pm session tomorrow. Tomorrow’s agenda has the regular hodge podge of quick take, rezoning, special use permits, public hearings, budget amendments etc…

However, the rumor mill has it that the dead horse will be beat again. Apparently, Corey and John want to continue the “probable cause” portion of the “Immigration Resolution”, so stay tuned. We should have more information after the 2:00pm session, so check back to see if you should plan to speak at the 7:30pm meeting.

What’s happened today?

  • Filmmakers Annabel Park & Eric Byler debut on Wolf Blitzer and have CNN article.
  • The County has now posted the newly modified resolution.
  • BVBL continues the pursuit on Chief Deane complete with an online smack-down that has now spilled over to Virginia Virtucon.  This tactic previously backfired and reminds me of the saying –  ‘insanity is doing the same thing over and over with the expectation of a different result.’ 
  • Thousands gather in cities around the Country.  Hopefully we’ll have some pictures of the event in D.C.

Check out this precise and elucidating story filed by Dan Genz in The DC Examiner outlining the changes to the Immigration Resolution as they apply to real life. Dan also reports that we are now engaged in a new round of fighting, this time a “spin” war over who gets to declare victory.

Also, Channel 7 aired a story last night that communicates a lot despite its brevity.

Foot Soldiers On the Move

The Board will have both a 2:oopm session today; and comments concerning the funding of the ‘Immigration Resolution’ should be addressed then as there is no evening session. Everyone should be prepared for the ‘foot soldiers’ to once again descend on the McCoart building. Hopefully, the Supervisors won’t retreat and will have the courage to face this head-on. It’s gone on long enough and there’s simply no money to fund this whole thing.

Stewart’s Leadership Style

Here we go again. Honestly, it’s difficult to comprehend this type of management style. But for those that don’t know, it appears Corey’s looking for another spectacle on Tuesday. Here’s the email blast he sent out to everyone and their brother.

This morning in today’s Washington Post, one of my fellow supervisors, Woodbridge Supervisor Frank Principi, proposed repealing the cracking down on illegal immigration. Please email Supervisor Principi and the whole Board at [email protected] and ask them to continue the crackdown. The vote to fund the resolution will be next Tuesday, April 29, at 2:00 p.m. at the McCoart building at 1 County Complex, Woodbridge, VA 22192. I know it may be inconvenient, but please try to attend and ask others to attend as well. Everyone will have 3 minutes to speak.

Guess we should be glad that he’s not spending the $30,000 on the postcards this time.

Chairman Stewart should just listen to the business owners that have been lining up at Citizens Time, look at the housing market, recognize the source of the resolution, view the budget constraints, pay attention to the economist, think for yourself and stop following the know-nothing that will eventually get himself thrown out of the Republican party. Distance yourself from him, distance yourself from FAIR, and distance yourself from this non-sense about filling out pieces of papers to send to a government agency that will not do anything with them.  Chairman Stewart, focus on the jails so that felons don’t continue to slip through the cracks and be released back onto the street. Keep the tax rate low so that another 18 million dollars are cut from the school budget. Get rid of the part of the resolution that surely will attract litigation and put the county into a situation of having to spend money we don’t have to defend it.  Then get back to our county business, by healing the wounds and working together to attract businesses and home buyers to our community.

Budget Recap

Supervisors had a late night budget cutting session that netted approximately 6.7 million savings in the first year but many of the cuts were one year suspension of services that don’t yield much savings in the 5 year plan.  In terms of ‘illegal immigration’ the additional police staffing of 6 officers and 1 support staff civilian that were requested were removed; however Chairman Stewart made it clear that it does not mean that officers will not be perfoming those duties.  Interestingly, Chief Deane pointed out that if we were to be competitive with some surrounding jurisdictions we would be looking at hiring 100-200 officers instead of the 36 that he initially requested.  Also, the cameras for the police cruisers have at least temporarily been removed.  If staff determines the cameras are required to mitigate liabilities resulting from a lawsuit they can be reintroduced.  Still on the table for possible reductions are 85 County employees layoffs which could account for another 5 million.  The end result being a 5% increase for residential properties & a 28.6% increase on the average commercial tax bill.
